That's fair. Wasn't focusing on the behind the scenes battle, as I'm really not that familiar with what happened with him and the Foote administration. I'll take back the initial post.

It is fascinating to think how short-sighted the administration was about the football program for so many years, even long after other schools proved that a highly successful team could be a significant revenue driver. Shalala and others before her seemed to view the program as a "nice to have, it's great if it does well, but it's not why we're here" sort of attitude. What's funny is that they weren't the only ones. I can remember around the time that I was at UM reading an article about how the University of Florida president at the time felt that the Gators football program was too much of a focus of his school, and he'd like to see that focus lessened. It might have been Marshall M. Criser - I've tried finding the article unsuccessfully.

Butch was recruiting when miami was a few years removed of national dominance, Mario is winning recruiting battles after we sucked for 20 years.

Mario has TOTAL financial support from the BOT and Boosters....Butch had neither....It was 4yrs removed from dominance, and the last yr of so-called dominance we got our teeth kicked in by Bama, then Vodka boy ran off leaving the program in a complete mess. Not to reiterate, but take 31 schollies, and give Mario the sanctions Butch had last yr....and see how many recruiting battles Mario would win.....very few.

But what was the end goal? That’s what matters to me that was more historic and remembered than the down times to get there. No one speaks of that they talk of the 01 canes till this day.

Mario is in his second year. You must compare Butch’s first 2 years body of work to Mario’s.

butch was a first time HC. I dont even think he had coordinator experience.
he was learning on the job and couldnt even fill a practice field. no one had to deal with what he went through.
