Mario: Is He the Guy, or Just the Guy Before the Guy?

In my opinion, Mario’s success here is more about proof of concept. We need to show boosters/administration that there is long term ROI to investing in the football program. A big part of this will obviously be getting into a P2 conference.

I worry that if he can’t prove this new model of investing into athletics, this program will be more dead than it was 5 years ago.

I support Mario right now because the people with $$ do. It won’t matter who we hire after if this level of financial backing dries up.

2017 was actually a pretty elite program. Defeat top 5 Notre Dame by crushing them after beating a ranked VTech team and nearly taking down Wisconsin in the Orange Bowl.
ND was a paper tiger with a mediocre QB and overrated defense. It was fun beating them down but they weren't world-beaters. That 2017 team was a lot of fun to watch but were deeply flawed. Got exposed badly by an actual elite team in Clemson. And people forget we needed 2 Darrel Langham miracles to squeak by lousy GT and FSU teams. We barely got by BAD Syracuse and UNC teams. We sh*t the bed entirely vs. a 4 win Pitt team. Good team, hardly elite.

He better win this year. We lose the oline, QB, half Dline, and LBs this year. I think he is a bum but maybe just the coordinators do their jobs and he picks his nose.
It's been like 5 years but some people still haven't adjusted to the reality of the portal era. Like 80% of this year's secondary wasn't on last year's team. I'll agree though 10 wins and playoffs should be the expectation.

If the premise of the money men will for whatever reason decide to stop investing into the program if Mario isn't the one to lead us to a Championship is to be accepted, then what does that mean for the program at large?

Does that mean that Mario should be given a lifetime contract based on the presumption that he's the only Coach they will spend money to support?

What happens if he retires? Do they discontinue the Football program because he's the only one they're ever going to give money to?

What if they keep investing money with him & only him, but he never wins?

Is it at all plausible that you all have invented this doomsday scenario in your heads & are projecting this idea as a means of your own justification for why YOU support/believe in him?
Your subversive crazy talk will not be tolerated.

“The guy that learned it from, The Guy” - One of Mamets best. Very underrated.

Coker wasn't any of those things but an okay OC (who benefitted from having NFL HOF players play for him) for his time. Why would you even bring him up? He was an awful recruiter and awful program builder and overseer. The board at the time desperately wanted him over Barry Alvarez for stupid reasons (because he coached in the BigX he'd supposedly bring a BigX offense to Miami) and the reality is Barry would have set us on a much better trajectory for the 2000s. There were better options than both but the veteran players walked into Paul Dee's office and demanded Coker, so they got Coker.
Sounds you’re not familiar with sarcasm.
