Luke Nickel last night

With the star/household name QBs we've had for 3 straight years going with Nickel next year would seem uninspiring
I think Nickel will really need to show something imo.

Next years offense in a lot of ways could be better. Mali/Moore/Upshaw going into year 3. Wingo, Spafford and the young guys we got coming in. I think Lofton/Mueller/Briggs/Gilbert TE room will make a jump.

We’ll lose Fletch but could return Brown/Pringle/Mallory/Lyle. Our OL with a year of experience should be better imo with Cantwell/Congdon/SJ/Max/ possibly Pancake returning. Could be the best offense in the country next year depending on our QB play.

But we are hunting championships. OSU hitched their hopes to Sayin and he folded against us because he’s not a playmaker. We’ve set the bar too high for Nickel to be the guy

I agree with this in principle, but if you look at the weapons we're adding to the ones we have-- particularly in that receiver room -- we might be one of the few programs that could trot out a old-style game manager and still be **** near unstoppable on offense

Pancake is going to play his way to the moon.

Also agree I’ve been on the Nickel bandwagon from Day 1. I think he can be really good. If we spread the 5+ million around the QB who’s to say for sure?

My head leans to the portal again but there’s certainly talent on the depth chart

Just a few series in a blowout but if we’re making predictions based on last night, looked like a career back up at this level to me. Would love to be wrong, but I don’t think he’s the guy.

Need to see more. He had some nice plays on the move evading pressure.

His deep ball has been underwhelming. The pick had way too much air, missed one earlier to spafford. And last year he had a deep pass that left me saying wtf?

But, too early for me to decide. He has positives and nice tools. Want to see him with an oline that can give him a few seconds (2nd string oline wasnt impressing me aside from Hawks).

Agreed. Nickel looks legit.

I just hope we get to see Coleman reps Thursday instead of wasting snaps on Judd.

As for the talk of Alabama, and Georgia, our OC heavily recruited two quarterbacks who won three championships for those schools; and neither guy was a blue-chipper (Stetson Bennett and Mac Jones).

Only way Nickel is never a QB1 here is if Coleman beats him out next year. Our staff makes certain decisions and sticks with it i.e. not grabbing a portal TE or portal C this past cycle. They said they won’t get a portal QB, and I see nothing changing on their stance.

Malik Washington, Austin Simmons, Brad Jackson & Drake Lindsay will all be viable options.

Austin Simmons gives off C.J. Bailey vibes with the way his hit-or-miss accuracy

At least that's how he seemed at Ole Miss. I only saw a few plays of Missouri's blowout against UAPB on Thursday.

He looked pretty solid. Two very nice throws but an overthrow to Spafford he should've had. Definitely wanna see him play most of the 2nd half cuz he needs reps. But I agree with other posters that its hard to believe he ever starts here with our hit rate in the portal. As long as we give him a fair shake to at least get a few quarters under his belt I'm good with however the process plays out.

In his Miami career he has had 4 chances to complete a deep ball. That has resulted in 3 ints and one pick. Although the pick clearly hit the ground.

Small sample size, yes. But so far the jury is out on his deep ball.

Too small of a sample size to draw much of a conclusion on his projected status for next year.

But he can throw, isn't panicky under pressure & has a nice arm.

I'm still unconvinced he'll be the starter next year. I would wager we hit the Portal again for best QB available.

Way to early for this but….Malik all day

Definitely too early to come to any definitive conclusion. We've used the portal because we've had to, but Mario doesn't seem to want to be put in that position moving forward. He gave Emory every opportunity to take the job and he didn't. Let's see what Nickel can do before we just write him off
