To get beat out for an elite OL in your backyard to the team you just beat in the Playoffs. I don’t care how you take it, but it’s a TERRIBLE look when recruiting is your biggest asset as a Coach

Couple things

-Backyard doesn't mean much anywhere in the nation…With seemingly less in South Florida, for a long long time.

-"Great recruiter" doesn't mean as much as much nowadays, at least at HS level. It's almost all NIL related. This is why many questioned if the hiring of Mario even had any value in today's landscape, but he's more than proven it has.

- As we said when we had the May and June DL Losses last year…It's still SEC SEC for these kids. We are up against it recruiting against the SEC. UM games are finally meaning a lot right now, but with Clem/FSU going backwards…Who the **** is tuning in for a big Duke/SMU (Two of the other top teams in the conference) sat night showdown? At least relatively speaking to an LSU/TAMU sat night showdown?

Losses happen, it's really weird and shocking, but the man has built one **** of a roster and doesn't appear to be slowing down. I think we'll be fine.

Not making excuses, but the kid is also a late bloomer to the game too. Hasn't been playing that long and I'm willing to bet his parents are also just really getting into the dynamics of College Football. He also strikes me as one of those conference slurping dudes penalizing us for being in the ACC.

I remember he picked Ohio State to beat us in the playoffs. They asked him why and he said they play in a better conference.

Taking the L and moving on. Mario gotta do better with the support staff. That's how these battles are won.

We made it to the national championship game with a 5* OT, a low 3* OG, a journeyman center, two guys splitting reps at the other OG position, and a Juco OT who most of you didn’t think was any good (yet got drafted higher than all but a couple of our OL over the last 20 years). We’ll be fine.

I'm from California and this is why I say those kids have a sense of loyalty or pride. Lincoln has not done **** at USC yet, but he was able to stack his class last year. Lincoln hasn't done sh** with a TE and they got a 5 star, but Jeremiah Smith has to see it first before he commits lol

Thank God Mario isn't a c*** and put all his eggs in one basket. Pivot to the 5 star in NJ and the 6'8 kid in ATL

The numbers we heard for Cantwell last year was 5M for 3 years,the numbers we've seen for this kid is 8 or 9M for 3 years.Almost double,so when Dmoney says miami was willing to pay top money does he mean they were willing to match Tam or they were willing to pay him at Cantwell's level,there is a big difference there.

It's not a money issue. We were ready to pay Matthews top of the market.

It wasn't effort. We recruited him forever as the top priority.

I don't think Cristobal and Mirabal forgot how to recruit offensive tackles, especially after watching Cantwell toss people all spring.

I also don't think it's about playing time. We play freshmen, and even if Matthews played RT (which he does in high school) he could still go Top 10 like Mauigoa and Fano.

So all that leads me to this conclusion: I think the kid just wants to go to Texas A&M. I don't understand it, but I'm not him. These guys are all different. Texas A&M did a better job recruiting him and looks like they'll win this battle. It's a brutal loss for the Canes.

All we can do is take the L and move forward. Consider it the recruiting version of the SMU game. Focus on Olu Olubobola and get it done. Elite offensive tackles are rare, and there is a big drop off to the next group (as we see in the first round of the NFL Draft). This needs to be a position where we continue to spend money on high school talent. Maybe we can flip Matthews back, but that's becoming less common in this era.

I still think we land a Top 5 class. But I also thought we'd get Matthews. So let's see what happens. We've got seven months. Go Canes.

There’s no accounting for these kids. Stupid is as Stupid does. Haven’t we all been there. Young, headstrong got a bug up your A**. Wanting to exert what ever control/power you think you have. While not seeing the big picture. Tunnel vision is a b**ch. Think back to when you were 4yrs old, standing at the top of the slide, yelling at your parents to look at you, as you threw yourself forward, into the abyss. And you were free.
