I am not an insider (real or pretend). I’m just saying it appears to me UM has a deliberate strategy of holding its portal moves under wraps until the window is closed to keep guys we want to retain from leaving. Now that the window is closed I think things will start moving. Whether that is correct or Mario is just whiffing should become apparent in the coming days.
I mean Xavier Lucas proved you can unenroll whenever you want and re enroll wherever you want(before classes start obviously)… you just can’t use the portal convenience service to have your name in the system.

It does appear that was the strategy. And it is an idiotic strategy that is likely going to burn us badly. This portal window has been an unmitigated disaster thus far, hope we are able to salvage it, but it is looking bleak.

I questioned your ability to understand how this thing works, with your statement. How in the world is it a bad strategy to make sure you have retained all the players you want on your team currently and after the portal closes, start closing deals because you know exactly who’s already on your team and can now allocate all your money to getting the players you need to complete your roster. I’m really lost on how you think that’s a bad idea.

How’s it working out for us? You like our portal class thus far?

I think it’s a sound strategy largely because I think retention is the most important objective of the portal season. IMO the CFP last year proved that veteran players with significant experience in a system is a winning model.

The portal is obviously necessary to fill gaps. The risk of delaying until the window closes is that you whiff and have no time to induce someone else to enter. But with most other schools appearing to employ this same strategy, I’m not sure trying to force guys to commit while the window is still open would be a viable approach.

It’s a sound strategy when you have a clear CFP roster with limited holes, if any. That’s not what we have. We have serious holes on both sides of the ball, both from a top level talent and depth perspective. You have to be aggressive in a situation like ours, or you run the risk of being left with your johnson in your hand.

Are you mentally handicapped or something? The portal just ended, and if you read my previous post, the point was to retain all our players and then go hard after the portal closes. How about give it a minute to see what we bring in before just assuming that the class we have now, is all we’re getting which is false..

Have a nice weekend and God bless.

No lawyer, but I don't think that's settled. Lucas filed in the right timeframe, it was the school (Wisconsin) that didn't process the paperwork. I expect the NCAA has some jurisdiction over setting process rules still (though grad transfers are a separate topic).

Based on what I just heard, we may have finally done that recently. Let’s see what happens.

Hard to know what's going on. Could this have been their strategy all along? ... The outcome is all that matters at this point.

That’s a fair point. I think our roster is a little better than people assume, but it does have holes. I think the only places we need starter caliber players is slot, LB, S, and K. The rest is backfill for depth. But if everyone else is waiting until the window closes then it’s going to be a challenge to get kids to pop before then.
