Is this what Miami football is supposed to look like?

While I talked to Cam from StateOfTheU during the USF game, something he said really struck me.

"This is what a Miami team is SUPPOSED TO LOOK LIKE"

In all honesty I just looked at him and went "Dude I have no clue what a Miami team is supposed to look like"

As a young Miami fan (19), I've only known the Canes as a "has-been" program. And while I absolutely love the players I grew up with (Duke, Kaaya, Perryman, Rambo), I can admit that it's a bit of a drop from your Ed Reed's, Sean Taylor's, and Michael Irvin's of the world. Yes I've watched highlights, yes I've heard the stories about the Orange Bowl, yes I've heard my mother's stories from when she was at the U during the late 80's run.

But I can't comprehend that given all I've ever experienced being November collapses and beatdowns by rivals.

And while I'm excited about this team (I have been since spring practices), I realize that my perception is based off of 19 years of disappointment. So I pose the question to y'all who've seen why the U holds weight.

Is this what a Miami team is supposed to look like?
in the summer ot 2000, i met a woman banker who was as beautiful as sofia luaren. i convinced her to travel with me o seattle for our first game against U-Dub. Tuiasosopo had our number that day, santana muffed a punt, and we lost the first game of the year. the intelligentsia at the time didn't fly banners, but if i'm remembering this correctly they wanted to hold a protest at the hecht and hang Coker from the rafters. or at least in effigy.

Fan since birth but started following seriously around 2004 (18 yo) …. This is the first “no holes” Miami team I’ve ever seen.

We’re not taking the Porsche out for a spin just yet but we’re at least kicking the tires. My body is ready.

Brother I’m 31 and have not witnessed what a Miami team is suppose to look like… that’s sad. 2017 was the closest imo on the defensive side of the ball, we looked athletic on the back end. INT’s and making plays on the ball. DL was very fast and could pin their ears back to get after the QB (edge and DT) but they weren’t super stout at bowing up and stoping the run like our current DE duo. We’ve been lacking at LB, although Shaq/Pinck were great in the scheme, they weren’t physical freaks. As far as offense with Mario it’s what it’s suppose to look like up front 100%. Impose your will on teams. But we’ve still been missing the freaks like Andre and the playmaker, and also the breakaway speed like moss. Mario keeps it up, he’s going to keep getting talented WR’s and we’ll eventually get sure fire NFL franchise WR type talent

It's the closest I've seen since 2017. The players you listed were all good and up to the standard, but too many on their teams were not

2017 was the closest I've seen in a while. There was enough talent on that team to make a run....Malik tried his best but just couldn't make enough throws to his open WRs downfield. Wish we could have seen what that team could have looked like if BK had returned.

I personally don't think this team is close to what I grew up watching. But it can be a good team that handles the rest of this schedule.

Fist canes game was in 89, I was 9. This team has some similarities and some differences. So does college football now though as a whole. Enjoy it for what it is. Promising good start with great opportunity over the next two games. Our lines look to be elite in 2025 so that will always give us confidence that we can win. I’ll say this, I have been much calmer for all three games and deep down it’s a quiet confidence in what Mario has built and is building. Go Canes and let’s play another sound game on Saturday.

For those that are comparing this team to the 2001 Miami Hurricanes, please stop.

I've pretty much accepted that a situation like the '01 Canes was so unique and so unusual is something college football, at large, will never see again.

Half the **** team made a roster, with multiple pro-bowlers and HOF's. Other than the mid '00 USC teams, I really haven't seen a team come close to that. And that was with Larry Coker as the head coach.

We might have teams like '83, '87, '92 teams, but don't count on having a team that would go 8-4 if the offense didn't score a point. Think about that. The offense could literally kneel the ball every single time, and the 2001 Miami Hurricanes would've gone 8-4. That's ridiculous. I will agree that the offensive line is as good of an offensive line I've seen us have in twenty years.

Recruiting, development, and coaching is leaps and bounds better then anything we’ve had since 2005/6.

We we start hearing things like “he’s a Miami guy” and “he’s a sideline to sideline backer” thats when you’ll kno.

We’re missing some of that speed that made us dangerous. We had backers that could run with receivers.

And we’re missing some of those guys who played with a boulder sized chip on their shoulder.

Slowly but surely it’s getting there. Gotta keep recruiting and keep getting difference makers. We need more Bains and Mauigoas

Not sure whether we are back to how it was during the hey days.... at least in terms of expectations...

I started following the Canes when I attended the U in the late eighties.. any loss was like a death in the family. .. was depressed for days.

However, Coker, Randy, and the rest of the clown hires cured me of all that....

The WR corp is performing better than they have any right to. Very young, but with guys like Toney, very surprising.

Butch was HC then.

There were so many “almosts” in that game.
Dorsey hit Moss at the back of the EZ in what would have got us within a score, but Moss’s foot was just barely out of bounds.
We got the ball again and scored after a pick, by came up short at the end.

First game jitters, not really any of the coaching staffs fault. Only Dorsey’s 6th game IIRC and a Sophomore. He didn’t see a couple wide open receivers in the game. Just a bad luck game.

Well...

Since no one else had the balls to ask, I will.

At the end of the game, did she convince you to make a 'deposit'? ;)

Yes this is what its supposed to look like. During our last run of dominance in the early 2000s, we dominated the trenches much like this team is doing.

As a very long time fan, started watching Canes (then we called them UM) in the late 1970's, I have seen the best of Miami football and unfortunately the worst of it. We have had some teams that were exceptional on offense, or exceptional on defense, but rarely a team that was both. This team is exceptional on both so far. But it is a long season. Injuries happen. We are loaded depth wise at every position but QB. This team can go far but nothing can happen that would put Beck out for a game or more. As long as he stays healthy we have a chance to win the ACC, make a run in the playoffs or even win it all but he has to be protected. This is one of the best Miami teams I have seen in my lifetime on both sides of the ball. But everything depends on Carson being healthy.
