Mario: Is He the Guy, or Just the Guy Before the Guy?

he better be the guy
with NIL and free transfers
it will be rare for guys who inherit full cupboards unless in unique situations ala saban
but for coaches who are let go bc they are jags
its full rebuild mode coming in todays NIL

If he ain’t the guy, we’re ****** in my opinion. For all his flaws, he actually cares. This ain’t just a job or resume booster for him.

I want him to succeed, we’ve been a middling program for over twenty years now.

2017 was actually a pretty elite program. Defeat top 5 Notre Dame by crushing them after beating a ranked VTech team and nearly taking down Wisconsin in the Orange Bowl.

blip in the radar
just a one time thing
similar to TCU making the playoffs a couple years ago
this year is huge to show back to back 10 plus wins

A great question because of the timing. This year will answer it. We are going to lose so much talent after this season, even with the portal, their will be a drop-off. The odds are we don't get another QB on Cam or Beck's level. I bought into Heatherman and his staff early and I feel even better about them now. I believe Heatherman puts him over the top. If young players develop during the season, this team could be better than expected.

So James Franklin
Spot on. He started out 14-12 at Penn State and then went 11-3 in year 3.

After those first 2 years coming off sanctions, aside from 2020 and 2021 has been a top 15 team year in and year out. Never over the hump. That's what I expect.

Miami has better NIL and an easier path. Assume catching lightning in a bottle this year or landing another stud transfer QB next year and we could maybe make a bigger splash than Franklin has ever been able to do. Aside from that, and the window for that is closing quickly, not sure how you can argue Mario/Miami is any different or better than Franklin/PSU (ignoring the rapey stuff from that school).

It's not been the lack of caring that has cost us over the last 20+ years. It's been a combination of lack of investment, top-down mismanagement of the program, and coaching incompetence, with a bit of bad luck sprinkled in.

Love him, hate him, or in between, at this point a successful Mario is probably the best chance this program has to avoid another 20 years of mediocrity. Based on his track record and current trajectory of college football, there's cause for concern.

The posts just above this one are spot on. If he doesn't succeed, we're in long-term trouble. Who would be next? Who are we getting that has the recruiting chops that he has (even in a weak ACC etc)? Kirby and Sark ain't coming here.. Yes, there are plenty of gameday questions based on actual recent experience.. hopefully we overcome those this year and compete for ACC and national titles..
FYI - you can select "Reply" button in the far right corner of a post and refer the post directly like I'm doing here.

The only counter argument I’d make is that NIL is changing the game and top tier talent is more spread around. And the will only increase in the future.

The days of Bama stockpiling all the talent are over. That’s why Saban left when he did.

If Miami continues to have a strong NIL program and eventually makes it to a P2 conference, there is still a chance to win championships. There is still a large subset of kids that would rather play in Miami than an SEC college town. And when Miami is on top, there is no cooler school.

To me, in this new era of college football, it’s going to come down to QB play. If every contender has a solid 1st string, but everyone kinda has holes everywhere due to the portal and NIL spreading the talent around, then the teams with the best QB play will win. That is a concern with Mario as HC, unless he can keep hitting in the portal. Buts FSU learned, you live by the portal, you die by the portal.

I think eventually (sooner than later, probably) you’ll see the players get employee status, there will be collective bargaining, contracts, etc. Will that hurt or benefit Miami? I haven’t really given that much thought. But until that day comes, I don’t see why UM isn’t in just as good a position as everyone outside those 4-5 big spenders like Texas. Get to the playoffs and hope for positive variance to get ring number 6.

All of our failures have been related to high estrogen levels of fans. We need more tuff and fizical porsts. Can someone supply the board with some bathtub test or let me know where to get some?
You familiar with "tubgirl"? If not and you decide to google it, be sure you're not at work....
Might also want to wait until your lunch has finished digesting.

He's Butch Davis. Great recruiter, great program builder, mediocre to bad strategist and gameday coach. Acquire enough talent and build the infrastructure and he can win big. But he's not going to be winning championships as a chessmaster.

I may be in the minority here but I truly do belive if Carson Beck has a season like 2023 and he can stay healthy along with a stout aggressive defense and Mario improves his day game coaching decisions we have a shot at the National Championship. To realize that the mission is achievable we must win the ND and FL games. By the way I'm not smoking any weed like some of you. lol

Agree but there's still some lingering draw to the SEC and Big 10. Teams aren't stock piling like Bama for a decade and a half and then Georgia but we're still sitting outside the top 10 just because of the conference we're in. Those 2 conferences are stock piling but split across 10 teams.

We're right on the outside of that but I think we see the effects this year more than ever of what it looks like to be "close" at the top end but we've also done as well as anyone at keeping quality players around that haven't played yet. We're not as top end talented as Clemson but we're deeper and more balanced. Does top end talent win the ACCCG or does quality depth with enough talent?

We're about to find out in 2025 if our formula works. Focus on LOS and QB and then add quality depth through the portal, not really major difference makers outside of QB (although we did get a few like Lucas and Poyser) and focusing on retention of our HS recruits instead of letting 4-5 of them walk to bring in 1 top end guy like some places are doing. I'd argue we should have done that at WR but we didn't. We could have hypothetically let Carr, Ray Ray, & Robinson walk, and then let Moore flip back to Florida and bring in Eric Singleton for the same price and we opted to retain what we had. Hope it pays off.

Not sure why the odds would be we don't get another Cam or Beck level QB. If Beck is great here, if anything I think it means are Odds are Good we do get another QB to those levels - AKA a top 2-3 QB in the portal. I mean I guess this assumes Dawson is still OC here...

But there are plenty of QBs who could be on the move in 2026 for various reasons, but like especially if some HCs get fired. Like what if Napier or Venables lost their job? What if someone like Demond Williams or Dylan Raiola want to truly compete for a NC? What if Hoover, Sorsby, Becht, etc return and are looking to move up? And if we turn Beck back into a 1st rounder, that'd certainly get all Qbs interested in coming here...

If the money is there like it has been the last 2 seasons, I think we absolutely would be the favorites to land the top QB in the portal again.

For all the handwringing here, if not Mario, then who?

oh, you know, don't you? Deep down you want to say it.

You NEED to say it.

Don't you.
