Saying dawson didn’t call the offense different for cam and beck is just so objectively false too. We have eyes, he knew beck had limitations physically and mentally. Thats why you attempt trick plays, to create a spark or big play because your qb can’t make them, we didn’t need that with cam. He had to do different things with toney to make up for beck and the lack of other weapons. We will see the difference this year when he has a more capable qb

This assumption people seem to have that someone like me would ever want to float a narrative is stupid. It's called knowing the game. You're eyes apparently tell you something different than what the game is actually telling you. But again, do you

College offenses rarely call multiple plays at once outside of a 4 minute offense or 2 minute drill or to establish pace. Certain more advanced offenses will, but more often than not especially with headsets now each call is made individually. Your audibles are obviously still plays that were designed by the oc,run game coordinator, & passing coordinator with input from head coach. But it's roughly twenty plays that can be expanded or tightened up based on situational football. A QB makes that decision once he gets to the line and in far more rare situations it comes from a wr of a rb but that's possible as well.
If you think Dawson deserves credit for that because he sends a QB into the game with roughly twenty options than again, do you.

What’s your expectations for Mensah? Better then Beck, less then cam? Depending how the draft shakes out, is there any hope he would run it back in 27?

Being honest as I said I don't have expectations for him yet only because to me he is an unproven commodity. Considering what we actually need from him I think he SHOULD be great for us. But I don't discount the fact I don't know how he plays with pressure and a more scrutinized environment. His time at tulane or Tulsa or wherever that was I'd expect that from him against that level of competition. Last season at Puke their schedule was very watered down. We had I believe two common opponents and he definitely did his job against both and got Ws but not like they were best of squads. I'm aware I'm being harsh and he should get a lil benefit of the doubt. He looked great in camp. But camp is very different from when it matters. Long as the oline comes together early he'll be fine. I just don't agree with this gunslinger outlook. We have a complete team. Football is about managing risks in necessary moments. Throwing the ball all around the field while we have a dominant running game is contradictory and makes little sense. I'd imagine we'll be around 60-40 passing this year and I'm perfect with that.

You always need to be able to run the ball and stop the run. Some games for whatever reason the passing game may not be there…. Maybe because of weather.

Having the ability to grind out a win by running the ball is so underrated.

But I agree with Steve Kim, most games we should be going for explosives and establish points. Then run the ball more in the 3rd and 4th when you’re up 45 -3.

U are 100% correct about Dawson. How tf can he be considered an elite OC when his perimeter run game is virtually nonexistent? Merely installing an air raid passing game, doesn't make u an elite OC; the type of running game u choose to deploy matters just as much, if not more. He's also not an elite OC because he lacks the ability to sequence as a play caller. Being elite requires there's a logical flow with how plays are called; each play should set up a future one. Too often it feels like Dawson is calling plays in a disjointed & arbitrary manner; as if he is picking them out of a hat. Ultimately, this team is winning in spite of Dawson, & not because of him.

The reason why they continue to say this, despite what the evidence & data shows, is because they learned the game from playing Madden, & wish the game becomes a glorified 7v7 drill. Smh. They simply lack the understanding of what playing complementary, championship caliber football entails. Someone needs to let these m'fers know that gunslingers rarely win championships in college; for every Burrow, Newton, & Watson, there's 20 other QBs who won a NC playing within the structure of a offense, & they view as being a game manager.

If Dawson's rushing offense was better, this team would've easily won the NC last yr. The defense, o-line, & QB(after Louisville), were all playing championship caliber football. This team's EPA was 10th in passing & 26th in rushing, & yet we still have people on this forum saying passing is why we didn't win it; please make it make sense. Smh. This team had the 4th worst rushing offense in the entire playoff field, & 1 of those teams was from the G5, who had no business even being in the tournament. Just think about how much better the passing game, & defense would've been if the rushing attack was at least top 20?

Dawson is responsible for being aggressive in 2024 leading to the #1 offense *unless you say it had nothing to do with him and all credit goes to Cam Ward.

It’s a simple football conversation relax lol. It’s common knowledge playcallers have audibles built into their offense. Cam deserves credit for recognizing stuff pre snap and getting into something better but he is changing into something that it built into dawson offense. I don’t even understand how that would be debatable, literally every qb ever does that. The qb isn’t just pulling audibles out of the air, it’s a collaborative effort


Cool thats basically my point, if cam is audibling into something within dawson scheme them how has that now turned into people downplaying or taking credit away from the coordinators impact on having the best offense in the country?

Idk why you think this has anything to do with your character or anything. I think anyone can see clear differences in how the offense was called for beck vs cam, like again idk how that is debatable

lol he played hurt all last year while being asked to wham block (basically running into a D-end or DT at full speed. He was top 7 for TEs in the ACC last year. He just didn’t get the targets. Now that he’s healthy and has plenty of guys that command attention he will get plenty of opportunities.

First, I agree with Dawson needs to avoid predictability, which was a huge problem for us up through SMU. Multiple personnel types are best when you have the depth and breadth of talent we have. I'm in no way suggesting we eliminate the TE or HB role. They're just not as talented as our WR group IMO, so I would weight the snaps, especially the early snaps, more to 4-wide.

Second, I'm not so sure I agree with you that 4-wide sets take away the RB effectiveness. Chip Kelly made a career on spreads at Oregon then running the ball in space. I think Dawson is creative enough to utilize a deep playbook even with 4-wide formations.

Finally, I very much want to see hybrid concepts. We should line Toney, Pringle or Lofton up at a second RB in a three-WR set, then motion him out to end up with 4 receivers or 3+1 TE, or leave them in tight. Jet sweeps, the occasional trick play. more variations in the screen game -- lets find mismatches given our athletes are superior to their opponents.

Again, based on relative talent, I just want to see a lot more of our WRs on a relative basis than our TEs, with less blocking TE sets this season.

I agree with you on the running game. Four wide sets spread out, create more room in the box for the running back. I mean, that’s the whole basis of a power spread run game. So I definitely think we’ll see more of that this year. But I’m not down on the tight end position like some are, Lofton was playing good towards the end of the season when he was healthy until he got hurt again and we got some big athletic bodies in that room. So I think we’ll be fine there.
