Is this what Miami football is supposed to look like?

While I talked to Cam from StateOfTheU during the USF game, something he said really struck me.

"This is what a Miami team is SUPPOSED TO LOOK LIKE"

In all honesty I just looked at him and went "Dude I have no clue what a Miami team is supposed to look like"

As a young Miami fan (19), I've only known the Canes as a "has-been" program. And while I absolutely love the players I grew up with (Duke, Kaaya, Perryman, Rambo), I can admit that it's a bit of a drop from your Ed Reed's, Sean Taylor's, and Michael Irvin's of the world. Yes I've watched highlights, yes I've heard the stories about the Orange Bowl, yes I've heard my mother's stories from when she was at the U during the late 80's run.

But I can't comprehend that given all I've ever experienced being November collapses and beatdowns by rivals.

And while I'm excited about this team (I have been since spring practices), I realize that my perception is based off of 19 years of disappointment. So I pose the question to y'all who've seen why the U holds weight.

Is this what a Miami team is supposed to look like?

Whenever we can have 9+ penalties and wipe the floor with OSU/UGA/OR…you’ll see what we’re supposed to look like.

I'd say we haven't really ever been built quite like this. Mario's version is the best we've probably ever been on the OL except maybe 2001. We are also the most fyzical we've ever been from top to bottom. We just lack in some ways some skill position guys like Jeremiah....not sure we have any Pro Bowl type skill players.
I think this OL will be better than '01 by the end of the year. Tackles are a wash - McKinnie levels above Bell, but CiCi levels above Joaquin (sorry, Joaquin). Romberg over Brockermeyer. Cooper & Samson vs Bibla & Sherko maybe a wash right now, or slight nod to '01, but this year's Guards have much higher ceiling which I expect them to realize.

Until we got pro bowlers replacing all pros it doesn’t look like it’s supposed to look, but it looks a lot **** better than it has for your entire life.

I would argue that we didn't know we had multiple all pros and pro bowlers at the time in 2000. We knew we had 1st rounders and top 10 picks though. We certainly know we have 1st rounders right now. Barring injury we know we have 3 1st rounders and at least 1 top 10 pick between Bain, Beck, and Mauigoa. Flanked by a talented young secondary that should produce a 1st rounder in the future based on size skill and talent. Top 3 round talents on the O-line and D-line with a couple potential 1st rounders. We also a have a chance to compete for a Natty this year.

This. It's not perfect (yet), but our year over year talent is continuing to build.

My biggest gripe against former coaches was their inability to recruit strong classes every year. I thought we wavered last year, but Mario continues to march forward which is impressive.

From what TrumpyCane has seen it seems the opposite so far

Agree, best Miami team in over 20 years. But this is a "new" team. Lot's of transfers and true freshman playing meaningful minutes. Those old teams were veteran laden teams. But that's not college ball anymore. I do like the way this team is build from the inside out. Put that together with a talented veteran like Carson Beck and you can really do some things.

It's a different era. Even that 2001 team, which doesn't seem that long ago, was running an offense that's antiquated by today's standards. One of our pass rushing specialist DEs was literally 200 lbs. Defense was painfully simple as well. Almost nothing but base 4-3 with 2 deep safeties.

We used to say, “we don’t rebuild, we just reload.”

We did that in a few positions this year, but the test will be if we do that again next year. We are losing some key members of the offensive line this year. Will we just reload next year? That will be a huge test.

This is exactly what a Miami football team is supposed to look like. Bought in, hardnosed, and flat out out working everybody and dominating in the trenches. Does that mean we’ll win it all this year, no one knows but we certainly can and that’s all you can ask for.
I'll add speed, speed and more speed! 😅

Not quite to be honest, but I also don’t think the levels reached in days of yore can ever be replicated. There’s not enough top end talent, as awesome as our dogs have been in the trenches.

But we certainly look like we’re at the top tier of teams at the moment. And this appears to be a mentally tough bunch.

Talent seems to more evenly distributed in cfb right now as well.

Enjoy the season. A lot of ball left. Hopefully keep the injuries to a minimum and make a run.

I started watching in 2002 as a ten year old. I saw that team live and - no - we aren't at 2002 levels of balance. That year was Dorsey's last (though I can see a Beck Dorsey comparison). We had a RB room filled with future All Pro and HOF guys, and Sean Taylor playing safety - not to mention Vince Wilfork / Vilma in the front seven.

The 2003-5 teams had killer defenses but QB play and philosophy was very bad (we stayed pro style when everyone started going spread - still could've maybe worked with better QB play). After 2006, the talent level on both sides of the ball dropped off a cliff. There were always a *few* NFL guys on either side of the ball though. QB play was below average from Dorsey UNTIL Ward. Kayaa was possible our most consistent QB of that era but he's nothing to brag about.

The 2017 team was closer to a balanced team but Rosier wasn't a serious QB (however in 12 team playoff era, that squad gets a berth).

This is the best overall roster (with the essential QB piece) *since* 2002.

******* RIGHT! This is how a Miami Football PROGRUM is supposed to look. Shout out to all of us who watched Mario create a machine in front of our eyes and didn't flinch.

Yes he made mistakes but the blueprint was clear as day.

It is getting to what it's supposed to look like what it looks like when it looks like it.

To start, the answer to your question at the end is yes. The longer answer is there is a lot more season to go, but if we continue to play like this, the answer will overwhelmingly be yes. Now that we've gotten that out of the way, I would like to personally thank you for writing an innocent thread topic that made me feel old asf. Also, seeing the November collapses and beatdowns by rivals comments made me sad. Now I feel like a depressed geriatric. Thank you.
