Let's take a break from Indiana, tickets and the portal

Grew up in the Florida Keys(Key West) in the early 80’s as a kid and it was all about Cuban food, 2 Live Crew, watching the speedboat races, going fishing off the Seven Mile Bridge with mom and pops, but most importantly….Miami Hurricanes football. I’ve always gravitated towards teams that everyone hates. I’m also a Yankees fan(my dad was born in Staten Island) so it was ingrained in me at a young age but I also love the fact that so many people hate them. It’s that whole “Us against the world” mentality which is the reason I’ve always loved my Canes. I grew up loving Bratton, the Blades’ brothers in the early years, then I remember being at Doak and losing 47-0 to Free Shoes, then we had one of the most dominant 3 year runs in CFB history(00’-02’), followed by a two-decade disaster, to lead us to where we are now. Miami’s dominance has ebbed and flowed throughout the years, but it’s been one **** of a ride and I never abandoned them no matter how dire it got. When we hoist that trophy next Monday I know I’ll have a tear in my eye because these last 20-25 years have been ****, but I wouldn’t have it any other way because I LOVE MY CANES.

There is definitely something about the “Us against the world” mentality that appeals to all Hurricanes fans. It must say something about our collective personalities that we prefer the team that others hate. It is like a counter-culture aspect to us and the Canes.

The fans have taken on the personality of the city, especially the city in the 80s

Miami in the 80’s felt like the coolest place to be, if you thought money, sun, the beach, drugs, beautiful women, the Spanish language, and Cuban food were cool. Which pretty much sums up all Canes fans who were old enough to be there. Back when South Beach was still a row of 2-3 story boutique hotels.
 
It's funny, because growing up down off of 174th Street, I had no idea about all the "Miami Vice" and "Scarface" stuff. Didn't really realize how Miami was viewed until I was older.

I lived off 168th before you were born. I remember riding bikes through all the cleared land where they were putting up homes.

Fell in love with the Hail Flutie game. I thought Mel Bratton was amazing. First game I saw live was at the Big House in 1988 when Walsh stormed us back to victory. First game in Orange Bowl was as a student in 1991 against David Klingler and the overrated Houston Cougars. Been to hundreds of games since.

Hold on. I was at the ‘88 game in Ann Arbor. I was a senior in high school.

Were you at the game?

In the ‘70’s and early 80’s South Beach was sleepy. We’d go cruising down there and they closed up the sidewalks at 9 PM. Exploded in the late 80’s early 90’s into what it is today.
 
I remember the media hate in 1991 as a 16 year old who didn't care about football at all, but my dad was a Cowboy and UT fan - raised in El Paso, TX.

Being the contrarian/hold humans accountable for civil lilberties ****head that I am, I immediately adopted them.

In early 99' When considering lawschools after doing well-ish on LSAT, I got an offer for the James Weldon Johnson Scholarship - Summer program from UM.

Already had "full ride" offers - (IYKYK) to Denver U, St. Johns, Case Western, and had been accepted to Chicago...But that ******* logo triggered something in my plums and the setting - well, cmon.

I justified it to my support network that UM's Internet/Entertainment law stregth - Froooomkin!!! -(Really just wanted myy balls crushed by Gaubautz and didn't know it yet)

- but really, it was just THE U. I had to go - got here and we were domiinant at the time and I still did't know shibitz about football - but the source identifier I glommed onto. I was all in.

Only started REALLY caring about FB as a sport once we started the decline - had to understand why we weren't steamrolling everyone anymore, LOL.

I spend way too much time here, still don't know **** bc I never played, but cotdammt if I don't BO&G.

Grew up in KY. My dad loved the city of Miami and The OB. Remember watching "Howard's" team win championship. Parents and I came to Miami when I was 5 years old. Said I would live here someday. At least I am close enough (Ft. Myers). Also, grew up watching The Orange Bowl Parade. Watched projector slides my dad made when he attended and Orange Bowl game before I was born. Have always loved the city of Miami, and The U. Finally, completed a Spanish class at UM, which was my life long goal. The State of Miami!! #GO CANES!!

From the late 40’s to the mid 50’s, my father managed a hotel on South Beach for a Cuban millionaire. When Castro started the revolution, that Cuban millionaire fled Cuba to Miami, took over his hotel and fired my father. My father went to work as a janitor in the Orange Bowl and worked his way up to Stadium Manager.

I've posted it on here a few times -- the 09 season opener against FSU. Have been hooked ever since.

It's always interesting to hear other's stories because I've always felt like a "late bloomer" since I watched my first game at 15 and everyone always had these amazing childhood memories lol.

I was there too, remember telling my fanatic wolverine friends who never came closer to Ann Arbor than I-94 the '88 Canes can play and win in the NFL. They found out. Loved the Pukeagain silence after the victory 🙌
