Keontra Smith and Chase Smith

Was our team good enough to go 12-0? Nope. And we all know that. But with just a competent coach - not an elite coach - a competent coach who could simply put our best talent on the field, instill some discipline in our Defense, and eliminate all the stupid penalties, this was a 10-2 team. And the two losses to Bama and MSU should have been hard fought, down to the wire losses.

Even with a small 2022 class, a good coach should be able to load up in the portal to combine with the good young talent we already have and rip through the Coastal next season. There is more than enough talent for the next coach to work with.

Just get the right coach.

Somewhat unrelated observation...I’ve wondered if signing King in 2020 cost Manny his job. If there was any year to take a mulligan and start a freshman, that was the year for most programs. Imagine a Tyler Van Dyke with a YEAR’s experience under his belt entering 2021. I dare say we are far more competitive against Alabama and are at worst a 3 loss team.

They are different. And it took our head coach longer to figure that out than some amateurs on a message board.
Keontra was starting day 1. His injury slowed him for sure. His lack of size was also a issue. 41 was probably my favorite recruit in this class. He made some plays vs Duke. Definitely flashed some high end talent. 11 and 17 both played good games yesterday. Steed is a guy this whole fan base should cheer for. And 34..AKA baby soprano. AKA Italian thunder..what else can you say about the kid…his a inspiration..But, again it was Duke. David clutcliff isn’t coming through that door lol

It’s not all about seniority. Flagg played early.

Maybe he’s too focused on guys who “know how to play LB” versus athletes with instincts. Shannon was similar (think Glenn Cook over Daryl Sharpton).
Although I agree. This is vastly similar to that recruiting video that circulated between D'Onofrio and Hurlie Brown where D'Onofrio argued for a recruit because he knew how to play the position. You always go with the superior athlete because you can coach them up, you can't coach athleticism into someone.

Keontra didn’t move to LB until his third year. We’ve been calling for that since he was a high school senior playing LB.

I would never play flagg at this point. you are under recruited, doubted by everyone and instead of having a fire in your belly and chip on your shoulder, you are overweight. that kid needs to go.

I think it's more corches have a soft spot for limited, work hard players.. scrubs/jags who know the play book in class room setting, work extra hard but can't make plays.. it's a weird thing but most corches were that player (they understand the mental side but suck or undersized)..

They have affinity for those players and give them benefit of doubt.. I am sure we have had multiple corches thru years even say that in other words.. Shannon is one of them, these guys are human and have biases, have seen it from optimist to high school to college level especially

The only reason Kinchens and JW got in there was because of a few targeting calls early on. Knighton because of injury. Taylor because they were worried he’d portal out. And Clark was sitting behind Gaynor until he got injured. Arroyo’s another one who has been woefully underutilized.

I’ll give Jess credit for leaving in McCloud. He played solidly if unspectacularly. And I personally feel like Silvera is an unsung hero of the defense. Still not sure why Jess couldn’t help Harvey, Chantz and Roberts to take that next step. Even Taylor struggled with his new weight at times. Very frustrating
Heres Harvey’s Dline class in 2019

Here’s Chantz Williams and Roberts class in 2020

Look at the prospects both are closely ranked with..that’s the type of talent they have. All 3, especially roberts and chantz still have a ways to go in their development. That’s usually what u expect in the trenches

True Everyone knew he was a in the box type of player. He’s best closer to the LOS. I don’t think 4 is a ideal linebacker at this level either tbh..if I’m not mistaken 4 started out in that hybrid LB role at striker. Imo, if the linebacker room looked how it’s supposed to look, (Brooks’s being healthy) 4 would still be at striker and is best suited for that role. Similar to how AU uses Tennison…41 on the other hand is a Telvin smith clone. Could and will play all 3 LB position. These weeks of practice and conditioning and the bowl game will be key for Brooks (any word on him?) 41 and 4..ideally it would be a combination of 11/4/41/17/6 going into next year at the second level

I'm optimistic for next year but there are too many question marks. Harvey, JHH, Roberts, Williams were guys I thought would play at a really high level at Miami. The first two are 3rd years, so you would expect a bigger improvement than we saw. The second two are only 2nd years, but I want to see a LOT more out of them next year.

If those 4 and Taylor can reach their potential, we could have a really good starting DL.

Ehh. I never saw star potential in non of them. Especially this early. I saw guys who definitely play and make plays at this level. Now LT is a whole different deal. He has that type of size and talent to take over games..and low and behold, LT was doing just that in HS and was regarded as such. Harvey, JHH, roberts and Williams weren’t quite that coming in

Future is bright if we have e TAC in the middle with the Smiths outside.
The future isn’t bright. Until we get somebody that can develop these kids, they will regress like everyone else. Our program has approached an massive inflection point.

100% .. I am not an expert but you can see what Chase can do on the football field from far. He is easily in my opinion our best athlete period.. the short space speed, the explosion is elite. The deferred pass vs VT and the TFL on 4th down yesterday we have not seen from anyone.

how about Jakai Clark game vs Senior starter? .. Coach a fool
41-Chase smith’s TFL on 4th down was elite. I haven’t seen that out of any of the Canes LBs the last two years. TAC also flashed, and LB was the canes weakest position group on the team BY FAR! Every time I watch these ILBs play, especially Flagg, I really get upset. Decisions to play 11 and 44 over 41 and TAC is one of many reasons why an immediate change is coaching staff is necessary or the canes will always be mediocre

MANNY IS NOT A FOOTBALL GUY. its clear. he plays senior because he thinks that what you do.
I’m not a football guy. Rode the bench at a suburban school in the midwest. Yet as a casual fan, like most on the board, we can see that guys like Thad, TAC, and Chase Smith should get more burn. Please name Jurich the AD get him and Patke tf out. It really, really isn’t that hard.
