In trying to analyze where we are as a program after Year 2 of the Richt Era , especially after the disappointment of 3 straight losses, I think it helps to understand where we were when MR took over in late 2015.

Our record from the 2006 season to 2015( 10 years) was 71-56. An average of 7 wins and 5.5 losses per year. To be generous lets call it an average of 7-5 EVERY year. Of course, not every year was 7-5. We had a 6-7( 2014), 6-6( 2011), and 5-7 ( 2007).

Think about that. TEN years of absolute mediocrity and incompetence. TEN years where HS players outside of South Florida were not hearing about us, seeing us on TV in big games. Ten years of negative recruiting. Ten years of irrelevance.

A Decade of Neglect. A Decade of Darkness.

What other top program has, in recent times, gone thru a decade of such mediocrity? ****, 2-3 seasons of 8-4 and 7-6 get AD's and staffs fired at most top programs.

And in those 10 years CFB changed, as it continues to change. Kids are willing to go to non- traditional programs to get playing time. More programs have come to SFL to recruit. I mean even Louisville has set up camp here. Louisville!! Every program in the country has emulated the Miami way and gone to speed, speed, speed.

So, while we spent 10 long years in the wilderness, other programs were staying strong, getting stronger, and further solidifying their foundation. Can you imagine FSU going thru a 10 year nightmare like we did? UF? Auburn, Bama,Ohio State?

My point is that this program that we all love was neglected for 10 years. Richt has had to resurrect a lot: a fan base that grew numb to mediocrity, a local recruiting base that was open territory for all poachers, a brand that was torn and tattered.

Am I pleased with the Pitt loss? Ummmm....no....my remote wishes we had won that game. The Clemson beat down? Nope, wish we had acquitted ourselves better. Wisconsin? Ughhh, shoulda won that.

But as impatient as I am as a Canes fan, i have to realize the absolute abyss that we fell into and when i do that, I have to think that right now, Miami is a walking miracle. A dormant, neglected program that is now, 2 years later, on the right track, and trending upwards.

Ten years of neglect takes time to fix.

Go Canes.

It was more than 10 years. The minute they hired Larry Coker the decline began. Yeah, we won a title, but honestly, you or I could have coached that team to a title in 2001. Almost any coach in the country could have done it in 2002 as well.

Not true at all. It is very difficult, almost impossible to go undefeated (remember the miracle at Boston College-2001). In fact if Terry Porter does not rob us we go undefeated for two consecutive years. Coker could actually coach, he could not recruit.

The point is:Winning is very hard, going undefeated nearly impossible. Glad to see us trending upwards. The wilderness was bad, but I went to games (Orange Bowl) before we were the U. Now that was bad, we actually lost to FAMU.

It usually takes a couple of years of downturn for a team to go from title contender to non-factor. I'd consider 2003-2005 to be "downturn" years. The team was still relevant but not championship caliber. Much like I consider 2016-17 to be "upturn" years. Miami is no longer irrelevant but they're not quite championship caliber yet either. People hoping for some kind of miracle quick fix aren't being realistic. This is not the finished product.

Sorry, but a better coach not only would have won it all in 2001 and 2002, but wouldn't have let the wheels fall off. Coker was a BAD hire.

Bama went through this as well. After 93, they fell hard. Nick finally arrives and now they are the darlings again. We're way ahead of schedule. Get the QB situation right and we fly like an ibis should.

Look at Coker’s recruiting class that 1 year where he had Willie Williams and Kyle Wright. You listen to the experts Willie was Derrick Thomas in the making and Kyle was Carson Wentz.

I think Coker was a bad coach and Dan Werner was probably the worst OC I had ever seen. I said my peace on Randy Shannon the Guy was clueless as a DC.

Everytime you listen to the players about who should be coach big mistake. Players wanted Gary Stevens over Dennis Erickson but Sam Jankovich was bright enough to make the best hire without emotion.

Paul Dee listened to the players with Coker and result is what happened. Then he listened to them again with Randy and the rest is history.

It's happened to plenty of teams.

Texas.
Notre Dame.
Florida... nah I'm just fckin with ya, they always sucked.
Nebraska.
USC.
PSU.

We also suffer from a very romanticized history of our own success. We didn't really compete until the late 70's and never made it big until the 80's. Then we had a blitz of success: 4 national titles in 8 years and we played for a few more. We were brash and intoxicating. We were good in the early 90's and then down in the late 90's due to sanctions but it was temporary. Then a blaze of glory from '99 - '03 with the greatest team ever assembled... and then not much to speak of. Our fan base is inpatient because we never had to endure anything like this from the time we arrived on the scene with Schnelly. We also have a fan base that believes every Miami team ever blew opponents out and held teams to 100 yards of total offense while they won games 48-0 every Saturday. Sure we had that, but a lot of our biggest games and best seasons were close. Our blitz of success and an overly romanticized history contribute to the lack of reality sometimes. I'm just as guilty of it. It's hard to win in college football and we made a mockery of it for 20 years. Our fan base was raised on it.

I'll make the analysis easy for you-

Still not conference champions
Still not major bowl game champions/playing for titles
Still not closing on the highest rated/most heavily recruited players in our area

Yeah, I don't get it. Some people take every opportunity to focus on Richt not winning a National Title. I feel like they would be happier with another unproven coach. Personally, I welcome a coach who wins us a game like we did when ESPN College GameDay was on campus. Who remembers the last time that happened?

People act like Richt's ceiling at Georgia is the same as it will be in Miami. If Richt is a proven winner (He averages over 9 wins a season) then people will fill the stands. If people fill the stands, it robs rivals of their #1 argument against us. If we get recruits, we will win even more. That wasn't the case at Georgia. They had fans no matter who was coach and what the record!

So save the "I'm not satisfied with 10 wins! National Titles or bust!" comments. All in good time, people. build up recruiting.

If Coker was such a good coach why didn’t he get another gig except with the USTA Road Runners? Even USTA ran him out of town eventually. Coker was ripped repeatedly with Butch here as being a horrible OC. He was a DB coach at Ohio State before Butch hired him LOL.

Of course they became a juggernaut once the studs came in. How many of us would fail with Andre Johnson, Reggie Wayne and Santana Moss as WRs? Also James, Portis and McGahee at RBs?

Coker was a massively bad hire, however Donna was already starting to pull funds out of Football program.
excellent point as we stopped spending $$$$ everyone else was in an arms race facilities
coaches salaries support staff QC,analysts S&C improvements whole 10 years.in effect a double whammy
we have an excellent talent base in Fla., a beautiful campus and city for a player to enjoy
facilities are above average with IPF. need to get creative with S&C program as top schools Bama, UGA(now)
Clemson,OSU heck even Wisconsin are on the program.... can not control LOS on either side of the ball against top teams
sp that relates you to 8-9-10 wins but not an playoffs spots IMO....

At the core of this discussion is donna shalala. She is the one whose tenure perfectly coincided with the decline of UM football. Moreover, given what we've learned about her, how she ran the university, and what exactly she did to stifle the program, any Canes fan should have her on a list of people band from campus.

We were screwed the day Clappy took over. The 2001 team was on autopilot.

It has really been a decade and a half of descending into the abyss...

USC
Oklahoma
Ohio State
Bama

All were down for decades..

Texas now too..

LSU once went 26 years between 10 win seasons and went 45 years between national titles
Michigan went 50 years between national titles and hasn't played for one in 20
Nebraska went 23 years between national titles before ripping off 3 in 4 years. They are now an after thought
Tennessee hasn't won 10 games in 10 years and hasn't won an SEC Title in 20
Auburn went 53 years between national titles and 15 years between 10 win seasons.

Basic point is it's hard to win and it comes in spurts.
