Know thy enemy: How good is Norvell?

Let's not discredit good coaches just because they're affiliated with other programs, like we typically do on here. Norvell is a quality coach. Also a really good dude.

Winning makes recruiting a lot easier.
However I don't know how high Norvell's ceiling is. (mainly because of his recruiting)

I'm of the opinion that FSU can't be elite unless they tap into South Florida talent. That's always been my thought. 🤷🏻‍♂️ There's just not enough elite talent up there IMO.

As of right now, I don't feel like FSU is making much progress down here. They have to get in line with Ohio State, Georgia, Bama and now Miami to fight for South Florida's elite.

Do they even have a legit South Florida tie on their staff? I've only seen Norvell, Dugans and Haggins at practices/games down here. Then there's Shannon. All nice, personable guys but nobody on their staff scares me from a recruiting standpoint.

Their biggest recruiting tool is the fact that Tallahassee has a 10-to-1 female-to-male ratio.

I really don’t understand why you guys downplay the kid so much on this board. He stunk when he got there… he has improved exponentially year after year. He finished the season playing as good or better than any qb in the country. Based on his trajectory how much better will he be next year? He was 2nd team all acc this year and played lights out to close the year…. And 90% of the offense returns with him

If TVD was getting heisman smoke. You bet Travis will. I get it, he’s a nole…. But I respect good football players and he’s a gamer. Improved year after year throwing the ball and is the best athlete playing qb in the country. He’s the real deal
It’s not downplaying him to say he went from being a horrible QB to an above average one. He’s improved markedly. There’s also a chance that this is, in fact, his ceiling. Just because he’s grown doesn’t mean it’s exponential. I just don’t view him as the Heisman level QB that you do. It’s fine, reasonable people can disagree.

I feel like many forget what a dumpster fire FSU was when he got there and downplay the progress he has made. He is a good coach, not great recruiter, which is good for us.

Until we can beat him i will respect him he seems to develop players better then most and signed some very good portal players last year with a limited NIL budget

IMO, he is a mediocre coach that is riding a QB--who for as much as we have dogged, has turned into--and I hate to say this--a fantastic college QB.

I'm not sure what he'll be capable of once Travis is gone.

And the portal is not sustainable IMO. It's cool to pluck talent here and there, but ultimately, you hope your best players are kids you recruit and develop. Thus

I think your post steps on its logical toes. The fact Travis has become a very good college QB is actually a testament to Norvell's coaching. And before fsu, Norvell had some very good offenses at Memphis..this wasn't an accident...with regards to sustainability of his portal recruiting, one can only work on what you're given and in this case Norvell and staff have mastered the new transfer portal landscape. At the end of the day it is all about talent acquisition regardless of where it comes from and if it's (NCAA) legal.

Alot of the folks who scoff at this are the same type who dismissed coaches who ran offenses which were not "pro-style". One has to get with the times.

agree with this.

he struggled the first two years because the roster was decrepit, and he was left with a hot mess from years of neglect and departmental chaos.
(sound familiar?)

funny how guys look like better coaches once they get better players.

he's a good X's and O's guy, has a good system, and understands well the type of players he needs to execute it. will he win a natty at FSU? maybe not, but it doesn't mean he's Ron Zook either. the guy will regularly have FSU in a position to compete.
Not to mention how they dogged us out at home.

Maybe. Maybe not. Travis has always been remarkably elusive. I'll give them credit for running an offense that is exceedingly modern and well-suited to his gifts because on each play, you got defenders guessing whether Travis is keeping it, handing it off, or passing. And we know that when plays breaks down, his running ability can create plus yards out of what should be negative yards. So, yes, Norvell should be credited for his improvement but you also don't find a lot of QBs as elusive as Travis. I doubt how sustainable their offense is once Travis is gone. That's why I think most folks think Norvell is good (at best) but not championship caliber either. Look around that team-where's the high-end talent?

Re: portal, it has changed, but I don't think that you can create a team and a culture with 1 or 2 year rentals.

Is this sycophantic tribute to FSU over yet, or are there more porsts to come?
OCCC......stepping in with truth

Good enough to beat our asses down this year after all the **** we talked leading into 2022. I hate all things FSU but this loss was just terrible. Not talking **** again until we beat them. Have not earned that right.
