Miami vs UVA 2/19

I don't get angry with loses with this team because they stink. early in the year I would have been shocked if they won 3-4 ACC games. this was before I realized how bad the ACC is. They don't take good shots McGusty has to stop shooting 3s.
Yep, the dude that shot 50% from 3 today should stop shooting. Brilliant logic.

Virgina didn't stink when they beat Duke a week and a half back, and they didn't stink tonight. In fact, if Joseph stinked just a little less tonight, we might be celebrating.
You can tell that a lot of people on this board don't pay attention, and just read records on ESPN. Miami should have won this game, they were in position to do so, but you can't overcome Charlie being less than himself and Joseph having by far his worst game in conference play.

Miami gets VT at home coming down the stretch, Miami wins that game, that's another Tier 1 win, because VT is an analytics darling. Miami wins that, beats BC and Pitt, that's **** near ballgame there, they beat Cuse, it's done. I would feel better with at least one ACCT win, just because any additional wins helps.

Also overlooked is that one reason our top 3 stars weren't stellar in the stats tonight is because they had players in their face and (with a bit of help from the Tobacco refs) the VA defensive effort was quite good in general. You can say one or more of them stunk, but basically they were outdone by a good effort.
(on the other hand, Joseph, stunk, and Sam and others (yeah too many decent shots went awry too) did NOT pick up the slack.)

Some coaches would rather extend the game and force the opposition to hit FTs, compared to basically going all in. If you go all in on a stop, and you don't get it, game is over anyway. If you foul and they hit FTs(which isn't nearly as easy as people think) you still have time to play the foul game and keep hitting shots. It's a matter of philosophy.
Ya just seems fouling them was a bad idea bc UVA shot pretty well from the line tonight. It is what it is. They need to regroup and win the next 3 b4 going up to Cuse for a tough road game

This is a classic Coach L loss. We run a playground offense. When we are getting steals and layups, all is well. That was the first half. When we have to play half court, it is one on one with bad spacing. That was the second half. If we have a player like Larkin we can overcome the poor structure. If we don’t……..

Really frustrating loss. This has been a second half team for much of the season, but tonight was quite the opposite. My thoughts:

- This team is clearly better on the road (wins at duke, at VT, at Wake) than at home. In fact, our last good home performance is when we blew out UNC. Thankfully March Madness is not played at the Watsco Center because for whatever reason, it’s not where we play our best basketball.
- Miami out scored UVA 42-24 in the paint. Normally, that should be enough to win, especially when neither team had an advantage from 3. However, we got absolutely dominated at the FT line. UVA had 25 FT attempts. We had 9. Between that and all their mid range jumpers, that was the difference.
- you can see why we wanted Gardner when he was in the portal. Really good offensive player who is a matchup nightmare
- wtf was Joseph doing tonight? WHY did he take 10 shots?! He’s normally not a high volume shooter. It made absolutely no sense and it wasted multiple offensive possessions during a crucial stretch. Pitiful.
- Another game with Moore in foul trouble. He gets called for some ticky tacks, but this has become an all too common theme
- Wong was disappointing. That’s two bad games against UVA for him
- Miller was by far our best player in the second half. He needs the ball more
- Kam played well but disappeared at times. Some of Joseph’s shots should’ve gone to him
- Walker gave us a nice spark off the bench and in my opinion should’ve stayed in the game longer than he did. He should’ve ate more of Sam’s minutes. It was a mediocre at best game from Sam.

Overall, a disappointing loss at home, especially because we were up 40-30. However, it doesn’t define the season. It just lowers our margin for error coming down the stretch.

The whole point of the PackLine is to force you out of any offensive structure. It clogs the middle and makes it impossible to cut or move anywhere near the basket. The problem tonight wasn't that Miami wasn't getting quality shots, it was that they weren't hitting them. How many open 3s did guys like Wong miss? L's offense tonight wasn't the issue, because you should be able to beat UVA if you score 65+, and Miami did that. That said, you shouldn't be giving up 65+ to UVA, because they've shown throughout the season that they aren't great from the perimeter, and if you can turn them over, you should be fine. Miami turned them over more often than normal, and cashed in.

Miami connects on just a couple of open 3s, they win this game. That said, this isn't nearly the disaster a lot of people are portraying it as. Yes, it would have been a nice one to have. That said, Miami takes care of business and wins 3 of their next 4, they are on the good side of the bubble, with 4 wins making it extremely unlikely Miami gets left out.

Some teams (like VA) have schemes and pesky players that stymie Wong and Kam (even Moore, although he can stymie himself.) The combination of aggressive (and often double) teaming - helped by tobacco refs ... keeps their shot-making down...

...it does open up (for) others as a result. Some days Sam will answer the call (not today). However, we see that Joseph is not ready to be one of the "others". Sometimes Miller and/or Walker, yeah, but that's a prayer and a hope at times too.

Agreed. But that’s a few games recently where Miller has stepped up late when we need it most. He is very reliable around the rim even if not a true “big.” I wouldn’t mind more offensive aggression from him.

Agreed... dont know why Joseph all of a sudden decided that he was Curry and started firing from the 3pt range

Frustrating loss ... we froze for long periods without scoring. Have to be able to manufacture points when shots aren't falling

Not only that but we struggle against bigger teams as well.

Who would have thought that a team that relies on guards, with a dearth of bulky bigs would struggle with size? That said, Miami didn't get killed on the glass as much as you'd think tonight. They kept it respectable. That said, you can't keep letting one guy get shots in his preferred areas. Miami did a poor job of forcing #1 to put the ball on the floor and just let him take midrange jumpers.

Miami will only go as far as Wong, McGusty and Moore will take them. Period. Miami is the kind of team that can be very dangerous in March, because it's guard play that carries the day in the tournament and if you have multiple good ones, you can make a ton of noise.

Except VT usually finds a way to get us back the second time around.

Usually, but who knows this year. Miami already got one on the road, that's usually where Miami struggles against VT. Miami just needs to find a way to get 3 wins coming down the stretch. Period.

This team has proven that nothing is a given at home.

Miami has beaten some **** good teams at home, but also lost to some teams in heartbreakers. Honestly, I think this team is a better road team than home team because they feed on energy, and judging from the sea of empty green seats during today's broadcast, that was tough to come by for stretches. You need your home crowd to carry you sometimes, and this crowd only cares when things are going well.

The student section was packed. The arena wasn’t full, but it’s not like it was a ghost town. Maybe it’s just conincidence. We always struggle with UVA and FSU. We lost to both teams at home AND on the road. Some of the teams we match up well against, we didn’t get to play at home.
