2026 James "JJ" Johnson 4* DT from Northwestern via Ft Myers Flips to Texas From UGA

You know I was convinced that DT is one of the most important positions on defense. But reading what you have posted has me leaning to your thinking. You’re making solid points
A lot of what defense is is just buy in.

If all 11 guys know what to do and communicate really well and tackle, you give yourself a good shot. Once you're at that level then strong faster bigger becomes a thing.

Football is still won on three things;
Blocking
Tackling
Turnovers

You do those three things better then the other team every game, it's an almost guarantee. It minimizes the impact of a DT is the tema.just tackles well. He doesn't have to rip open the OL or double. Just control a gap, or blocker and make some tackles and don't miss them when they come and they're pretty good DTs.

It’s safe to say that all points about what position is the most important are correct.
The facts are:

1: Championship teams are strong at all positions
2: a good coach will expose a weakness and continue to exploit it as long as you allow it.
3: Miami has been weak at too many positions besides running back.

4: The draft has proven where we’ve been weak at where teams have gashed us and hence the reason why everyone is correct.

Fran Brown won 10 games in the ACC in Year 1?

How'd he do that? Thought it took years to get your guys?

(Doesn't change the fact that we did not win the ACC)
But he had the QB homeboy. Crazy how having a QB that allows you to do everything you want to on offense can effect a team.

Can we lock this thread…the one year Northwestern Bull will be a dawg….yea yea, lets move on. Next recuit.

It stays open. It isn’t embarrassing crying about dumb stuff like “he doesn’t want to compete.” The thread has evolved into a genuine discussion about the value of the DT position. If you don’t like it go.

Well he had the nations top statistical passer via portal. If you are arguing TVD is McCord's equal...?

Miami was also ravaged by injuries in Mario's first year, 2nd year wasn't great either, but first year it was unworkeable with so many injuries.

I remember looking at true freshman Jacurri Brown with his heels touching the goaline, with walk on RB Lucious Stanley beside him in the backfied playing rival FSU in that 2022 season.

DT and corner are the two most important positions on defense in my eyes.

If you had a defense with B quality players at every spot but you had to hide a D- position group somewhere in there... DT and Corner are off the table. You would have a better time covering the deficiency if it were at other positions.

On top of that, DT is probably the position with the least amount of high grade players available that fit the size, athleticism, effort, work ether etc blueprint. That makes the good ones even more valuable.

Facts
I think the second part of Warrior’s point is it, but it leads me to the opposite conclusion. since there are fewer high grade players at DT, the distribution of average play is pretty tight. so while on the extremes (which are hard to find) you can get wide ranges up to a vince wilfork, the 25th-75th percentiles of DT are probably getting you pretty similar results.

If you have the 25th percentiles of safeties, it’s 7 to the other guys.

my 2 cents: there are a lot of different ways to win, so it’s most important to have A+ talent in as many places as possible and at least be competent where you don’t.

Not at all. I did not claim TVD was the top QB in the country, then watch him in 2022, and then think we should not replace him for 2023 vs. being held hostage. Also had a terrible coaching staff the first year, and didn't use the portal enough. Seems like wise moves by Brown.

Brown doing something we thought was impossible aside, we still haven't won the ACC which was suppose to be easy for any competent coach at Miami - including while having a stellar offense, but misreading the defensive room during the last offseason.

But let's get back to @Memnon turning the tables on everyone with their own arguments. I am enjoying it.

Maybe we can take a look at the top paid positions in the NFL which has correlation to most important pieces on a team…

1. QB
2. Edge
3. WR
4. OT
5. CB
6. DT
7. TE

Rest of list is RB, S, and LB

The college game is different, and I believe there’s more value to dominant LOS play as the talent level across a conference varies. It is much easier to impose yourself on the other team if they can’t handle the LOS at this level. Still, the above list holds true in most cases on where you want to allocate resources in today’s NIL.

War Daddy DT’s are a luxury. I was going to use the example of putting 2009 Ndamukong Suh on last years team..but he’s an outlier heisman talent at DT. Would a guy like Christian Wilkins on last years squad made the difference in us getting to playoffs?

To @Memnon point it’s obvious the total D is what’s important, at the very least having very good to elite players at the Edge/CB position and DT/LB rounding the team out..still needs to be talent there obviously..he’s not saying you can put JAGs out there..

Syracuse's offense was no slouch, i for one was not surprised they waxed our sorry *** secondary

I concur. Not surprised at all. The 21-0 choke was abysmal, having very few answers on D after USF was worse.

I would have been OK if at some point we said, well 1, 7 and 25 aren’t getting it done again, let’s try @Alex_Dynamix out there for a series because insanity isn’t cutting it…
