Miami athletics has returned to Nike as the program’s apparel sponsor, agreeing to a lucrative 10-year contract worth more than $200 million.

Nike was the apparel sponsor of the Hurricanes from 1987-2015, before the University made an unprecedented decision to sign with Adidas.

Now, Miami is back wearing the iconic swoosh.

Miami found themselves in a strong negotiating position following its national championship appearance, also coming off the footsteps of other premier programs signing apparel deals.

Adidas put pen to paper with Penn State on July 1, in a 10-year, $300 million dollar deal, and agreed to a 10-year, $100 million deal with the University of Tennessee the next day.

With the bar set high, UM went into negotiations with the upper hand and found that Adidas was unwilling to match Nike’s offer according to reports.

The deal marks a role reversal from when Miami was last in apparel negotiations 12 years ago. Nike was unwilling to match Adidas’ offer in 2015, leading to the longstanding Adidas partnership the University had until now.

The offer reportedly puts Miami as the second-highest collegiate investment from Nike, just behind Oregon, where the apparel giant was founded.

UM was in the midst of a 12-year deal partnership with Adidas, set to expire in 2027. The agreement was the longest-standing collegiate partnership in Adidas history — also the first all-sport apparel partnership the company had with a top program.

Adidas had spent the last decade investing in South Florida sports, from high school all the way to Universities.

South Florida talents such as Malachi Toney, Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith and Miami recruits A’mir Sears and Nick Lennear all signed with the three stripes within the last year.

In 2025, Adidas signed a five-year, $13.5 million deal to outfit all 41 of Miami-Dade County High Schools’ athletics uniforms, cementing itself as the leading athletic apparel company in the greater Miami area.

But while UM and Adidas have been great partners for more than a decade, UM and Nike have historic ties.

Miami’s original partnership with Nike marked the first all-sports apparel contract in collegiate history, and continued for four of UM’s national titles in football (1987, 1989, 1999, 2001) and two in baseball (1999, 2001).

The Hurricanes join South Carolina as Power Four programs to sign with Nike in the past year, with the decision set to take effect when Adidas’ deal expires next July ahead of the 2027 athletic season.

 

I don't know what was worse - that or are unis made from literal trash for the LSU game.

Some of our best football at the time was played completely submerged.

Quality? The company who can't even get leg pinstripes to not wrap around the leg in 2026? Oh and don't mind Bain down there with his shoulder pad coming out of his ill-fitting jersey for the 1045th time

 

It’s not impossible to be good bball school with adidas. It has great coaching and good funding that has propelled us. Shoe game is a bigger deal in BBall than sponsorships in football. So it’s harder to attract Nike athletes especially the one and done kids who just ride whoever is the baddest Nike school.

This unlocks a new door, that’s all I’m saying.

Kansas and Louisville have done well for themselves. NC State has been solid(Provided they make competent hires), UCLA made multiple Final Fours with Adidas. Michigan had a great run in Adidas, especially when they had Beilein. It’s coaching plus institutional support that wins recruits. Some kids are Nike kids only, but you also have some the opposite way. I’m willing to bet that is a wash at the end of the day.

Again, people believe correlation equals causation. Nike holds a huge part of the college market, including most of the blue bloods. When your stable is 5x the size of your closest competitor, it stands to reason that you will have a better chance of having more teams be good. That said, Adidas gave Miami the support needed for us to compete at high level in hoops, especially when L was riding high and when Coach Lucas took over.

Nike's stock is down 80% because it's a clown show of a company. They WILL **** up the unis. You wanna know how I know? Because I have a memory longer that that of a knat. Did you enjoy having unis identical to Utah State's? How about App State?

Or we can go with the same template as bama, Texas, OSU, or USCw… back off the edge of the cliff and let’s not act like adidas just barley figured out a “good” jersey after 12 years

Other schools were later given this design and Miami was provided another. Nike will likely deliver us the same unis we have now, but they will fit better, the numbers will actually fit and look correct, and the fans will receive better apparel.

It’s a new era. While we have some badass ones in the past, if you are going to pivot from the traditional, come up with something new and original. I’m sure whatever the decide it’ll please everyone.

You are both correct. @TheOriginalCane was adamant a Nike deal was going to happen. Then he swung hard the other way. My best guess is that general knowledge that the inner circle at UM prefers Nike determined the first prediction. Then the Adidas offer (with Rad's thumbs-up) determined the second. Of course, @Bender predicted this whole saga months ago: Adidas lowballs and Nike swoops in last-second with a big-boy offer.

 

All I care about is the cash, I'm happy with our unis now, but I get where a lot of folks are coming from.

To add on to that point, the distribution of fan gear is going to be a huge upgrade. Back when we were with Nike, I could easily find Miami apparel in athletic stores across Louisiana. Under Adidas, that presence basically vanished. The retail availability alone makes the switch back to Nike a massive win.

Well Miami went 3-0 in those 2015 uniforms before they changed the font. Miami played like literal trash against LSU to open 2018.

It’s not the biggest thing, that obv coaching and NIL. I’m just saying a fair amount of top HS basketball players sign with Nike and were off limits to us as an Adidas school. Now we can potentially peel some of them off if we can keep Lucas. From what I can tell adidas is way behind Nike in signing HS talent.
