Look to the Transfer Portal: Discussion thread

Man IU is not messing around…

They’re serious about sustaining this thing…
31st best High School recruiting class gives you a lot of leeway to add Transfers.

Cignetti will have to hit on the Portal every year to sustain this - although he probably will.

Going to be harder hitting on new guys rather than his own guys in the portal

most of the guys he’s landing seem to have legit college production. This isn’t like fspoo where they got lucky and then tried their hand at getting the dumped blue chips
In general the portal has come a long way since that FSU season they almost made the playoff. It is now a viable way to build a roster. The portal has not only gotten stronger but the HS was has also lost some of its roster. Now that’s not saying HS recruiting is going out of style but there has been a a shift in how you build rosters and acquire talent.

The 4 rosters aren’t even sniffing the playoff without the portal. Take us for example, we weren’t even supposed to rely on the portal initially but were forced to and it more than worked out. IU and Ole Miss are basically portal creations multiple years in a row. TT is just getting started as well.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn’t Lane a lazy HS recruiter? I believe because of that Ole Miss was forced to build a good roster through the portal.

Lazy is a strong description. He certainly isn’t the insistent machine Mario is. The institution of the portal allows coaches that prefer and/or excel at the coaching part to operate at a higher level now. Whereas previously recruiting was something you had to do no matter what. With the portal you are able to take established talent that also fits your scheme best. Of course there have been some exceptions to the rule with Riley who was an up and coming star tha you figured would have only gotten better with the portal but has thus far faltered.

Here is the reality, Lane took a doormat in Ole Miss and became its most successful coach ever relying mainly on the portal. Again, he is now Mario in terms of effort but if he was really that lazy, he would suck at the portal as well.

Fair enough. But I will say recruiting a HS kid is way harder than a portal. We are talking potentially years of recruiting versus a two week period that is basically agents talking to admins. Not a head coach making a special trip to sit on some parents couch.

We got a lot of pieces to replace come next season. Can't be blowing a wad on mediocre players. Got to find the guys that fit our mentality. Gonna be a lot of guys looking to jump on the train that just don't embody who we are. Trenches are the priority especially when your replacing 3 1st round picks.

A couple of thoughts that I have re: how we're operating in the portal:

We're in a very unique position relative to other teams remaining in the playoffs given we are back on campus for good, win or lose, beginning on Friday. The portal window for entrants closes a week from today and I truly believe the staff sees a world where pushing to get guys in beginning this weekend - potentially as we prep to play a national championship game on our own home field - makes far more sense than scrambling to do the same thing this past weekend as the first wave entered, and really only having 2 days before the team left for Arizona. Not saying it won't cost them a player or two that they really wanted, but the schedule really didn't do us any favors.

With that said, I still think we have at least a few guys in the boat already (Jacobs and Thornton and perhaps 1-2 others) and the staff has told them to hold off on announcing until after Thursday. Pete/D$ eluded to this on the pod this morning.

LSU boards are melting down over missing on Sorsby, Lacy (seems to be re-signing) and Chambliss.

Lane is off to a rip roaring start and oh btw, not a single scholarship QB on the roster.

That is going to end in a train wreck.
LSU will just rip off the Children’s Hospital again and give Leavitt $12 Million. They have already done it before. Look it up, that actually happened
