So, I've seen a couple of fairly new posters try to discredit Butch's coaching ability during his stint at UNC. First off, the argument is laughable. Someone posted his 15-17 record in the ACC during his time there; again, misleading information posted. So since these individuals are trying to discredit Butch the God....let's really examine what he did at UNC, shall we?

Butch came on board in 2007. He took over a UNC program that went 27-45 under John Bunting. He took over a program that had one winning season in the last 6 years. Sure UNC has produced great players like Julius Peppers, Dre Bly, and the great Lawrence Taylor, but let's be honest, everyone knows when you think of UNC, you think Dean Smith, Michael Jordan, James Worthy, Roy Williams and the basketball program.

In fairness, UNC is through and through a b-ball school, yet Butch took over a program and actually made them competitive in football, as well.

After the program went 27-45 in 6 six year under Bunting, including 3-9 right before he was fired, Butch established a 28-23 record while there in only 4 years.

Although he went 4-8 in his first year, signs of improvement of the UNC team was already showing. Out of the 8 losses they had that year, 6 came with an avg. loss of a 7pts or less and two came against two top 15 classes. Remarkable in itself.

Under Bunting, UNC lost games by an avg. of 19 pts/game. Under Butch? 8pts per game. UNC biggest point differential losses came against top 25 opponents, but for the most part, they were only a TD away, on avg, from a win.

Let's talk about the crap Butch inherited, which makes the above stat so astounishing; UNC is a basketball school, so they didn't receive a lot of interest from high profiled football recruits. UNC, on avg, recruited the 41st ranked class in the nation. That's what Butch had to work with playing against the likes of VT, FSU, Miami, BC, and Clemson. Losing was apart of their culture. UNC football was always considered "step-brother" to UNC basketball, both men and women.

In 2010, he lost 13 players, 3 of which were his best players in Little, Quinn, and Austin, and still went 8-5 including a bowl victory and the team still lost by only an avg of 9 pts (3 of the games were 3pts or less and two blow outs coming at the hands of us, when we were ranked in the top 25, and VT who was ranked in the top 20)

When Butch got there, in only his 3rd year there, he was able to obtain of a top 10 recruiting class at UNC...the first in it's history since RIVALS began ranking classes in 2002.

Let's discuss other accomplishments by Mr. Davis while he was at UNC....

-he beat a ranked opponent in 2008 for the first time in the last 11 years at UNC
-first time in school history he had UNC ranked in the BCS bowl consideration
-coached them to their first winning seaon since 2001 in only his second year
-coached them to back to back winning seasons for the first time in 11 years
-had a graduation rate of 75% during his tenure there, ranking him in the top 30 of coaches at public universities in the nation
-beat Miami 3 of the 4 yrs he was at UNC.

You see, what he did at UNC was nothing short of a miracle. UNC hadn't had a good coach since Mack Brown back in the mid-to-late 90's. Like at Miami, Butch inheritted a mess at UNC...the only difference is that Miami is known as a football school, playing in the hotbed of football recruiting. UNC is a basketball school, stationed in the hotbed of basketball recruiting, yet Butch made UNC into a respectable football school as well.

Trying to compare what he did at Miami, a school that had established itself as a dominant football power w/ 4 chips under it's belt to what he did at UNC, a school that has no tradition in football, is a true disservice. That's literally comparing apples to oranges. What he did at Miami w/ 31 lost scholarships was special, unique...but Miami was still a sleeping football giant. What he did at UNC was amazing. They had no football identity what-so-ever, and had a 38% winning pct before he got there!

Again, this is why Butch is the MAN for the job. Miami is nothing less than a sleeping Giant. Let the "program-whisperer" come back to awaken us. It's an obvious choice.

P.S-For those who say he's too "old" as a means to make an argument against the hire....here's some names to think about:

Pete Carroll, Bill Belichick, Nick Saban, John Fox, Les Miles, and David Cutcliff (all are 60+ in age, and all are kicking the crap out of the younger coaches on the NFL and NCAA level)

Spurrier, Beamer, Tuberville, Bowden, Brown----these guys were all legendary coaches during Butch's heyday and they ALL suck now. B/c THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS. Coaches, like players, have a prime. And when that prime ends, they aren't as good. You are chasing the ghosts of the past, and I'm saying we need to move forward.

Saw you already posted this same bull in Jennifer's thread. Look, if you don't like Butch, that's fine. The point is not to have buyers remorse. For those who tried to discredit him while at UNC, I had to hi-light what he REALLY did at UNC.

It's not about me "not liking him".

I just think the BBB crowd is setting yourselves up for huge disappointment when he can't re-create what y'all want. The expectation is too high, IMO.

He hired BLACK SANTA and they BOUGHT players to UNC...

His record sucked there even when cheating, kind of like Randy Shannon here at Miami under shaperio never knew anything and was cleared....

OK but he did have great players that were not coming any where near UNC without Mr Santa....

I erase what he did at UNC and give him a pass....his only credentials are Miami and what he accomplished here.

these BOTs we have making decisions will USE UNC and the ACC will not be happy either.

I can live with Butch really can, but get used to Mario that is the new GOLDEN child and a minority hire.

I hear you, and i know you usually don't post much on here, but when you do, I usually agree w/ you.

Here's my thing about Butch....yes, he's been gone away from the game for 5 years, but he hasn't been "gone away" from the game. He's around more college football, now, than he's ever been. Butch brings instant credibility back to the program; I think we both can agree upon that. Butch will also unite the family...as alum will be welcomed back, a true family atmosphere which made us so unique will be re-established. Butch also knows how to deal w/ the political elements this school presents. I'm not so sure another young, hungry coach will have that same type of fortitude.

I'm just tired of folks discrediting Butch, but they praise Cristobal...for what? Why put Chud here when he's looking for NFL pay? Herman is my other choice...not even sold on Hue Jack b/c he's like Chud, looking to get back into the NFL.

We need an architect, someone who's willing to rebuild us. Butch ACTUALLY wants to be here. Everyone else we have to convince and that's why I want Butch back.

So winning the ACC or obtaining 10 wins is something he can't accomplish? That's something that has eluded this program for quite some time.

UM has basically hired 3 first time head coaches in a row...with Golden having the most experience. 58-0 against Clemson was required to have this sorry admin step up....and it blatantly described the current state of the program. 12 years of less than mediocre can only be countered with a seasoned hand at the helm.

Butch is far less of a risk than anybody else. Those who are "Miami guys" that are available have been gone too long or simply aren't qualified. The attractive young guns like Herman or Fuente will have a learning curve in South FLA...like it or not.

Butch brings instant notoriety. Whether he wins at the highest level would be a question mark...but is there any better chance to get us there sooner? I don't think so.

What's non sense about it? Maybe it's the part about it being facts? I know those facts tend to get in the way of an agenda sometimes.

I don't disagree with your post. However, when you reference the 75% graduation rate in light of the cheating scandal going on, it kind of hurt your credibility.

I don't mind Butch but he's been out of the game for a while and as Sade says "it's never as good as the first time." I'm also not a Cristobal fan or any coordinator promoter. We should be after current head coaches, either pro or college.

If this is the best you have then this argument is not worth my time, total non-sense in this post.

What's non sense about it? Maybe it's the part about it being facts? I know those facts tend to get in the way of an agenda sometimes.

Lmao, you choose to be an idiot and not read, then get mad because people neg you for choosing to be an idiot. makes sense

You are chasing the ghosts of the past, and I'm saying we need to move forward.

.

No one knows what the future holds for UM. Maybe we will never get to the pinnacle again due to the stadium, ****** attendance, no indoor facility, etc., but I know this. Butch has a record of success. He put together the best college team EVER and pulled UNC out of the toilet. He probably would have created a national contender if given more time there. None of the other names have put together a winner - NONE. Winning at Memphis or Houston means jack. Sure, these guys have potential, but potential is something we can't afford. Golden had potential after turning around Temple. We need someone who has been to the pinnacle, not a strategy of hope.
