Manny’s first real test as HC..,

Good stuff, my dude. I’m very optimistic Diaz will handle it well, but we won’t know for sure until he has to do it. I’ve said from the beginning that I see him as a potential Dabo type leader (keep football fun and loose but demand max effort). He’s a better technical football coach than Dabo, but that’s less important for a HC than being a great leader.
100%.

Dabo is a perfect example. Lincoln Riley also comes to mind. Both were already heavily integrated in the programs that they eventually took over. When Lincoln first took over for Stoops, everyone knew it was an instant upgrade, and that's no disrespect to Stoops. However, much like Richt in Miami, the fanbase was ready for a change. Both administrations chose to go for the "new energy" that already existed on the staff.

As you mentioned, Diaz still has to prove it, including winning games, of course. But the writing is on the wall. Without playing a single game, our program is better already. If this was last years staff/vibe/culture, I would expect for the situation to be toxic, because honestly Richt could not have handled the Rosier/Perry/Williams situation any worse than what he did. Diaz witnessed that clusterf'uck up close and personal, and therefore knows exactly what not to do. That alone, is something to feel good about, in my opinion!

How do you think he’s done so far? I didn’t like when he was hired as DC and I was wrong. I didn’t like when they brought him back so quickly to be HC, and so far I feel I’m wrong. Interested in how you see it up to this point...
I think he’s done an incredible job so far. His work in the portal was legendary and completely turned around what was a sketchy 2019 signing class.

He’s been phenomenal in the PR dept. too.

I’m not sure all of his assistant hires were the best, but we’ll see there. I thought he could have brought in another recruiting savage or two.

All in all, the dude’s been a solid A hire so far. He’s going to need to carry all this momentum into the field and show incredible leadership and steady motivation.

The great HCs all have one thing in common—they get their team to play at a very steadily high effort/intensity level all season. You don’t see the wild ups and downs in effort that we’ve seen here over the last 20 years.

I like when one of these young jerk knozzles come in and try to call him out and they usually walk out the door with a giant **** on their head with jitt dripping down their chin. They never learn.
They come at me like Ty Domi went at Bob Probert when Probert was the top goon in the NHL. Difference is The Legend never slips and has a granite beard.

All this really depends on how the situation plays out. If it really is a close race a kid might get ****ed off, be immature, and leave. The same could be said if one of them clearly won’t play over the other two.
The staff brought in Matocha as insurance in case one of them leaves. They didn’t bring in Matocha to be a starter. I know his tape looks good and he passed the eye test but be real. The kid had no major offers and was going to A&M as a preferred walk-in before we came knocking.
The staff has already secured an elite QB for 2020 and narrowed down 2021.
The big thing Diaz has to do is keep the top 2 guys on board. If the 3rd guy leaves then so be it. It’s doubtful a third string guy today would ever start over Enos’s Hand picked guys coming in next year or the year after. Diaz and Enos are already prepared for this situation.

Only way I see that happening is by not having a fair qb comp. If these any of these qb’s don’t play well in the scrimmages, that’s on them. Diaz and Enos is giving them a fair shot at the position.
Kids don’t care if you think it’s a fair competition. If they don’t win, they still think they’re better than the guy who did win. It’s up to the HC to massage the egos and manage them.

My point wasn’t necessarily about the third guy leaving or next year. It was about Diaz managing the disappointment this year and keeping the guys engaged and positive.

Somebody called him an idiot the other day, it made me giggle out loud because I knew what that poor soul was about to encounter.

I agree with the assistants comment but I love the Baker hire. To me showed he was more concerned with running the ship than the defense.

I agree with you on everything. I won’t lie, I wanted them to at least try and get Babers. But like you said, Manny has been grade A so far.

I also think Feeley was his best hire. Remember the people here griping because he didn’t come from Bama or LSU?

Manny will prove what kind of leader he is by how engaged he keeps the backup QBs. If the guys who lose the job mope around and tear up the locker room and start breeding factions, then Manny didn’t do a good job.

His main job as HC is to be a leader of men. He has guys in place to run the O and D. It’ll be interesting to see how the QBs (and their factions) handle not winning the job. It should be a fairly easy job to keep them engaged, as the winner shouldn’t be automatically anointed for the next 3 years.

I remember a couple years ago Sabag started that stiff who transferred 20 times then went to Hurts after 2 series. I think Helton started that Max Brown kid in that same game then wound up eventually going to Darnold, who was infinitely better.

Interesting take. As usual for OP. Worth keeping an eye one. Not sure I’ll fault MD if the third stringer transfers or isn’t engaged, but hopefully the first loser knows he’s a snap away from taking over for good. That said, we all know Jarren and Kosi have had some “maturity issues”.

I like the take and this is definitely something worth watching, but I’m not sure it’s s de facto referendum on HC Manny, though.

I think Babers would have been incredible here too. So far so good with Diaz.

When Dabo took over I thought he would be an instant failure. And he kind of was. I thought there’s no way his rah rah BS would ever work. But behind the scenes he established a culture where he had kids wanting to play for him. Energy passion a nd enthusiasm while being shrewd at the same time. And it all starts with managing the players and letting his coordinators coach. Just look at what happened with Kelly Bryant. He set the precedent that the best player would play and never backed down.
When Diaz started branding TNM and all that stuff on Twitter I knew we were headed in the right direction. We will see how it plays out but he has already managed to instill energy back into a program that just last year looked like there was no hope.

Personally, I don't think it is a much about the third string or even second string QB potentially transferring, as much as it is about making sure that the environment within the program doesn't become toxic. O$U has been "QB tranfer U" for the past few years, but they have been okay. UGA has had the #1 QB recruit and #2 QB recruits to transfer in back to back years, but it has not become toxic for the program. Diaz needs to do the same for Miami, and I for one, have no doubt that he will do just that if the other QB's decides to tranfer.

This also is where Dan Enos will come into play. He just did it last year with two 5 star quarterbacks!

The HC sets the tone. He’s the boss. The leader. You can’t abdicate that role to your coordinators. You can give them a lot of autonomy, but you need to have a clear hierarchy of power.

Not sure how Manny governs his team. I do agree that the head coach sets the tone and the staff need to follow suit for there to be team unity. The buck must stop at the head.

But it would not necessarily be an abdication of authority if you feel your right hand guy can handle a given situation like the one you bring up in his own department.

Smart leaders also delegate authority because they can't be everywhere at once.

Manny sits in those q.b. meetings but I am sure he lets Enos run the show. If things fall out of line of course the head coach should step in. But I think Enos has shown that he can handle any discord among the qbs and keep them focused without someone needing to step in.

Definitely agree with franchise on the assistant coach comments but all we can do is let it play out.

Im always curious to see what guys look like in year 3.

He has definitely handled the PR and social media aspect better than any coach we have had so far. As a first time HC I’m curious about his in game coaching ability and how he has the team battle adversity.

2018 FSU level adversity. Down 27-7 in the third quarter and find a way to come back and win the game.

Is he taking timeouts at the right time? Is he wasting challenges? Those type of things as well.

It will not be a problem. Guaranteed that whomever wins the QB battle, the other two will transfer. #17 will be the backup QB.

Just think of how we felt after the Pinstripe Bowl - literally I had never been that down as a UM fan.

Then the 12 hours after Richt retired, the disarray and confusion

To how the off-season went and where we are now

Just for that, I'm grateful for Diaz. Again, he'll be judged on W's and L's like every other coach, but the energy and excitement he has brought to this program is priceless. Just for that I felt I had to be in Orlando for his debut on our sideline as our CEO.

I'm driving the Manny Diaz bandwagon(OK, hold on, Im Asian, so let me sit shotgun)....
