I'm no jingo expert, but "been a Cane" is stating that the present reality is so solid it's as if it's always been the case. It's not a comment on the actual length of time.

Sort of like saying "you've been a good poster for a minute" doesn't mean you've only been a good poster for 60 seconds.

You underestimate the redneckishness of them bamer folk. Iron bowl is not only a bucket list sporting event, it makes their actual life bucket list.
