But, Lightfoot has to know he’ll get the flag because in the moment, all the ref sees is the QB on the ground.

Similar to a shoving match after the play. It’s common knowledge that the second guy always gets the flag, even though he didn’t instigate.

Is it right? No. But the ref is typically only going to see the second guy who’s on the ground.

Our players have to be a little more aware.

Look at the twitter zoomed in video in post 98 above, LF is running, QB lowers his head to initiate contact, LF pushes him back. He didnt even hit him with a shoulder, or helmet or anything, it was a two handed shove and the guy just flew.

I stand corrected, he absolutely did not initiate contact, just finished it. I was wrong

What? He blocked him. There's no reason to throw a flag there. He's a player capable of making a tackle.

We're not allowed to block anymore on a return? Wtf?

Not even just a tackle. Suppose the player who recovered the fumble bumbles it down the field and fumbles? This happens all the time and anyone pursuing the play could recover it. Any live player is eligible to and should be blocked. Especially if they’re engaging in contact.

This argument in opposition is ridiculous.

Yeah I think this is one you chalk it up to a fluke weird thing and dont come down on LF. When you drill into these guys too much not to touch the QB, that is when you see them let up on the sideline and the QB sneaks ahead for a few more yards. Or they start thinking too much. I am good with LF being a little crazed. The only coaching moment there is hey man, he aint catching Wilson from 20 yds away, no need to even hit him, let alone hit him hard, if he initiated contact just thud him up and keep him upright but I would be worried that instruction takes away some of his edge or joose so let her eat and run the throttle wide open and hope that BS doesnt happen again.

If I were Hetherman, I'd require a standing ovation in the film room for Lightfoot. QB became a defender after the fumble. He decided to pursue the ball carrier. Lightfoot did everything right, by the book. Even avoided a crackback/blindside block, got in front of him. Well done young man, well done.

Mario should lodge a complaint with the ACC. Horrible, horrible call. Three egregious calls this game -- the Wilson roughing the passer early on, this one and the Toney PI. Every one could be a game changing call in a close game. this referee crew needs to go back to reffing school.

I think he did.... I am pretty sure it was on Rose, he was asked about all the penalties and he started by saying well we are waiting on clarification from the league on a few, to me that is him saying we called them out on this BS, we dont think a bunch of calls were actual penalties and if you take those away the penalties in this game are minimal. He went on with his normal coach speak about being smart, disciplined, how even if you dont agree you need to abide type of stuff but I thought it was a nice way to criticize the officials and calls without getting fined. I would love to see what the ACC came back with on the LF hit and if they double down or simply say yeah official missed the call, sorry.
 
Believe the officials feel sorry for teams & call half-*** mercy penalties in hopes of avoiding ultimate humiliation.
