In my opinion, it may be the smartest move for a lot of these young QBs. Go where you’re most likely to start. The only way to improve is to get reps. You can’t do that sitting behind someone buried in a depth chart.

Won the starting job as a true freshman.
Started first two games.
Aggravated an old injury, missed the next 9 games (team went 2-7).
Started the regular season finale for a team that went 3-9.
Not ideal, but he was decent for ASU as a true freshman pre-injury.
I'm not saying Miami should take him (we shouldn't), but he was not "beyond awful" with the Sun Devils.
Those are bad numbers to me. I watched that Arizona game and he was atrocious.
10-22 for 82 yards, a 45% comp pct, 2 INTs, 2 sacks against him. QBR of 13.8

That's why portal is and will continue to be the correct play at QB unless one of the developmental HS prospects being developed shows out and you think he's the guy the following year...

IM ALLLLLLL ABOUT THE POTAL AT QB...NOT SURE WHY ALOT IN THIS FANBASE IS AGAINST.
WE ARE A QB DESTINATION FOR THE PORTAL.
Deriq King, Cam Ward, Carson Beck...Im in there every year if u ask me...keeping a mil for that every szn....and taking 4 star or high upside kids that would come in at a reasonable price. Im not paying 5 star qbs millions to sit two years.

I wouldn't be opposed to go for a 5star absolute stud that is the #1 prospect that you 100% expect to start year 1 - like Underwood this year. That has the main benefit of year 2+3 having extreme stability and a known commodity at QB. BUT it's more risky without question, and I'd bet isn't even cheaper by much if at all...
For example guys you can possibly lure in portal this year (due to unlikely being viewed as top 2-3 round pick or just wanting to actually compete for championship - or both):

Yep - that was haled as a big time qb class but lots of flops. Conversely, that 2021 class was pretty **** good
