Jahair Jones commits

Brooklyn (NY) ASA College OL Jahair Jones called up Hurricane coach Al Golden early this afternoon.

Golden picked up the phone and Jones blurted "I'm coming to the U."

"Coach Golden, he was sitting right next to James Coley - they were excited, said `Congratulations,'" Jones said. "I committed to both of them."

Jones says the plan is to sign his Cane papers on Wednesday.

"They said after I sign they'll send me the workout regimen," Jones said.

While he's a UM commitment, he still says he hasn't entirely ruled out Virginia Tech.

"It's 80-20 (Miami)," he says.

Jones says he doesn't see that 20 percent really inching up, though.

He says he picked Miami "because it just felt like it was a better opportunity for me as a player and I saw the people around there (on the official visit), looked at the whole picture. And I want to play against Florida State, love that rivalry."

His expectations coming in early?

"To work hard, learn the system, lift and get stronger," Jones said.

He expects to start out at left tackle.

"The coaches said I can compete for a starting position," Jones said. "I'm going to work my butt of for when the season starts and I plan to start every game."

Jones arrives as a true sophomore - he was qualified out of high school and played one year at ASA College to get more interest. His team finished this season with a 6-2 record.

ASA College head coach Dennis Orlando said of Jones that "he was real comfortable down there at Miami - he's going to fit in there really well. He's a hard worker, is not a `me' guy, is a team guy. I think by him getting here in the spring he'll have a strong chance to contribute in the fall.

"He has the talent to be exceptional in run and pass blocking. He's raw right now because this is only his third year playing football. So he's a raw prospect, but with the right coaching he'll be really good."

Good stuff. I think someone mentioned he's a 4/3 kid. If so, getting a JC kid to come in January for a position of need yet still has 4 years to play 3 is ideal.

This is a great pick up he is a basketball guy similar to Merrick although I believe Merrick has played slightly more football. This is going to take time as I do not believe he is ready to face some of the elite pass rushers in the ACC right away but into he will be a monster...

The Northeastern Hurricanes......might as well relocate and join a new conference. Why even act like UM represents the city of Miami.

I never mind seeing us get OLine prospects like this out of state.

The state of FL is not known for producing quality OLinemen on the regular(a few elite ones every year but not too many)

More of a problem when you take skilled position guys out of state over instate kids.

Great get regardless of where he is from as he is ready now being a JUCO guy. With that being said, cut bait with some of these JAG OL and close some top talent players on D

Need to drop Loftus, don't think we drop Mahoney(remember he payed for Milo's flight to Miami) though

Seems solid enough. At this point I'm just hoping we close on solid kids and keep at least one of Scarlett or Williams. Just pray Al does well enough to leave the next guy something to work with.
