Miami has to pay the suck tax. Did Miami win 10 games last year? Sure. Means absolutely nothing when you choke in playing for ACC ship game and lose 3/4 games to scrubs at the end of the season.

Playing in the ACC is doing us no favors, neither.

We're not really paying a suck tax.

We're competing with SEC and Big 10 state schools that have more alums, more history, and more (overall) money.

So in that regard, yes, kids are giving Miami a discount.

We are going to have to brutalize our opponents this year. No "lost to GT/Syracuse by less than one TD" margin for error.

All I’ve been wanting for years is to actually look and play like we are levels above the rest of the ACC.

Still doesn’t seem like the roster is there, unfortunately.

27th in yards allowed, which is shocking. Mario was touting that in the lead up to the CFP selection. But I’m sure he didn’t even believe it said anything informative about the D.

UM was 68th in scoring D and high 50s in turnover rate. I don’t know the ACC numbers, but it would be lucky to be a top 100 D in conference play. We didn’t stop anyone ever. We probably would not have been any worse trying onside kicks every time we scored.
30.8 ppg, 14th in the conference
Only NC St., Wake, and Stanford were behind us.

94th in explosive plays allowed

Completely new secondary and probably multiple new linebacker starters , DL is strong, and a new defensive staff.

What bearing does 2024 defensive numbers have on 2025 at all?

Manny jumped dramatically in year 1 as DC under Richt. We can be a top 20-30 defense no problem, but that’ll be up to Hetherman and his ability

They don’t, specifically. But, in general, teams don’t go from as bad as we were to elite in one year. The portal does skew that, though. It’s a lot easier to flip a roster now. But generally, when you’re as bad as we were on defense, it takes more than a year to completely flip that.

I absolutely expect the defense to be way better. But going from 90th in conference scoring to 10th would be incredibly rare.

I will say our DC did some great things at Minnesota. They were 63rd in overall scoring defense in 2023, so basically dead average. And it went to 9th last year.

In conference scoring, Minnesota went from 82nd to 24th. That’s fantastic, and about as good as you can possibly expect.

Miami was 92nd in conference scoring defense last year. Getting into the Top 30 would be amazing.

problem was passing defense. Pass defense was 75th in conf play. Minnesota didn’t add the talent we did. We added the #1 portal cb, #2 safety, #10 cb, #11cb. And if we get haulcy that would be the #5 safety. That’s to pair with oj who was a fr all american. I absolutely expect a big turn around

Yeah if you just look at overall stats we have some that don't look bad overall.

18th nationally in sacks
37th nationally in TFL
19th in rush defense
44th in 3rd down conversion defense

The explosive plays and back end communication were atrocious though.

I think we can make a big jump

Also lead the country in “absolutely backbreaking touchdowns given up when it was obvious to everyone in the stadium what was going to happen” and “most times letting the best player on the other team hurt us in a big spot” for the millionth straight season.

Get Haulcy, and we should have a strong enough back 5 to make a dramatic improvement in explosive plays. I have nightmares about Kiko having to chase his guy 40 yards downfield or Harris and Meesh getting smoked... I still don't get the plan for Brown and Lucas, but we'll have enough pieces to cover if anyone goes down.

As for the run defense and 3rd down stats, I feel like those look deceptively good because opponents were mostly passing on us. When Ga Tech wanted to run on us, they did. Notre Dame, Clemson in the ACCCG and pretty much all the playoff teams will have much stronger run games than ACC opponents. We're still soft in the middle.
