ITT We Discuss Possible Golden Replacements

On the negative side : HC at school when horrible NCAA scandal occurred. Not great game day coach. Old.

On the Positive side : Recrited more NFL Hall of Fame type than most great coaches ever have 1st round draft picks. Oh, and just about an entire draft of 1st round picks.

He was a horrible game day coach. Beamer owned him. He wouldn't have won a national championship.

he beat an undefeated ucla team then went 11-1. he was 51-20, what are you talking about? i thought coker was a bad oc but lets be real butch only got better.
he also put unc guys into nfl consistently.

I would say its pretty certain you can rule him out.

1. We are on NCAA probation. Butch left his last gig under a cloud of scandal. There is NO WAY Donna is going to go for that.

2. He's 62 years old.

3. He flat out lied to the school and everyone at the program before he bolted last time which burned a LOT of bridges at UM.

Seriously, I think its time to drop the Butch fantasy.

Yeah his age is a negative, that would be my only hold up.

As for his gameday coaching, I was a huge, huge basher of davis in this dept back in the day. But at this point, who cares. We've sucked for over a decade now. We know that Davis will put a team full of *** kicking savages on the field. I'll take that if the tradeoff is that he calls a dumb timeout here and there. I'm 35, I'd like to see the canes beat fsu again before I grow old and die.

I know it won't happen but it would be a BRILLIANT choice. Im with the OP.....wish ego's and the NCAA stuff were non factors but the fact is that people believe Butch had something to do with the mess in Chapel Hill. You and I know he's been exonerated but he's basically been exiled from football because of that cloud.

He'd have a lot to prove and would get a second chance to erase probably what must be one of his biggest regrets.

Thread is a total waste of time.
He's not coming in any way shape or form.
I wish folks would drop it already.

LOL @ Cristobal having burned bridges. Says who? A bunch of fans? Guy didnt even have a real position on the staff, just a made up one so he could have a fall back spot as a local recruiter. Its obvious there are many in the AD and at the high levels here who like Cristobal very much. Just because you all assume he burned bridges doesnt mean it was so. For all you know he was very up front with AG and the school that he was looking for another gig and would probably move on if it happened. I highly doubt he was going to stay in a made up position with no real responsibility here.

This job pays less than Wake Forest. Get that through your heads. The HC at RUTGERS laughed in our face last time. They will offer some mid level guys like the guy at NIU or Fresno State, and Cristobal will be the "go to" if the others dont impress or arent intersted. Just like Coker and Randy were the "go to". That's how UM rolls. Mark it down and remember who told you.

Strong, Dantonio, Franklin...keep dreaming.

Miami will never touch Butch again. Petrino can't recruit. Chudzinski seems to have a lot of Mike Martz to him.

I would start with Mark Stoops. I would call McElwain, Curtis Johnson, Cristobal for interviews from the college ranks. I know this won't play well after that stupid video, but I would also give Willie Taggart a LOOOONG look.

WOAT list right here, easily. May god help us if anyone in the AD thinks like you do.

The guys on that list fit the profile of the guys who have been successful here before. They have head coaching experience, have worked with impressive mentors, and in the case of all but Stoops, have had success as the head guy before. They can all recruit.

We can't afford Strong, Franklin or Dantonio. Rather, we have shown no history at all of ever paying up the money those guys currently command.

Personally, I don't want another first time head coach...we went down that road and got burned by Coker and Randy...so that rules out guys like Chad Morris, Pat Narduzzi and Kirby Smart.

I assume you don't like the lack of big names. Quick, go find me all the big name coaches Miami has hired in the history of the program. I'll hang up and listen.

Jesus Christ this has so much fail in it I cannot even begin.....but I'll try.

Howard Schnellenberger was the OC for the UNDEFEATED 1972 Dolphins. He was an NFL coach for OVER A DECADE before getting the Miami gig, including several years as an OC and one year as a HC. Before the NFL, the GUY WAS AN OC FOR BEAR BRYANT. The man had an INCREDIBLE resume. Easily the best resume of any coach we have hired.

Jimmy Johnson was also a long time assistant coach, but at MAJOR college programs. He was a DL coach at OU under Chuck Fairbanks, and then the DC at Arkansas under Frank Broyles (the man who the "top assistant in the NCAA" award is named after). He then had several years as a HC at OSU before being named HC at Miami. And despite that super resume was considered "an unknown" hire. He also featured an innovative, never been done before defensive system that was significantly ahead if it's time.

Dennis had been an innovative mind at a million stops before moving up from Idaho to Wyoming to a BCS conference school in Wazzou, showing turnarounds at all programs with a creative spread offense. His resume is clearly weaker than the others, and as we all know he did a nice job with JJs cats, and then the program fell apart. That said, his innovations led to years of dominance that brought us two titles.

Butch Davis had been an assistant in HS or college for two decades before getting the Miami gig. He came up under one of the greatest college/NFL coaches in history, was that man's recruiting coordinator, and DL coach. He was a part of the staff that INVENTED A DEFENSE. He then was an NFL DL coach, and NFL DC where he WON A SUPER BOWL AS A DC.

So now please, tell us what kind of coach Miami hires?

Cristobal, Johnson, Taggert? Those guys are JOKES compared to the coaches who built us. Their resume's aren't even comparable. Al Golden's wasn't either, but we ignored it b/c he was "an elite recruiter" and "did some great things at a bad school".....Learn from the past. There are good coaches out there who are in the same mold as JJ/Howard/Butch. But you have to find them and pay them. Miami has been unwilling to do either.

Can you let me ******* dream man? Come on. I know we're getting mario cristobal or ted roof, but until that happens just let me have a couple weeks of fantasy time.

he also put unc guys into nfl consistently.

What happened the week before he beat that undefeated UCLA team? Oh yeah, he lost to Syracuse 66-13. He also lost to East Carolina--twice. Oh, and he was 1-5 against Beamer. Pretty sure his record vs. FSU was about the same. Bad game day coach.

Another coaching hire fail and it might be the end of Miami forever. A sure thing like Olive Garden or Butch will certainly save Miami; but we all know the barriers.

I think a lot of us thought at one point that we needed just a competent coach to win it all here. I think it's becoming clear that you need a great coach to win consistently anywhere. Period

LOL, true. "Botch Davis" who was having banners flowing over the OB demanding he be fired, now he's the Messiah that will save us. Same cats in here cheering Golden possibly leaving, would have been trashing Butch non stop and running him out of town in 98-99.

I know there's been a lot of talk on the board (and rightfully so) that Miami, if forced to replace Golden, would look for a cheaper alternative. Seems to make sense to me as UM has never looked to break the bank. I was curious how Golden' salary matced up to other coaches and I remember a while back someone brought up the USA today article on NCAAF coach salaries. The one constant is that all of the hgher paid coaches belong to state schools...no rocket science really needed.

I saw that USA today also ran something for NCAAB coaches and once again, most of the highest paid coaches were from state schools. The highest paid though? Coach K at Duke with a salary of over $7 million/yr. And before anyone's head explodes...I would never even try to place Golden in his galaxy...but if anything it made me ask...why CAN'T UM pay a higher salary to the football staff? Does the administration realize how the football landscape has changed? I'm sure the answer is yes, but can anyone offer any insight as to why there's such a disconnect here? Again, I understand UM prides itself on its academics and rightfully so. And these people are too intelligent NOT to see where we are heading (if we haven't already stopped, dropped, and opened up shop)...which is mediocre USA, population 300 mil.

I don't know the statistics, but I am willing to bet that the UM footbal program has had about as high a return on investment as any football program in the country. 5 national championships and countless bowl victories. I'm actually perplexed that the administration wouldn't be willing to invest, say, another 2 million guaranteed plus bonuses for a top HC. Golden makes a little over 2 million plus some minor bonuses...so should UM really not be willing to go after someone they covet and offer $4 million plus bonuses? If its the wrong hire, OK...chances are you would end up firing someone 3 yrs down the line...so you're essentially 'out' $6 million. And then, what if it works out? I mean my god its essentially a very basic costs vs benefits analysis that should always point toward paying a top HC at least what would amount to a top 10 salary. The fact a private instutution like Duke pays someone $7 million proves a private school can afford it. And yes I am aware that Coach K is his own brand in addition to the Duke basketball brand, but I wouldn't suggest paying anyone that (he makes more than Saban)...on the other hand, paying a good coach that you WANT shouldn't cause you to hesitate...the return you coud get for hiring the right guy is imperative and absolutely realistic.

If Goldn stays, there's still a ton of questions...no doubt. But if he leaves? This really could be it...I hate to read like a doomsday prophet but 4 coaches in 10 yrs? This shouldn't be a ******* stepping stone position...this is a dangerous cycle and would only add to the sentment held by some in the SoFla HS football community.

James coley was named the next head coach at the U? assuming that Golden and Dorito leave for Penn State. I think he could save a fair amount of our recruiting class.
