Kehoe calls Romberg and Joaquin and yells at them

Did Julio Cortes play LB in Jimmy Johnson's 3-4? I found a bio saying he finally got his degree at Johnson's urging, in 1990. I remember him playing for the '83 team.

Romberg and Gonzalez were offensive players. Are they criticizing the offensive play or the defense? Nobody's happy with the defense. I'd like to know more about the critiques of the defense.

Kehoe is lucky to have a job. He was fired once, and sue his former employer. You rarely find a former employer reinstating or rehiring a former employee who sues them unless reinstatement is won in the suit.

He didn't play linebacker. He played defensive end because we ran a 5-2 in 1983. To say the game hasn't change is bullshyte. I repeat we ran a 5-2 in 1983. Offenses have changed significantly. They are running spread read option or spread air raid. You're seeing the best athletes on offense so that's why you're getting X-box type games like Baylor/TCU.

There are quite a few defenses defending spread with 3-4 looks.

This is not a defense of what we're running. I don't like it but that's a long discussion. I do agree with one point. Our safety play has been horrible.

I played in that defensive scheme back in high school during the 1970s.
In a nutshell, the DEs in a 5-2 are OLBs...they don't put their hands on the ground.
You have a noseguard, and 2 DTs, with the tackle on wide side of field lined up over OT,
and normally responsible for slanting towards OG looking for dive play.
The tackle on short-side of field tends to be bigger and stronger than his DT teammate,
and he is more responsible for holding the point of attack and not slant.
The Strong-Side safety is responsible for the TE....back in those days he was often referred to
as monster-back or named after their mascot (he was labeled as Trojan in our scheme).
The DE on wide-side of field was to step into towards QB-FB responsibilities when TE he lined
over would down block. SS would handle pitch man to back responsibilities.
Pretty simplistic defense, designed to deal with the various option offenses common in those
days.

"### Though Golden has been classy in not addressing criticism from former players, Romberg said Kehoe indicated to him that it bothers Golden. A friend of the coach said Golden believes some players who criticize him are living in the past, to an extent, and don’t fully grasp that the game has changed."

This REALLY ****es me off. The game has not "changed", what a soft shouldered excuse.

Football today is won by good coaching that develops players and puts them in a position to succeed, same as 30 years ago. Sure, schemes and philosophies on both sides of the ball may change over time but good coaches adapt and keep on winning.

Well the irony of all of this is that the game has in fact changed and the defensive scheme we run had for the most part been outdated…...

Yeah, I played in a 5-2 as well. Shows you how old we are.... The defensive end responsibilities in the 5-2 aren't overly complex. We used it to stop bone and veer offenses. Most of the time they boxed to contain and force the pitch.

I don't post, but read daily. If I have something of substance I'll share. With that said...

To add more to the story of what this awesome coaching staff is about:

After the Cincy game, a gf of mine was working at her hair salon and was taking a break....when she bumps into a man claiming to be a Canes coach. Turns out.... It was uncle jethro. They small talk for a few and apparently he was meeting up with a couple of the coaches for drinks shortly. Anyway, she's not up and obsessed with the Canes like most of us but she's not blinded by the fact that we are simply not coached well. So she asks, "what's going on with the team? When are we going to get more pressure on the QB??"

Jethro's reply? "When they decide to pay me/us more money."

That's your coaching staffs mentality fellas!

Who knows if true since it's second hand he said, she said... but because i want it to be true I'll pretend it is...

LOL Has that POS ever put together a line that can pressure a QB on a Division 1 team? If the Admin decides to pay more money they can actually hire someone that has a ****** clue.

Good God this has to be the worst overall coaching staff in all of football, every level, in history... We need to send them all on a recruiting trip to the heart of Liberia.

I've never met, nor seen, Jethro in person so for all I know she somehow trolled us. The fact she's not up and up on the Canes and these pics she sent resemble the pics I've seen of him, I highly doubt it.

Golden is delusional. Looking for any excuse to take the heat off. I hope former players continue to pile on.

And another thing, you recruit South Florida for 4 years and you cant find a safety that can play the ball in the air? lol why dont you do your job and teach them you fvcker. Stop throwing players under the bus!!!

First they threw the players under the bus ... then the offense ... then the former championship players ... oh and of course now it's our fault as fans!

IT'S THE D-E-F-E-N-S-E!!!

Yep, and on the short-side of field they would assume some pass-coverage in the flats ala Tyriq McCord...it is amazing how simplistic that defensive scheme
and how it rarely was exposed by opposing offenses.

There's a reason the best he could do after USC was Temple.

Get this **** outta here.

A lot of successful coaches, especially those that are progressive offensive minds, seem to like the 3-4, especially in defense against
spread offenses.
Brian Kelly, Paul Johnson, Kevin Sumlin, Harbaugh, Tedford (when he was at Cal), Petrino, Richt, Fisher,etc.....
Pete Carroll and Nick Saban don't seem to have an issue with that scheme either.
So I think it is more of an issue of how, and who, implements that scheme.
Paul Johnson wanted the 3-4 scheme at GT, as he had it at Navy and it worked well for him.
However, the version he had implemented at GT under Al Groh was not to his liking.
Too complicated he claimed.
And Golden hails from that coaching tree.
Something to ponder.

Don't care what he said, but there is way too much sunshine in those photos.

Lol!!! My thoughts exactly! If I had just gotten 34 hung on me by lowly Cincy at home (not even considering the prior thrashings) I don't think I'd be cheesing 2 hours after the game.

Just clean house!

Absolute truth. I was getting a haircut in the next chair over and heard him say it.

I read "the game has changed" differently--moreso that Golden believes that there's more parity and it's harder for us to dominate perhaps especially with the rise of the SEC. That's how the game has changed moreso than anything schematic which is always evolving.

I say that because I do firmly believe that Golden is of the philosophy that winning is hard and grinding your way to a 9-4 season replete with 28-24 wins is a good performance. That's why he's better served at a lesser program where that type of perspective is more in line with the fanbase.

I don't understand the debate! As a coach you are judged by results or the position you coach, the performance of those combined units and your record against the better programs. Nobody cares to ever hear a coach who recruited the players blame the players for the coaches inability to coach and develop players. The results are in and Golden and staff cannot coach! Debate over!

Nice fuchsia shirt, bro. Table for 1 at Twist to celebrate the big Cincy win?
