Oh my God. It was common knowledge.....how old are you?
There was a huge split on the coaching staff. Jimmy inherited a bunch of coaches from Schnellenberger. The offensive coaches for the most part worked well with Jimmy: Gary Stevens (QB and OC), Joe Brodsky (RB), Hubbard Alexander (WR). JJ inherited a great offense and players, including Eddie Brown, Bernie, ...oh, wait, I should put numbers 40, 20, 47, 14, 84....there, for you inconsiderate and lazy posters who insist we all remember numbers...
On defense it was a different story. Johnson inherited a defensive scheme (5-2) he did not like and coordinator, Bill Trout, from Schnellenberger and Olivadotti with whom he had fundamental disagreements. That's why we fell apart against Maryland and lost a bunch of games. There were severe tensions among the staff and I believe Trout resigned before the end of the season. Did not coach the bowl game against UCLA
UCLA prepared for a Johnspn-type "blitzkrieg" but their coaches were very surprised when Miami DLs just sat back. Their coaching staff used the term "blitzkrieg." I remember the quote.
Johnson was able to install his defense the following spring and brought in his own coaches, including Paul Jette as DC. A year or two later he brought in Dave Wannstadt to replace Jette
Maybe Jim Martz gets into this in his second book on UM football.
Yeah, but you were alive in '82 and Jimmy came in '84. Where were you?I’m only 38.
Became a Canes fan in ‘92 because of Wide Right 2 and Sebastian. I was 10 years old.
I didn’t learn much of the history of the ‘80s until years later and still find out new stuff all the time.
I never knew any of that.
I appreciate the input. Thanks.
There’s no doubt that the first thing Leach asked his friend Donald Trump, when he became President, is to confirm that UFO’s are real.I'm beginning to like this Leach idea more and more....

He keeps named of famous pirates on his crib card so he can memorize during the timeouts
Here he is pointing out a contrail to an official.....

First official doesn't believe him so he works on a different official....

All the time arguing play should be stopped because of contrails....

very smart move...or very lucky one.Sam likely recognized Jimmy's skills as HC while understanding the limitations of coaching at Oklahoma State. He correctly projected what Jimmy might accomplish in Miami.
Apparently so. See my longer post.Remember that well and you are dead right. IIRC, his main staff antagonist was Bill Trout, the DC.
Actually the train started to roll out of the station long before Jimmy. Give credit to Saban and Schnellenberger.90% of what's made our program has depended on Sam's projection. JJ loaded the cupboard and left a culture that Erickson rode to his success. Then several years later we depended on a coach from JJ's tree to bring us back to prominence. In some way JJ had a hand in 3 if not 4 of our championships. Sam is that once in a lifetime guy....
Not gonna get into details...but you should hear how I heard it from Butch....Apparently so. See my longer post.
When Jimmy came in, he assembled the staff for a meeting. Olivadotti (whom many thought was the frontrunner to succeed Howard) was openly hostile to Jimmy and reportedly kept dropping a set of keys on the table. Rude and disrespectful.
Respect and remember Olivadotti for his work in bringing a NC to UM, but it was good that he left right after that.
Jimmy did have to put up with a lot of **** that first year. He overcame that. A remarkable guy and he will always be a beloved UM legend.
We were discussing Sam Jankovich so I kept it at that. My belief is Schnelly is the other 10%. They might be the corner stone but not the erection of the building. I won't take anything away from Schnelly that's the Godfather of Canes football.Actually the train started to roll out of the station long before Jimmy. Give credit to Saban and Schnellenberger.
He'll replace the FSU marching band with Jimmy Buffet and the Coral Reefers. Halftimes should be something. His penchant for showing up at job interviews in flip-flops while smelling of rum.

What's your excuse?
