Miami needs to learn from USC

Miami and USC. Two private schools on very different paths right now (both athletically and academically). It all starts with a credible AD.

"The hiring of Foley would be a glaring sign that USC’s athletic department is breaking away from the self-sabotaging pattern of hiring unqualified former players."

USC is going to hit a homerun with their new AD, who is going to hire Meyer and USC will be in the playoffs in 2 years. Meanwhile, Blake James will throw a ticket tape parade (and have a contract extension ready) for Diaz if he manages to wins the ACC coastal in year 3.

Nope.
Again, for 500th, UM's issues has very little to do with the current person running the AD.
It is more to do with the BOT, boosters, alum and, yes, fans.
The lack of commitment from those folks is why we will never have an elite AD.

Okay, so 4 or 5 years at USC and Meyer will bring them one or two titles and NCAA death penalty(NCAA hates them almost as much as us). Then a year off and we can get the sob. ACC will be one of the two Power 5 conferences he hasn't gone to. Hire Foley if we need to but Urban was the only thing he did right at UF. I hate Urban but I'll take him in a second. Saban will be gone by then and Dabo will have replaced him. Urban will be loking at east route to playoffs.

the dog said if he reads "Miami gonna win the Coastal Division" bull**** one more time, he is gonna ****t in the cat's food bowl and make that noisy *** chihuahua next door eat it.
mdp..........so now you are a dog whisperer............LOL......let us know the dog thesaurus' edition that you are using..good stuff.

Athletics haven’t slipped under Frenk. We’ve never invested more in our facilities than under his Presidency.

That being said, I think he’s had zero to do with it.
The undergrad's ranking is now tied with FSU at 57. It was around 40 a couple of years ago.
The MBA program is currently unranked. The rankings go up to 131.
The law school is ranked 67.
The medical school is ranked 78 for primary care and 52 for research.
Engineering is 108.

I understand that the US News rankings are flawed, but perception is reality, and they are still held as the pre-eminent school rankings. All of the above are average to below average.

Yes, the school has new dorms and a student union. Investing in those facilities, however, does not equal academics. I did not like Shalala and still do not. However, from an academics perspective (ignoring the athletics side), she was much better for the school than Frenk.

In all fairness, the academics across the board have slipped almost as much as the athletics under Frenk. He is an unmitigated disaster as President.

hasn't slipped unless your source is us news which isnt a true ranking

Miami and Southern Cal are both private schools in warm-weather climates, who in the past tried to mirror each other's successful runs.

That's about where the comparisons end.

Southern Cal has a much stronger, vocal, money-driven alumni base, influential alumni that will open their wallets and use their influence to get their football program where they need it to be.

Miami has fans still wearing old Nike gear to games and setting up GoFundMe pages for a $495 banner to yell at the athletic director.

Don't even attempt to compare these two programs. Money talks, bullsh1t walks. Until Miami fans / alum are willing to open their wallet to support UM at a higher level, the university is more than fine with adidas and ACC money.
5x as much endowment funds. End of story. Can't compete with those deep pockets. For reference, UF has over 2B in endowment - with a much larger alumni base - and they are outspending us by a wide margin - just imagine SC.

Looks like USC runs a much leaner ship on admin support; perhaps their grad to undergrad ratio is reason, but their undergrad number is still almost twice UMs number.

USC is benefited by being "Hollywood U"- focused (hence the Varsity Blues scandal) in film, mass-media, entertainment law, etc. Miami's focus on such things as marine science, music, etc. don't bring in the money in the same volume. It doesn't hurt USC that successful alums in entertainment like to show themselves giving $$$ for publicity purposes and USC knows where their bread is buttered:

USC is also in a state that is more likely to ban tackle football in the next 25 years, so advantage Miami.

Urban aint dumb, you cant run the shytshow he does in a big market, the media will expose you quickly, I doubt he ever goes to SC or Miami

big market without the media in your pocket*. columbus is an enormous market and osu owns the entire state.

your point still stands though because the la media spent so much time ****ting on his past at florida and again with zach smith, they'd be licking their chops to see what he'd do at sc.

Perception is reality, and the reality is prospective students for both undergrad and grad programs use this to guide decisions on where to apply. Big law firms use this list to determine where to recruit. So do consulting firms, accounting firms, etc.

You may not like the current rankings or their methodology (and I already acknowledged that it is a flawed system), but they are the most cited and referenced rankings out there, and both employers and future graduate programs do care about them as a guide. The ironic part is a couple of the factors that go into it are majorly boosted when athletics are doing well - namely the number of applicants/acceptance rate and percent of alumni that give back.

The University President has an entire University to run

The Athletic Department is one of many parts of the University and to some of your surprise it is NOT the biggest revenue generator.

The University generated $350 million in research grants alone in 2018....income $$ from ALL football related actives are miniscule in comparison

Anyone that feels that the Athletic Department should be the main emphasis of a University is NOT in touch with reality or the University's mission

Most Football "factories" schools generate most of their $$$ for Athletic improvements through donors and individual giving....the simple fact is our fans don't give as much......but we ALWAYS want to tell others how to spend their $$$.

Bags don't come from the University ....bags comes from Boosters

Want more from Miami in football etc.? Give more of your $$ to the Athletic Department.

Hmmmm ....so you're saying that we were a lot better off Shalala

Because EVERYTHING with the exception of athletics was GOING UP under her

Bro, Miami has Jennifer Strawley.

USC might get Urban Meyer but Miami has better equality for women. And you know more people care about that than winning at football.

1. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and I see no problem with fans leveraging media coverage to make a valid point.

2. USC is roughly 40 years older than Miami and they have 3x as many students, so the endowments are relatively equivalent. The operating budgets however, are not, as Miami has a higher per student budget than USC by a large margin.

USC's tuition is $57,256 compared to $38,962 for []__[]. An extra 10M per year for athletics isn't a huge ask, IMO, when []__[] have an annual operating budget of 3.4B but you need a President who prioritizes winning.

Frenk is the one who really needs to get more involved from an administrative standpoint. Send letters and emails voicing displeasure about Athletics to him.

I am saying that at least under Shalala the degree was more valuable, but Frenk at least shows a willingness to invest in athletics. He just has no idea how to go about doing so or evaluate the person in charge of that department. However, I don't think academics and athletics are mutually exclusive and I think it is naive and shortsighted to not view investing in athletics as a way to boost academics and get free advertising. After all, the school's main identifying trademark and catch phrase came out of its football alums continuing to show up on Sunday highlights.

Of course, Shalala also invested in one of the most asinine, illogical purchases this school has ever made with the UHealth hospital purchase.

The short answer is as school presidents, they are on par with Blake James and Sean Eichorst as ADs and Al Golden and Randy Shannon as football coaches.

Fly the freaking Fire Fake James Banner already.. when are we gonna put pressure on that buffoon to step down geesh??
