Let's take a break from Indiana, tickets and the portal

I know this is a thread that often pops up during the offseason, but why not now?

How/why did you become a Hurricanes fan and what was your first game?

I was born a Cane. My mom's side of the family has lived in Miami since the 40s and has been going to games since the 50s. Both of my parents also taught at Miami at one time or another. I didn't have a choice. I grew up in the Orange Bowl (had my Bar Mitzvah party there, and Melvin Bratton was one of the guests).

My parents told me the first game I went to was in 1982, but I was 3 and don't remember. The first game I remember going to was in 1985 against Louisville. I don't remember much about the game, but I remember going. The first game I remember a lot from was the 58-7 win over Notre Dame in 1985.
My brother when to UM early 80's. Had class with Jim Kelly although he said Jim was never there LOL. My brother was in ZBT and I got to hang around campus as a youngster. Started season tickets in 80 and have been a season ticket holder since. I unfortunately did not have the grades to go to UM and went to Dade Wolfson Campus before dropping out to start my own company. Those that were at UM in the early 90's might have seen my (CD Music Vending Machine) at the rat. Sat in the Wez at the OB and now Endzone at the Rock.

Grew up in the Florida Keys(Key West) in the early 80’s as a kid and it was all about Cuban food, 2 Live Crew, watching the speedboat races, going fishing off the Seven Mile Bridge with mom and pops, but most importantly….Miami Hurricanes football. I’ve always gravitated towards teams that everyone hates. I’m also a Yankees fan(my dad was born in Staten Island) so it was ingrained in me at a young age but I also love the fact that so many people hate them. It’s that whole “Us against the world” mentality which is the reason I’ve always loved my Canes. I grew up loving Bratton, the Blades’ brothers in the early years, then I remember being at Doak and losing 47-0 to Free Shoes, then we had one of the most dominant 3 year runs in CFB history(00’-02’), followed by a two-decade disaster, to lead us to where we are now. Miami’s dominance has ebbed and flowed throughout the years, but it’s been one **** of a ride and I never abandoned them no matter how dire it got. When we hoist that trophy next Monday I know I’ll have a tear in my eye because these last 20-25 years have been ****, but I wouldn’t have it any other way because I LOVE MY CANES.
You should of been there in the mid-late 70s, i.e., scenes similar to Johnny Depp in Blow, Bahia Honda camping, Crandon Park BBQs, Fronton Jai Alai, Burger King home game tickets, campus concerts (Zappa, Steven Stills, Kenny Loggins, etc.) by the pool, walking by the Rat and never making it to class 🥴

I was sitting in my cold, furniture-less apartment in 1976, doing my homework as I was attending Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville (I had moved there from Miami). I turned on the radio to hear some music. Flipping stations, I heard stadium raucous and a screaming announcer for the Gators on one of the stations. They were playing Miami and had just had just scored. I thought of the obnoxious classmates who were gator fans, I remember choosing to root for the Canes, to pizz them off. Of course, the U lost that game, but something about the U being my Miami team, I got hooked.

I had watched the Dolphins during their 1972 run and was familiar with the name Howard Schnellenberger since, and when he got hired as HC for the U, my focus and love for the U was entrenched forever. I’ve told my wife to sneak some U paraphernalia into my coffin when I go. God must know when I see him.

Born and raised in Miami, my whole family are Cane fans first game I went to was actually in Tallahassee in 1981. Lived in South Georgia at the time, Bainbridge. Dad died suddenly and we moved back to Miami in '82 first full season was '83 😍

Grew up in a baseball family. Used to go to Canes baseball games as a little kid. Getting a high five from coach Ron Frasier was something that used to make my month.

In November 1978 my dad said, "The Canes have the best running back in college football and no one knows who he is. The Dolphins are gonna be able to snag him. Let's go see him play." So my first Canes game was on my 13th birthday in 1978 against San Diego State. (Of course the STL Cardinals drafted Otis Anderson #4 overall in the first round before the Dolphins pick. My dad was ****ED. lol)

Been going to games ever since.

Became a Canes fan through the baseball team at a very early age. My grandparents on my dad's side moved to south Florida in 1979. The first time I really remember being all in on football was the 1985 drubbing of Notre Dame, 58-7. I remember cutting out the story from SI and taping it to my closet door in Columbus, Ohio. Moved to Indiana in 1988 and was constantly defending the U all through middle school and high school with Notre Dame fans. I ended up marrying one (best decision of my life) but we make it work through football season.

Born into a Canes football / baseball household. We moved all over but my folks met living in Miami...Dad was a trasnplant from Baltimore who was looking for soemthing to do and got cheap season tickets in the late 70s.

I remember living in Wisconsin watching the comeback against UCLA at a local sports bar when I was 11...remember crying when we lost to Arizona in 94 and after the Warren Morris home run, living in Laredo, TX, for both...remember the Tremain Mack walkoff punt block against WV...remember thinking Magic Benton was the greatest receiver ever....remember the Sugar Bowl in 00 and the Rose Bowl in 01, the miracle against BC that got us there...enrolled in 05 thinking it was my birthright to win championships...been a long road, y'all.

I was born in 86 and my dad is a diehard Cane (and Dolphin). When I first really started watching CFB we were on probation in the mid 90's, and I never waivered. GO Canes!!!

Upstate NY. Everyone was rooting for ND or Syracuse when I was a kid, noticed some hate for the Canes. Loved the green and orange. Thought it would be fun to be the lone wolf. Never a regret.

Best Christmas gift to this day was a black 1/4 zip Canes Starter jacket when I was 9.

My first Miami memory was being on what I assume was an OV for my uncle (OL @ coconut creek/2 wide crew) when I was around 6 years old and sitting next to coach Erickson and looking out across an empty OB. I couldn't tell you what my first game was due to being so young. It's been a rough ride since the fiasco bowl robbery, but it's always all about the U.

For me it was something that just happened. Being a farm boy from Kentucky you would think I would've been a fan of a school in the Midwest or SEC. Thankfully I loved watching football at a young age and Eddie Brown and the Miami Hurricanes caught my attention.... the rest is history. 1st game in person was at Blacksburg in 01. Been to probably 20 games since that day.

The last 2 decades have been rough on us to say the least and as others in this thread stated...seeing CharMar Brown barrel into the end zone in the late 4th quarter against Ohio St. literally brought a tear to my eye. My fiancée looked at me and asked "what in the **** is wrong with you" 😄....of course you guys already know my answer" it's a Cane's thing, you wouldn't understand".

I lived off 168th before you were born. I remember riding bikes through all the cleared land where they were putting up homes.

When I was there, there still a lot of land. There were woods directly across from our house. It all changed after Hurricane Andrew.

I believe I am the generation born in the darkest days, I barely remember 2001 championship first game in person was 2005 VT.

I only remember darkness I'm 30 years old and I tell my friends with young kids that I know that their kids will have a better young canes life then I did and somehow that helps me it better for me.

Thank you Mario!

Tons of residence hotels with movie theater style seats on the front porch.

A lot of Holocaust survivors. A lot of it was rundown and dead until the 80s.

Someone on this board wrote a book about Miami from 1968-1994 and all the changes the city (and county went through), which includes a part on how South Beach and the Beach in general changed and a chapter on how Miami football changed the city in the 80s and a chapter on Luke. Not going to mention the posters's name, but he's pretty cool.

Used to go to Bahia Honda all the time, and Sunshine Key. We actually lived on Big Pine Key before Key West. Haven’t been back in years but thinking about going this summer.
