Know thy enemy: How good is Norvell?

IMO, he is a mediocre coach that is riding a QB--who for as much as we have dogged, has turned into--and I hate to say this--a fantastic college QB.

I'm not sure what he'll be capable of once Travis is gone.

And the portal is not sustainable IMO. It's cool to pluck talent here and there, but ultimately, you hope your best players are kids you recruit and develop. Thus far, their best players are largely portal guys.

All jokes aside, both myself & newly the reformed Liberty City El were high on Norvell. It was looking bleak for a minute, but as my boy who’s dialed in to FSU stated, Jimbo & Willie did a raw dog on FSU’s program.

Norvell is corny af, & I believe he’ll struggle to recruit high end HS kids consistently, but guys who enter the portal w/ 1 or 2 yrs b4 making the league, he’ll be able to snatch.

He can scheme & he’s a good coach. Not sure if he’s the type to get FSU back to 90’s prominence or even early 2010’s, but I think he can keep FSU w/in the 9-11 win/yr range.
 
Still can't find somebody to take Travis' spot, who came in under Willie, and we stay cuckin' him for recruits, He's a coRchy coRch.

Well here’s the crux of ur statement, my brother;

U said he’s riding a QB who we dogged. Travis was a joke, each yr he’s improved under Norvell. We clowned their diminutive RB, Ward, & all he’s done is avg. 6.4 ypc.

But I agree, the portal is unsustainable, & I’m hearing some r looking to try to reform it in its current stage; this was an unintended consequence, & who knows if the portal remains in its current format.
 
Norvell is a good football coach but most importantly, he has evolved his approach at FSU. This past season, he was very good about relying on what his players do well and deemphasizing what they don't. As a result, his team has bought-in and played some good football.

Specifically, his QB Jordan Travis is OK, he does some things really well but has some horrific habits. You saw some of them against us, one was picked by Ivey but the others were negated by boneheaded plays by our D or a complete lack of effort.

He put in a wide zone running game and some pretty easy spread concepts. It will be an attractive place for transfers which he'll need because I think he will have to recruit nationally-- he won't have a big NIL budget behind him and he's not a super effective HS recruiter in FL based on what we've heard.
 
What he did this year was very impressive. Jordan Travis was one of the better QBs in the country and Norvell definitely deserves some credit for developing them. Also, Norvell has crushed the portal - Benson, Verse, the WRs, etc. He's not an elite HS recruiter but I think he's proven to at least be a good to great OC.
 
I'm inclined to believe he's a 8-4 9-3 type guy at FSU and he'll field decent teams that drop head scratchers. Even at Memphis he was up and down but offensively he's done some very good things.

Need to see next year, LSU was a good win, playing Clemson close was promising, all their other games were not very impressive IMO the ACC sucked this year.

For all Norvell’s prowess this year (where Florida went 6-6 and Miami went 5-7), the Noles are still well behind the Gators and Canes with the 2023 recruiting class.

Prime Time in Tallahassee after 9-3; he’d have a Top 5 class.

Interesting concept. Had FSU tanked this year, Sanders would be in Tallahassee in 2024 and not Boulder.

Instead, Norvell loves to see a other day and Sanders it out west and more of a recruiting threat to Southern Cal and Oregon than he is Miami.

agree with this.

he struggled the first two years because the roster was decrepit, and he was left with a hot mess from years of neglect and departmental chaos.
(sound familiar?)

funny how guys look like better coaches once they get better players.

he's a good X's and O's guy, has a good system, and understands well the type of players he needs to execute it. will he win a natty at FSU? maybe not, but it doesn't mean he's Ron Zook either. the guy will regularly have FSU in a position to compete.

Nahhhh, He looked like the same QB that played under Willie in Norvell's 1st year. He was playing so bad that Norvell pulled Him for the 3rd string QB when we played them a few years ago. 2nd year was a sliiiiiight improvement, and this year His play took a bigger stride.
 
I honestly think he's done a decent job up there. He recruits the portal extremely well and has an offense that looks entertaining.

I don't think he's top anything coach but I think he's capable of 7-8 wins a year.
 
He knows how to put together a run game.

Top 10 offense and defense right now. If he could recruit he'd be a problem, but he can't.

If they keep stringing together good seasons they'll build trust and their recruiting will improve, but FSU was FSU because of ELITE ELITE talent under Bobby and early Jimbo.

If Mario wins 8 next year and one of those wins is against the Noles, they won't be in serious contention for hardly any of the top players and we on the other had, will be in play for most of them. Especially the SFL dudes.
 
I was gonna weigh on on Norvell but then I remembered we are right in the middle of really important Miami stuff right now

Pretty sure every single fan here weighed in on Norvell during the FSU suck fest that was the season
 
Relies heavily on the portal.... not a very good recruiter otherwise.

Reached his ceiling this past season and caught some breaks.

Definitely saved his job because he was ready to get canned this season so kudos for him.
