I’m wondering how much autonomy Beck has compared to Ward. As a casual fan, I knew exactly what we were going to run, & just looking at the defensive formations, I knew the success rate would be around the 33-35% range.
If Beck was able to audible, there was a **** ton of yards available. I also find it interesting that Dawson got into it w Mario, & I’m not sure if it was Dawson that approached Mario or if Mario said something to Dawson that caused a response.
Either way it goes, Beck didn’t come here to be a game manager. U don’t pay that type of bread for a Trent Dilfer, u pay that for a Patrick Mahomes. For those who say this game wasn’t on Beck, u don’t understand the game w/in the game. If u’re looking at strictly box score numbers, u clearly don’t understand the nuances of the game.
Let me give u an example:
Late 4th qtr & we’re up, Beck dances around the pocket, holding on to the ball. He goes into scramble mode, causing several defenders to miss. Sure that’s fine, but the problem? He had a wide open receiver in that direction w/ no defender by them; that’s an easy 1st down on a crucial 3rd down play. The results? Incomplete pass w/ an Illegal Man Down Field penalty (& yes, this should’ve been off-setting penalties giving us a re-do). However, if Beck hits the short pass, we’re not even talking about this game in the light we’re talking now.
Beck keeps us in a phone booth; he places no pressure on a defense, & when u’re playing the 133rd ranked pass defense, this should’ve been a 300+ game w/ 3 TDs.
SMU’s opponents passing yrds v. P4/G6:
•Robertson (Baylor): 440 yrds / 4 TDs / 0 ints (8.8 ypr)
•Hoover (TCU): 379 yrds / 5 TDs / 1 int (9.5 ypr)
•Collins (Cuse): 279 yrds / 1 TD / 3 ints (6.2 ypr)
•Gulbranson (Stanford): 278 yrds / 1 TD / 1 int (7.0 ypr)
•Vizzina (Clemson): 317 yrds / 3 TDs / 0 int (7.5 ypr)
•Wake Forest (2 QBs): 217 yrds / 1 TD / 1 int (5.8 ypr)
•Beck (Miami): 274 yrds / 2 TDs / 2 ints (7.2 ypr)
Beck is supposed to be the 1st Rd QB out of this list, yet he had the 3rd least production against a porous SMU pass defense, & his 7.2 ypr is 4th worst. The irony?
-Collins was a 1st time starter
-Gulbranson IS a game manager from Oregon St
-Purdie WAS a game manager from Charlotte (WF)
-Ashford is on his 3rd team & was also a game manager (WF)
Those r the 4 QBs who had worst YPR games than Beck. So stop looking at the box score & understand Beck’s inability to threaten the deep game truly makes our O non-dynamic, which means it allows the Def to place 7-8 in the box at all times.
My fear w this team was w/o Ward, would we be dynamic enough to face better offensive teams if the Def can’t hold up? Blame the play calling & also blame our $4m QB whose eyes betrays him.
