there's no evidence to support this argument that his system "takes 3 years to implement" or whatever. the texas defense actually improved to top 10 in the country in his first season there, and the la tech defense improved dramatically in his only season there.

it's funny that this board spent 4 years begging to get back to an aggressive 4-3 defense (and rightfully so) but is somehow mad that we hired someone who is... too aggressive?

Do you even understand what his defense is? It's not a "four DL get pressure" system. It's a "let run something complex to try to trick people and have DEs dropping into coverage". There is a reason this guy got **** canned from UT.

For all the idiots saying "yay attacking defense!" allow me to explain how his defense attacks:

Via the zone blitz. This means that you will be seeing AQM dropping into zone coverage. This means a defense that is VERY confusing and often takes years to implement properly.

What you won't see is 4 men on the line just getting after it with man coverage behind.

Congrats, the mouthbreathers got what they want: a mediocre to poor DC who runs a 4-3.

There was a time when Manny Diaz was one of the hottest coaching names in college football.

He had a strong inaugural season at Mississippi State, where he produced S&P+'s No. 22 defense and had eye-catching results against the likes of Cam Newton's Auburn and Denard Robinson's Michigan. Then he took over Texas' defense and oversaw a top-10 defense against some of the best spread offenses in the nation.

From there, things came apart.

In Year 2, Texas slipped to 32nd in S&P, a fall that didn't capture the emotional weight for Texas fans of watching their team get mauled again by Oklahoma, allow Baylor to drop 50 in Austin and lose a shootout to West Virginia at home. The Mack Brown rebuild was stalling and the former whipping boy, OC Greg Davis, was no longer around to take the heat.

Mack hired old friend Greg Robinson to be an extra eye for 2013, but more likely as a fallback option in the event that Diaz's D struggled. After BYU obliterated Texas in Week 2, Brown pulled the trigger.

Diaz found a landing spot at Louisiana Tech and immediately elevated its defense from 114th in 2013 to 19th.
