Lol at the UGA fanbase

Counterpoint here is that UGA fans look at the talent in that state and feel it should've produced a ship by now, or should've under Richt, rather. Especially without another major power in the state.

The problem with that is the same as USC and UCLA fans thinking they should be elite "just cuz" there's truckloads of talent in California. It just doesn't work that way. Additionally, Ga is dead center of ACC and SEC country. The state is prone to being cherry picked -- even when UGA is flourishing.

I think Richt's biggest sin, besides legitimately not finishing better, is that he became old to the fan base. He aged on them. So they wanted a change. It wasn't because Smart was so great. It's because Richt got stale.

Does anyone doubt that we'd be saying the same thing about a Miami coach with Richt's record?

They're delusional & envious of Bama, plus they're nervous that they won't have the East on lock anymore now that Richt is gone.
I actually think Kirby Smart is going to be a colossal failure at Georgia, because the expectations will be too high from the fans & admin thinking they're getting a younger version of Saban.
Although, I still hope they kick UNC's *** to open the season...

Agreed, but I hope UNC beats Kirby's ***! I hope he looks so lost out there without Satan to guide him! I'm thinking that CMR will be the next JJ here! Let's go Canes!

Just read this article on the AJC about Coach Richt....can someone tell me why their fans hate Richt so much? It's not like they have some rich history of wining titles in every decade....he is arguably the best coach they ever had. They are severely delusional

They have the right to be upset and hate him. UGA underachieved many times. Watching other schools perform better is never a pleasant thing.

Mark is here at UM now. So I am hoping we finally hired the right coach so that we can all enjoy the season again. If he can win basically 10 games a year at UGA he should win big at UM because our schedule is so soft. Under Mark I think we stop losing to teams that we had no business losing to like we did in the past.

My in-laws live in Athens and my sister-law is a professor at UGA. Everyone I talk to when I'm there (and it's a lot of people, since I always wear a Miami hat), tell me "you got a good one (Richt)," or "we're going to miss him (Richt)." Apparently, I haven't met those who frequent the message boards.

They miss him,... but they don't. Both schools are better off. Coaches going against Saban and others in the SEC need to be cutthroat, and Richt is not. He can win at Miami though.

Plenty of Bulldogs feel firing Richt was a mistake and have said they will root for Miami as a result.

No doubt at all. We would have a lot less tolerance at Miami given our lightning in a bottle mentality. Let me state, I believe Richt was the best hire, but I do wonder why Georgia fans are sour. I understand the overall lack of a championship, but was there something in his gameday execution that infuriated fans? We've been so accustomed to incompetence (offensively with Randy and everything with Al), I think we believe (rightfully so) that a semi-competent coach will equal 2-3 more wins in the first year.

Question: is there something, based on Richts history, that will annoy fans this season (win or lose)?

Again, he was the best man for the job IMHO.

I'm one of those UGA fans. I'm a big Mark Richt fan & now a Hurricane fan. Got the gear to prove it.

We wanted to lynch a coach who went undefeated his first two years, won a NC and got cheated out of a back to back NC. Why would they not hate him. I like Mark but this is Miami, if he doesn't play for NC within five years we will be flying banners.

Im sorry but cokerr was just a pawn, that was Butchs' team. And yes, we did get robbed from back to back titles!

Friends of mine are close with some people who went to church with Richt. Lifelong Dawgs fans. Now they're Canes. Haha. Crazy.

1) Losing will irritate a lot of people.

2) Clearly being the class of the ACC and yet losing to inferior opponents. Having the best athletes on the field and yet not dominating like it.

3) When the team is elite, and everything is laid out for a run to the playoff, and we crap the bed in the ACCCG.

4) We win the conference and CG but have an early season loss to a dumb OOC squad and finish 5th or 6th in the nation.

Those types of things seem to be Richt's style.

There have been plenty of UGA fans on this board saying how we got a good coach and they regret him getting fired. I think the ones championing him being fired are the ones who will champion anything their team/school does. If you are worried right now you are reading too much into what a few ra-ra fans are saying.

I can say for me this hire got me excited about the program again in ways I have not been for a long time. If change starts from the top down you can see it from the president of the school on down. Putting effort and money into the team and the coaching staff again which has not been done in such a long time.

Totally agree he's the best we could hope for.

But now suppose after year 5 Richt has had us close to a NC 3 times but we haven't quite gotten there. What do we do? I assume we're considering firing him at that point, but to replace him with what? What's the better, doable option?

Most of the UGA fans I've talked to weren't very happy about Richt getting fired. Many of them now claim Miami as a "second favorite" even thought they have no other ties to the program.

It's a double edged sword when it comes to firing a successful coach. On one hand, the program had plateaued. They couldn't beat Florida. They weren't winning conference titles or competing for national titles. They had high expectations that weren't being met. On the other hand, it was Rich who made those expectations. Georgia has one national title in the modern era and that was 36 years ago. They were a mediocre program at best for most of the 80's and 90's. It wasn't until they hired Mark Richt that they became a national contender again. People talk about all the in state talent but that hardly guarantees success. Texas and California are loaded with players and there's plenty of big time programs in those states that haven't sniffed a natty in years, even decades. I think UGA fans are hoping Smart can get them over the hump and it's possible he does it. It's also just as possible they fall back into the middling team they were before Richt got hired.

I live in Athens, Georgia do not let anyone tell you that there is a worse fan base than the puppy dogs. I'm 21 years old and literally every year of my life they have claimed that they will win a national championship. Have not even come close to winning one and yet they still think that. It's awful having to put up with them I cannot wait for North Carolina to beat them and then start hearing people wanting Kirby to get fired. They really think they have some rich history with football even though they don't. Yeah they have Herschel but that's pretty much it.

Richt lost big games he should have won and Alabama consistently pulled top talent out of GA. It is the equivalent of us always losing to FSU every year and they winning the National Championship a handful of times with players from Miami. I like Richt and think he will do well at Miami, but his firing was just.
