Manny will call Plays in 2021, Jess Back as DL Coach

Let's say Diaz had gone to Temple as HC but it wasn't going well. Richt had hired Baker, but was in the market was a DC, and he had to choose to between Strong, Muschamp, Steele, and Diaz. I don't think we'd be upset at Diaz returning as DC because I think he'd be the best of those names; most of us would say the defense looked really good when he was calling plays and it wouldn't require a massive change in scheme.

It's not so much that Diaz is calling plays now, I just don't know if he can handle that along with HC responsibilities.
The issue is what is the purpose of keeping baker
I would understand if he was a good recruiter
But he hasn’t shown that ability, his lbs don’t look great so he’s not a great position coach
And now he doesn’t even call plays
Basically this is just manny keeping him to keep him paid

Agreed.

I think it’s b/c so much stock is put into hope & when rumors don’t fulfill or come to full fruition, the first thing to do is panic; especially w/ our long standing close to 20 yr history.

It’ll all work it’s way out one way or another. My only fear, is we win another 8 games & it’s considered bueno and things remain status quo or another “tweak” comes.

if that were the case, he would've been given an extension. thats the key. hes going into year 3 w no extension. he has to win big

NOPE.

Do not under any circumstances whatsoever believe anything that even attempts to say that Miami couldn’t afford to bring in a DC or more talented coaches, that’s a weak cop out crutch that people love to use as an excuse to let Diaz off the hook for not making good hires.

Miami has money, yes even after the Pandemic we have enough to bring in good coaches on the staff, the reason why Diaz stuck with his guys is because they’re his guys & he didn’t want to go away from his Defense.

This is squarely on Diaz, not lack of resources, or even because some coaches allegedly didn’t wanna come here, any excuse made is 1,000% bullshìt.

We didn’t get a new DC because Diaz didn’t want one, he believes his Defense is not the problem & he doesn’t want to concede that the way his system is ran has major flaws in it.

💯

Makes sense.

But if Rumph iz pointing out different guys he wanted that are better, it eould show he knows how to spot the right guys. Now will Manny lizten to him if this iz the case who knows.

I personally believe if Manny wasnt protecting Blake, Rumph would be gone.

People hate Rumph because of his recruiting failures. They are seeing this emotionally. I am looking at it different. I doubt every member of a recruiting department is a great dalesman. You need guys who can break down and evaluate players too.

Rumph is a starter on a national title team, high nfl pick that was in the league a few years, head coach at a major south Florida school and performed decently on field as a college position coach. A guy with that pedigree is obviously a pluz to the recruiting department as long as his job isn't selling to recruits, which he has proved he doesn't do well.
Ultimately I think recruting DBs will come to what TRob wants. The Rumph reassignment was a nice severance package with a salary, little responsibility and low stress as a thank you for getting demoted.

I think in the NFL only Riverboat Ron Rivera is a HC that calls defensive plays. Maybe there is one more I'm forgetting
That’s pretty spot on, although this year due to Ron having both cancer & Covid he relinquished play calling duties of the Defense to Jack Del Rio for the most part, but in most of his years in Carolina he called the Defense.

I think Adam Gase called his own plays on offense with the Jets, but he got fired so there’s that lol.

Sean McVay in his first season as Rams HC called all the plays on offense, but since then realized that it was too much on his plate & gave up play calling duties to his OC.

I believe Gruden still calls his own plays on offense too, but if any Raider fans know better please correct me.

But for the most part you’re right, the majority of NFL coaches delegate down play calling to the Coordinators.

Vic Fangio might be the only other one who calls plays, but if you know about Fangio you know he had over 20 years as a DC in the league before getting the Broncos HC job.

I'm worried about Simpson's ability to recruit.
My concern as well. SoFla is loaded this year with DL talent and we brought in a below average recruiter who doesn't even have a strong resume when it comes to who he developed. And didn't he leave for the pros because he didn't like the recruiting side of the job? Shemar Stewart will be his first big test.

the diff is richt was gonna let Banda call plays. this is Manny calling plays again.
And your under the belief that this is a good thing? Who do you think was calling the defense for the last two epic failure of games in the defensive side of the ball (UNC and OSU)?

Exactly. Most of those titles are window dressing to justify the salary.

Baker keeps the DC title on paper but essentially is a position coach. Manny wasn't going to cut him loose or publicly humiliate him. Keeping that title may also help him find another job....

Simpson is now the Assistant HC as well as DL. Helps give him a decent salary and hopefully, more input in defensive game plans.

TRob will coach the entire secondary and DVD will learn from him. DVD gets a title, bigger salary and the ability to go out of the office to recruit.
Hopefully TRob also gets some input into the game plan.

Patke is along for the ride

Rumph is keeping a job adn paycheck until something pops for him elsewhere. Clearly Ed and maybe other alumni looking out for him. I doubt he's going to actually do much "recruiting".

Manny put all his chips on himself. I am hoping that whatever "tweaks" they put into the defense will be enough......
Manny thinks the combination of him calling it with Jess coaching the front (he’s really good there and probably helped Manny to his best D in 18) and TRob coaching the back with a better emphasis on press coverage will significantly improve the product. We are also adding a nice CB in Stevenson. DVD is on field to recruit.

Will it work out? Who knows. But, we are better this way. I’d even say much better. Is that good enough? Time will tell.

So Rumph and DVD switched positions and Rumph is now a recruiting coordinator?

WTH IS GOING ON?

So Mandy fired nobody …

Baker is getting paid DC money? Does he take the day off when there’s a game?

You know what’s going on. Miami football

people have to stop focusing on titles. focus on what they're doing now. baker is just sitting out the end of his deal as a water boy. Manny publicly demoted him. id rather a new DC but were here so lets see if it works. if not, they'll be gone. as cribby has said -- win win
It’s not a simple dichotomy. If manny wins 8 games next year, he will not be fired and be given the opportunity to fire baker and patke and make a real dc hire...aka what he should do this year. We will be stuck in 8 ish win purgatory while manny is here. Wouldn’t doubt if t rob heads out soon and wouldn’t doubt if lashlee upgrades next year if he can. It’s a **** circle

Manny calling the plays should be an upgrade. If not, then we all know what happens.

DVD is just CB in name. Him switch roles with Rumph (who shouldn’t be here) is fine because T-Rob will be overseeing all and have final say in the secondary.

Jess is not Partridge but he’s solid. Blake is Blake and maybe next year he can be replaced.

What’s up with Patke? Staying as ST? It’s imperative to get Telly on the field as coach for recruiting purposes. Maybe there will be a switch there as well.
