Who would you put on the field vs a 4-wide of some combination of Toney/Barkate/Moore/Dre/Vaughn/Upshaw/Wingo?

I mean, they essentially fired the position coach. I think they looked and didn't like what they saw as much as all of us.

Skinner, Williams and Schott, all bolt, Lofton set back by injuries and conditioning problems. Not a good look. Worst position group on the team by far. We should be going 4 wide every single snap except 3rd or 4th and short.

One of the reasons I love the way Mario built this team is the focus on trench play.

You always need to be able to run the ball and stop the run. Some games for whatever reason the passing game may not be there…. Maybe because of weather.

Having the ability to grind out a win by running the ball is so underrated.

But I agree with Steve Kim, most games we should be going for explosives and establish points. Then run the ball more in the 3rd and 4th when you’re up 45 -3.

Agreed. Tough this year we’ve got so many options. Lofton had TDs in 3 straight games near the end of the season though he was starting to get a little more involved. It wasn’t much but carving out some TD plays for these guys might be easy work with all the attention the WRs and backs will get

I get it. BUT the point in a top tier offense is to keep a defense on its toes. In a 4 wide more often than not the defense is actually exactly aware of what packages to run to limit damage. Than it becomes a oc against a dc. BUT if you have a effective tight end on the field you have to account for every possibility because the offense is free to attack from any position. Not often a 4 wide turns into effective running plays etc. in a 4 wide you don't really even have to account for a rb more often than not. As a defense you go quarters and attack the slot. That's not what we want to be known for. We always want a defense having to account for our running game and physicality. None of that is in 4 or 5 wide
 
Posters mention TE development lol. Yeah, Lofton didn’t catch 50 passes but he’s prime for a big year, and Gilbert who no one mentions is 6-7 250 and was a freshman last year. He showed some signs We wil be fine at Tight End.

A few thoughts.

First, I agree with Dawson needs to avoid predictability, which was a huge problem for us up through SMU. Multiple personnel types are best when you have the depth and breadth of talent we have. I'm in no way suggesting we eliminate the TE or HB role. They're just not as talented as our WR group IMO, so I would weight the snaps, especially the early snaps, more to 4-wide.

Second, I'm not so sure I agree with you that 4-wide sets take away the RB effectiveness. Chip Kelly made a career on spreads at Oregon then running the ball in space. I think Dawson is creative enough to utilize a deep playbook even with 4-wide formations.

Finally, I very much want to see hybrid concepts. We should line Toney, Pringle or Lofton up at a second RB in a three-WR set, then motion him out to end up with 4 receivers or 3+1 TE, or leave them in tight. Jet sweeps, the occasional trick play. more variations in the screen game -- lets find mismatches given our athletes are superior to their opponents.

Again, based on relative talent, I just want to see a lot more of our WRs on a relative basis than our TEs, with less blocking TE sets this season.

I agree 100%. There's no doubt an complete TE makes your offense less predictable. But the thing is you need a TE that is both a competent blocker and a good receiver. Otherwise the defense knows what that guy is in there for anyway.

That's why IMO you need to go after TE prospects that can do both. I'm hoping Mueller is that guy as he seems to have the raw tools.
