Major Applewhite: The art of failing forward

It’s pretty obvious that it was.

Look at King's stats from 2017 and 2018. He started playing about mid season 2017 and came out balling from play one.
Came off the bench and finished 12-of-20 passing for 137 yards and a touchdown. He also ran 20 times for 83 yards and two scores in a comeback win against S Florida.

The foundation and development was there before Briles ever arrived. He helped but they were going to be great offensively no matter what.

define for me what you consider cutting edge? Who runs it? All I see at the moment in top offenses are variations of spread/tempo/rpo. What you are really looking for is a guy who understands those concepts, is aggressive, has a feel for calling plays, and adapts his offenses to the type of players he has at his disposal and to the defenses he is facing. Other than that you are just talking in vague terms.

I get it. The Major wasn't 1st on a lot of our OC wish lists. Let's say he was top 5 though. Knowing what we know now, where would Mork be on an OC wish list? Not even on it. Major brings a lot to the table. I'll take a top ten offense combined with a top ten defense combined with top ten ST play. Add those up and we compete for Nattys. If we get The Major and recruit well, we will be back as a relevant program pretty quickly. We have a HC that if successful, will stay at the U long term. He really wants to be here. I think his balls are big enough to handle Miami. Looking forward to the ride no matter who our OC is. Gonna trust Manuel for now.

This makes me question any coach though. How, why, and what was he smoking.

You can’t (rightfully) blame him for hiring Dino, but then give all credit to Houston’s 2015 offense to Herman - without giving him A TON of credit for its output as well. It has to work both ways.

Ask Manny that question. He was the guy at the press conference that stated he had 4 great OC prospects that we’re cutting edge. I had visions of a group of dynamic guys that were offensive wizards, but instead we get Applewhite. What???

When you set the bar that high at your press conference you can’t trot out Major Applewhite as your leading candidate. A guy that’s failed, has been fired, and has been mediocre far more than he’s succeeded. C’mon, let’s be real. It’s a MAJOR letdown (pun intended)
They’ve all been fired. At least anybody w HC experience whose gonna join this staff has been fired.

Manny was fired. Dude learned from it and got better.

I’ll take a dude whose taken his beatings and improved from it. No reason not to assume that’s what manny is looking for.

Um. Yes, because Coley was known for being an elite at SOMETHING (scripting drives), also like I said, Coley is easily one of the Top 40 recruiting coaches. We KNOW where his offense can improve and we KNOW his weakness. Applewhite has not been known for recruiting, and has been fired for performance 3 times now, twice as an OC.
Coley has been fired a grand total of 0 times. He coached Andre Johnson, Roscoe Parrish, and Dwayne Bowe as a high school coach. Who is on Applewhite's resume?
Coley could only script an opening drive. After that his play calling sucked and once a team made adjustments on him we had nothing to counter. Remember everyone complaining that we didn't adjust to anything for years? Coley was a part of that.

Also name for us the real difference makers Coley recruited here? Coley is only an elite recruiter when he has ELITE bags behind him. When he was here and didn't have bags, he sucked at recruiting.

They didn't adjust to Coley, he just changed his play call to slow the game down most of the time because our defense would get gassed. We had a quick offensive series with Coley. Either we went 3-and-out, or we scored off explosive plays. We had 3rd down problems with Coley as OC. I'm not advocating to have him as our OC. I'm saying I'd prefer him over Applewhite because he's a better recruiter and we know what to expect from him and Diaz's strength is his weakness (making adjustments). Also, he won blue chip recruiting battles against FSU (Stacy Coley), Alabama (Chad Thomas), and even a few west coast schools (Brad Kaaya). So how exactly did he suck?

The thing that scares me away from Applewhite is the following:

-He hired D'Onofrio, after Onofrio caused Al Golden to lose his job. (Oh look, Onofrio got 2 head coaches fired now)
-I can't for the life of me figure out what his offensive philosophy is. His time as an OC in Texas was good, and acceptable for a Miami Hurricane offense if he could get that here. But Is that what he'll run? Because that's not what Houston ran under Herman, and it's not what Houston ran under Briles.
-Got fired from 3 different schools now. Including by Nick Saban after 1 year.

I can already see the first "Man, he's nothing without the bags." comment.

How good was Saban without the bags at Michigan State? LOL
****, even when he won a title at LSU, he went 8-5 the year before AND after.
Nick Saban is who he is BECAUSE of the resource advantage he consistently ensures he has.

How does this man do it? What is his secret? Has there ever been a college coach that’s failed forward more the Applewhite?

Mediocre offenses at texas
Fired from Alabama
Mediocre offenses at Houston as OC
Fired as HC at Houston

All this fail, yet somehow this man keeps getting jobs and he’s now the leading OC candidate at Miami, after being fired last week??? It’s not going to work, because he’s not that good at anything except failing forward.

C’mon, Manny...we deserve better...the players deserve a cutting edge OC you promised. Applewhite ain’t it!
AppleWHITE, not BLACK LOL!
