Latest on McIntosh, Norton, and Jackson

Strongly disagree.

Getting a top-rated local DT is nice. But there are far more top-rated DTs around the country.

I'm not sure if you're familiar with Miami as a DT school. We have 2 in the HOF and Wilfork will be the third. And Brown may have had a chance to be the fourth. And we've had others who produced well in the pros, too.

Get the job done.

Wimp womp womp! Kool has to do better than 1 elite DT per class.

Setting our expectations pretty high aren't we. There's less then 10 elite DTs in the country each year and you expect to get 2 of them. I think you're throwing around elite too loosely. We would be sitting pretty good if we get 1 elite each year (5*) combined with someone who is merely good/very good (4*) that didn't have to play as a freshman.

Who's talking about a local DT. Nationwide there are not many DTs that are "truly" elite. While they may not be as hard to project on the next level as a QB or OL, even Butch said, because of there scarcity, they were one of the hardest to recruit.

And yes I well aware of our history. Let me remind you that one of our HOFers came in as a TE Russell Maryland wasn't highly regarded. Cortez Kennedy was a JUCO transfer that fell through the cracks. Even in the 70's, while it was a different world, none of the DTs (Reuben Carter, Don Latimer, Eddie Edwards, Don Smith) were recruited by the big guys. In fact our first All American (Al Carapella) was a DT that also overlooked by the major powers. If anything, Miami made their name with DTs by superior talent evaluation and development.

If you really believe there are plenty of "elite" DTs out there nation wide, you are tossing the label too cheaply.

You sure abut Ruben Carter? Thought he was an elite HS prospect back in the early 70s out of Stranahan HS. The late Lester Williams, out of Carol City, was the #1 high school DT prospect in the nation. And, he lived up to that hype.

Lester Williams was the first highly ranked DT prospect we got that everyone else wanted. But he was the exception. In fact, he was the first national recruit we got and started to turn things around recruiting. Back then Miami was an after thought for elite local talent regardless of position.

And don't forget Jim Burt, who was a big part of that Giant team that won the Sup in 1986.

You're right. Burt was another lightly recruited DT that was turned down by Syracuse who advised him to attend prep school.

Kinda surprised that McIntosh isn't more highly regarded. Most people consider the ND guard a 1st round pick and he abused him at times.

He didn’t make many plays that game. The ends were super active. They were the ones disrupting their play. Outside of a chase down tackle in the 2nd quarter, 80 didn’t do much at all from a playmaking/disruption standpoint.

The talk prior to the NFL draft advisory board grades coming back was that the two DTs and Jackson were leaning towards entering the draft early, but it looks like there could be good news coming for Canes.

Sources tell Canesinsight that junior cornerback Michael Jackson will stay for his senior season.

Although R.J. McIntosh said yesterday that the committee advised him to return to school, he is still heavily considering entering the draft. I’m told that McIntosh received his grade from 6 teams — 4 of which had him in the 3rd-4th round range and 2 that had him getting drafted in the 1st-2nd round range. The committee advises any prospect whose grade does not average out to a first or second round pick to return to school, so that is where McIntosh stands.

However, Kendrick Norton, who most inside the program thought was headed to the league, did not receive a grade that he considered satisfactory — the latest talk is that he will return for his senior senior as well.

So to recap, it still appears that McIntosh leaves early, but Norton and Jackson will come back for their senior years.

Even with the grade that doesn't guarantee he will be drafted there
He needs to come back

Huh?
I remember him being disruptive as ****.
Maybe I'm mistaken and I'm thinking of the VT game?

EDIT: Nevermind, you're right. Just watched it. He got his a$$ kicked a lot in that game actually.

2018 defense looking like
DE-Joe Jackson/ Jon Garvin
DT-Kendrick Norton/John Ford
DT-Gerald Willis/Pat Bethel
DE-DJax/D.J. Johnson
OLB-Zach McCloud/Charles Perry
MLB-Shaq Quarterman/Bradley Jennings
OLB-Mike Pinckney/Darrion Owens
CB-Malek Young/Trajan Bandy
FS-Jaquan Johnson/Derrick Smith
SS-Sheldridk Redwine/Amari Carter
CB-Michael Jackson/Javhante Dean

Returning 9 starters

Hall jumping somebody in that 2 deep and i like bandy to start over young.

No question regarding Hall but also keep an eye on Frierson. We haven't had a safety prospect with his skill set in a long time. Frierson could be the ballhawking centerfielder with range and plus athleticism that we have sorely missed for a very long time. I also like Bandy over Young but we can be sure Young will continue to improve as the level of competition improves.

he went off in the va tech game.

I think Redwine will get replaced....

Wouldn’t surprise me at all. He’s a tough kid and a good player, but he lacks athleticism. That play where Kelly Bryant outran him to the corner encapsulates his limited athletic ability. He maxes out what he has pretty well, but we need a speed/range infusion in the secondary.
Would surprise me tremendously..although what you say is true about his athleticism is true returning senior starters never get replaced, a Redwine had a **** of a year at safety. Crasy thing is people wanted him at corner where his speed would have definitely got exposed
Y’all expect Sheldrick Redwine to be who Shawn Taylor? Well he’s not but he’s as solid as can be at the college level. I’d like to see any safety at the collegiate level make that particular play and win vs Kelly Bryant which is an all lean muscle 6’4 220lb fast F@cking horse of an athlete gottdammit. Redwine ain’t to shabby at 6’2 190lb. We’ll be just fine with him as our starter for his senior year

If McCloud doesn’t improve multifold between now and next year Steed is going to eat his lunch. It’s one thing to look the part. You gotta be able to make football plays though.
Now this I’d like to see. I pray Steed is 100% and stays that way and takes the job from McCloud or should I say McLost cause he seemed lost a lot this year.

I believe Gurvan hall is the kind of safety that can make that tackle on Bryant. I have no problem with Redwine but his limit's physically show up every once in a while. I have watched him come to fill his alley in the run game only to watch a player turn the corner to the outside and get ghost. You can get away with that during most of the regular season but we're trying to win championships. The 4 teams left are the kind of teams were trying to beat. If we were playing Georgia Monday night would you be confident in him bringing down Chubb or Sony in that alley...I know I wouldn't.

Why yall act like these fake assessments are the gospel? We see this **** every year.

NFL teams will have their own individual judgements of who they believe is a 1st round option or not and RJ McIntosh will be on that list for most of them. They don't care about all this before the off season bs.

No NFL teams rank players based on mock drafts and advisory boards
