Josh Pate coming to the game

I don’t have anything against Pate but it’s weird how many people seem personally offended anytime someone says anything remotely negative about the Josh Pates and Pat McAfees of the world.
I think it is weird that people get personally offended by talking heads. Pate gets stuff wrong all the time. I don't understand why people can't disagree with him or criticize his views without accusing him of being a shill. It's lazy.

I really don't get the whole talk in front of a camera and ramble about college football thing.

I mean, I don't mind round tables and discussions about college football. Or taking phone callers and talking about football.

But just long monologues and talking about stories lines and narratives? Not really for me.

I have nothing against him. Just not really my style of sports journalist or commentator or podcaster.

The show ESPN gave McElroy is similar to me. I mean it makes a little more sense since he is a commentator and former player who played at an elite program. But I still find it a tad boring and cringe when a guy just rambles for an hour in front of a camera.

Gonna be honest, this was pretty long....

Someone please humor me, what is an “SEC schill?”

I listen to his show most weeks. He definitely changed his tone as the every man in CFB to favoring the SEC. It happens, it’s where the big $ is.
I would say he has a bias for SEC but it's not ridiculous or unreasonable. He also doesn't let his bias get in the way of reasonable takes and levelheadedness.

Alot of people on here think everybody not named DMoney are shills of some sort.

SEC schill...lol! So is the media really supposed to act like the ACC and Big 12 are not absolute trash? Have you guys watched any football outside Miami on Saturdays? The Big 10 might be the most boring conference to watch in history. Have you guys watched Penn State, Iowa, Northwestern, Rutgers play? For your sake, I hope you haven't.

I hate the SEC, and think most of their teams are overrated, but they are clearly the best conference overall, even with their proper rating. Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Texas, Texas A&M are not the world beaters the media trys to portraying them as, but who are we comparing them to? Lets be real its ok to say taking the top 8 teams from each conference, that the SEC would win against any conference and it wouldn't be close. It's ok to say it is the deepest conference.

It doesn't have anything to do with being "personally offended". Simply commenting a point of view different from people calling the guy a "fraud" or "anti UM". Listening to him pre-season and now that there are some games under the belt he has been consistent in his commentary:

-Pre season .... "Miami LOOKS the part in the trenches and they have solid RB's. The obvious questions are: a). After losing all of their WR production will their current WR's and a pair of portal additions step up? b). Is Carson Beck's arm good to go or will it be a problem? 3). And the big issue that kept Miami out of the CFP in 2024 -- the defense. Will the new DC and a host of portal adds - especially in the secondary - be enough to keep them in games this season? All fair comments that addressed THE REALITY going in.

-After the ND / USF / UF wins: "Miami might have the best team in the country. The OL is legit and just overwhelms opponents. The UF score isn't a clear indicator of how much Miami dominated. The defensive change is incredible. Heatherman has his guys organized and playing fast. And we see that Beck is playing like the 2023 version and there is no doubting the WR talent that has stepped up. Miami is very good on both sides of the ball".

I listen to Pate's show at least twice a week. He is informed, goes to two games each Saturday, and watches a ton of games on TV. He visits practice facilities and talks with head coaches and coordinators. He's not just some dude putting out a podcast with pure opinions. He is a good source of information ... with sources at the conference level and at universities. There are a ton of "podcast" guys out there that don't have a fraction of the credibility or legitimate input that Pate has in his weekly analysis.

There are guys out there that have some fun shows, albeit with a bit of "schtick". On college football realignment the College Football Mafia is interesting ... in some aspects. They are 3 guys who are Big 12 fans, and do have some legit contacts at a couple of Big Ten programs as well as Big 12. They are by no means "national guys" like Pate working from a formal studio. But they have put together some interesting realignment scenarios for the B10 and the SEC, as well as "the best of the rest" for a 3rd conference. It is ENTERTAINMENT however and should be viewed as such.

Historically, he’s been a great. He built his reputation being balanced and giving impartial takes. As his popularity grew, his takes have increasingly grown more partial.

I still like Pate, but see what others see.

He’s suspect. At best. Things change. People change.

“Pate is very fair to Miami”

Yeah, he’s a front-runner when things go well and that’s it. Last year he really pushed the Miami wins because of the refs narrative. His coverage post-VT was anything but fair. You all just get enamored because he makes a comment or two favoring Miami.

Yeah writing all that out definitely proved me wrong

Personally I would say it’s anyone who just spent the last week gassing up UF as a great team but I don’t think that’s what they’re referring too…
