Mario built Oregons OLine well while he was there, so Lanning had to maintain rather than fully rebuild. He had a high floor and good overall foundation to work with which goes a long way.I think this topic spiraled out of control b/c we have an affinity to dismiss other programs like UGA & UO who r pumping out OL to the NFL. The goal is to get the NFL, champ, not just play good college football.
Our OL under Mario & Mirabal has improved tremendously, but it’s far from elite; & as of right now, we haven’t produced a great OL draft pedigree. This notion of “why would a kid choose UGA or UO over Miami when we have Mario & Alex is a moot point; why? B/c
1. UGA & UO has produced exponentially more OL draft picks since 2023 than Miami.
2. Key OL stats for these programs have been better than us since 2022:
Eg.
•Sacks Allowed Avg. Ranking (UO-14th, UGA-23rd, UM-61st)
•Rushing Avg. Rankings (UO-38th, UGA-47th, UM-57th)
•TFLs Allowed Avg. Rankings (UO-12th, UGA-19th, UM-37th)
Now with that being said, we have phenomenal OL teachers, but to act as if they’re the only ones or that a kid would be foolish for choosing those aforementioned programs over us is the purest form of Kool Aid drinkers.
If we’re talking about a top tier OLmen choosing FSU, UF, Colorado, Mich St, Oregon St, over us, then I 10000% agree, but UGA or UO based upon who they’ve produced at the next level under the current HC? Nah.
You recruit to the end, & hopefully he chooses us b/c of the potential domino effect; however, it’s not baffling or “dumb” if this kid were to chose one of those two aforementioned programs.
Smart had been at UGA for like 7 and won championships yrs by the time 2022 rolled around.
