That's fair. Wasn't focusing on the behind the scenes battle, as I'm really not that familiar with what happened with him and the Foote administration. I'll take back the initial post.Wrong again....89-92 had no impact whatsoever in regards to the uphill battle Butch dealt with....NONE....The Administration HATED him....they Nit Picked him to Death about every F-ing miniscule expenditure. You can't fathom how hard Pagano, Kehoe, Sarge, and Curtis worked in regards to recruiting. You can't fathom the amount of kids we lost because of the Sanctions and bad look. The Administration didn't give af about the FB program AT ALL.
It is fascinating to think how short-sighted the administration was about the football program for so many years, even long after other schools proved that a highly successful team could be a significant revenue driver. Shalala and others before her seemed to view the program as a "nice to have, it's great if it does well, but it's not why we're here" sort of attitude. What's funny is that they weren't the only ones. I can remember around the time that I was at UM reading an article about how the University of Florida president at the time felt that the Gators football program was too much of a focus of his school, and he'd like to see that focus lessened. It might have been Marshall M. Criser - I've tried finding the article unsuccessfully.
