Jordan Miller - 3 star - Commits!!!

One thing I want to do after signing day is put out a review of each of the players with stills showing what they're doing well and things that are cause for concern, or more coaching. I just got around to watching the kids film and if it wasn't in the title, I wouldn't have a clue what his star ranking is/was beforehand. I generally do not read the thread before posting my thoughts so as not to be influenced by the knowledgeable posters on this board.

Strengths:
Quickness- It's quite rare for a player of this size to have a first step quickness on the level of this kid. He isn't just a snap jumper, as I paused his tape several times right after the snap and he was moving in-sync with a player reacting, rather than guessing. He moves like a player that is 260 pounds.

Awareness- It's unusual for a NT to have the awareness of the ball that this player does. I'd want to watch a full game of his to see his bad plays as well, but there were several highlights of him identifying the ball, or a screen in impressive fashion. This is very important in today's game with read-option, inside zone, and jet sweeps.

Size- This isn't a kid that you're going to have to put 25 pounds on him before he can play the position. His frame is pear-shaped, but that's really what you want in a NT. His legs and butt are gigantic and powerful. Anytime a player of his size moves the way he does, he is going to have explosive legs. I wouldn't be surprised if he was a very good basketball at his size.

Skinny- This kid can make himself skinny to split a double-team like the truly elite DT's. To have the balance to turn, explode, take the hits, and still keep his eyes on the ball are outstanding qualities. I saw him explode through a double-team and had to rewind it and watch it again because it was teaching tape.

Motor- You can just see from this kids' on-field play he cares a great deal about the sport. This kid is giving nothing away and pursues like a top-notch DT. He understands angles, but he also made a few plays where he wasn't going to be the hero and he gave full effort nonetheless. I'm big on this particular attribute showing up any time I watch a player, and especially if I'm just looking at highlights. Think about it...the kid is telling you exactly what he thinks is important. These are his highlights (or at least with the help of others) so what he puts out to coaches to see tells us something about the person.

Coaching:
Tells- He gives away what technique he's going to be in at the snap. If he's going to two-gap, he stands straight up immediately and gives away his chest. He really needs to learn to bend his knees the same way at the snap or college OL will explode into him with their punch when they see his tells at the snap. It doesn't matter if you're the strongest guy on earth, if you give away your chest and your momentum is going upright and the OL is bending and exploding into your chest, you are losing leverage.

Arm usage- There were a few snaps where he used one arm to control the blocker and get out to make a tackle and I was excited. "One arm is longer than two!" He uses that locked out arm to control the blocker and get off quickly. But there were other times when he was engaged and couldn't get off the block. That will improve when he learns to use one arm to control the blocker and the other one is free to take his momentum where he wants to go. The good news is Coach Kool is one of the best in the nation at teaching this technique.

Weaknesses
Strength- I don't think it's a weakness of upper-body strength necessarily, but he needs to develop more explosiveness in his upper body. Some of his tackles were of the lunging/tripping variety, and since this was a highlight tape, I imagine they would've included more powerful hits if they had them to show off. He locks out and bull rushes well, but I still think he's underdeveloped in this area.

Stamina- You can see that he tires pretty easily. This isn't a criticism, he's just a kid and he's carrying a lot of mass around. As he gets into a college strength program he'll improve in this area. It needs to improve though to keep the same effort and motor when he's dog tired in the 4th quarter of the Miami heat.

Lateral agility- He's dynamite in a straight line, but when asked to change directions he struggles. Some of that could be due to lack of stamina above, but he definitely needs a strength coach to unlock some of the natural athletic ability from an agility standpoint.

Overall:
I watch these kids when they become Miami targets or commits, and this kid is a stud. I would take him over second to any DT prospect that we are looking at currently due to his size, on-field motor, quickness, and desire. He has a clue how to use his hands, as you saw a one-arm lockout, and you saw an arm-over swim to get free, but there is a lot to learn for this young man. His tools are obvious and if someone had him as a 2-star player after evaluating him, you should stop listening to that person because they are not seeing what they think they are seeing.

He's a legitimate 4-star prospect just because of the physical tools that he has that you can't teach. This is not a sloppy 310-pound kid. This is an athlete that carries his weight very well and will end up at 320 pounds and will be built into a player within two years.

Before anyone asks, Coburn is the one DT we are chasing that I would take over him. Not Briggs. Not Chatfield. Not Carson.

Kinda echos my thoughts above^^^...But in more detail and I'll always defer and enjoy reading your stuff on here.

This is the type of player that separates the people who understand football from the star whores. He is a terrific prospect who I think will be a huge contributer his sophomore season. He doesn't need to put on size /strength (that's where a lot of prospects fail) just improve his conditioning. He probably didn't go to lots of camps and draw attention to himself, so he was underrated. He was a 2 star, then we offered and he became a 3 star. Few more offers roll in over the next few days, he might make the jump to 4 star. Then the bags start dropping from other schools and we risk losing him. So be happy this kid isn't getting more attention because he is a steal.

^^ Based on Miller's HUDL highlights, I came to the exact same assessment. If Coburn is a 4-star, so is this kid. Different athletic abilities, Coburn has more raw athleticism. But you can't overlook Miller's initial acceleration or his heat-seeking ability. For a team that desperately needs interior body mass and force, Miller (and Coburn, hopefully) will become a huge asset under Kul's guidance.

my comparison of the two nose/1techs remaining our board (I also believe Silvera is good, well rounded enough to play at both tackle positions, so he may help out at nose too)

Coburn- I don't see many weaknesses. Looks strong and stout, maybe not a super freak athlete for 325, but definitely above average, not a pig. Stays low, probably because he's only 6'1...I can't imagine there are 3 or 4 better 0 or 1 tech in the country. Looks like he got rid of a little bad weight junior to senior year.

Miller- Needs upper body strength imo, gets a little high at times, more so when he seems to be tired on the play to begin with...or maybe it's standing upright that makes him look tired. Basically needs upper body strength and conditioning, can see that in his tackling, and the occasional getting stood up. More of the pear shape than Coburn who's wider in the shoulders, but this kid's legs and base are huge. Very quick off the ball and in short space, struggles a little laterally, but not a total sloth. I would say he is behind Coburn, but has upside. Raw at this stage, but a lot to like. 3*, top 30 true nose if you had to put a number on it. Needs 2 years to see the field imo, but I like the take at this stage.

Occupies space, blockers= Both
First step= Miller
Strength= Coburn
Balance/hard to move= Coburn slightly, stays lower
Agility/ Lateral Pursuit/overall athlete= Coburn
Motor= slight edge Coburn, but his film was shorter, and prob didn't show plays he took off.
Miller’s upper body strength is just fine IMO. He just needs to get a bit coached up on getting off blockers. I did notice that his hands got stuck on the OLineman on a few occasions but that can be coached. Now your expert assessment on his tackling is a crapshoot but to each his own. He is legit gottdammit!

Ya I would never downgrade a lineman, esp a tackle on tackling form or on being a little sloppy, because they are usually fighting off/thru contact act obviously. I'm just saying, his brute strength both in tackling and moving linemen seems to not quite be on par for his size. And I agree he is a legit player, don't mind him at all, and will welcome him to this class.
Coach Kul just needs to coach him up a bit and show him to use his long arms to his advantage.Strength and conditioning regiment will help him also. I’ve seen his highlights a few times now and I see flashes of greatness in this kid. He will thrive at Da U

Finally decided to get an account on here after a year or so visiting this board.

I spent all night watching Briggs and Miller’s film. I love this kids ability to move the same as Briggs even though he’s 50-60 lbs heavier. I love his upside more so than Briggs. Miller And Nesta are big and can move like they are 260 they will cause a ton of chaos in the middle of the line.

Welcome to posting.

I agree with you. Just imagine what a real S&C program can do for this guy. I can see him playing "slimmed down" at around 310 and really wrecking people.

Yea that’s what has me excited too. When he starts working with Gus and Kul. And it seems like a few people on here don’t see that. You cant teach a big dude to have nimble feet like that. Briggs is good but he seemed a little heavier on his feet despite being smaller

Is this kid a fall-back? Probably, but you can't watch his film and tell me he's another Mayes, Fines, etc. In previous years our "reaches" were guys that everyone and their grandma could see didn't belong on the field at Miami. This kid at least has some tools - great get-off, moves very well for a big guy, and can play NT which is notoriously hard to project. He needs to get stronger and improve his technique, but this is a kid that at least looks like he could contribute real minutes after some time in S&C.

Miller's rating has soared from 77 to 83 in just the last 72 hours. His ranking has also soared, from #179 DT to #95 DT during that same period. SEC and ACC schools are lining up at this door for a crack at him. Miller has decided to cancel his planned OV to Tennessee next weekend. He's coming to visit Miami instead. At 6'-4"/330, Miller is quick, strong and fast. He's turned into a prototypical nose tackle (aka Norton) in a matter of just months. And he loves Miami. Hmm...

Everyone should read HurricaneVision's post before offering their thoughts. Truly insightful stuff, have me really excited for his pickup.

Ivins said a number of sec/ACC schools have inquired about him in the last 2 weeks including Alabama
So far he has netted offers from Miami, Tennessee, South Carolina, Virginia and gat tech within the last 2 weeks

They are called diamonds in the rough because the media doesn’t recognize them or they were on a poor football team and unregonozed or didn’t go to camps to be seen. That doesn’t mean they aren’t talented and can’t be coached up. We made a living off unrecognized talent in the glory days. How many kids go to small schools and now reside in the NFL because they were unregonized.

HurricaneVision has me hyped this Monday morning. I am about to walk into work on 10!

Folden "fell back" into McIntosh and Norton when he failed to land guys like ***** Bryant and Trixie Valentine and Jay-Tard Bostwick. DTs can fall into your lap.

That's a **** of a point. Norton was projected by many to be an OG, and Mac was undersized and underrated. DT, like OL, is really hard to predict.

definitely has the body for it. pics from his twitter during his Virginia visit. a year in our S&C and some targeted nutrition will be good for him
