Is the Canes Defense Championship Caliber?

If Dee Delany and Dean can shore up the corner spots, Oh yea, and we got the depth in the front 7 to make us scary good!

That front 7 is. And what's championship caliber? Clemson got hung for 43 against Pitt this season. You need an offense that can score at will in this sport if you want to win. Unless your Bama.

I say yes. Defense doesn't win championships the way it used to. Elite offenses do. Bama usually has one of the best defenses every year but Clemson has shredded them 2 straight title games. Miami won't be competing for titles until Richt can get the offense fixed. The defense is plenty good enough.

Not Yet. Clemson starting front 4 had 27 sacks and 17 came from their 2 DTs. Bama front 4 had 31.5 sacks and 12.5 came from their Dts.

For comparison miami starting d-line had 11.5 sacks and only 4.5 came from the DTs.

The d-line has to make that leap this year and hopefully the cb spots will be solid.

A resounding yes.

It is clear that the Canes are superb to any other schools with the conferences that we play in.

Good point. The DL needs to dominate more in rushing the passer. The truly great defenses get pressure with the front 4 and have DTs who can create pressure right up the middle. When you have to start sending LBs or DBs to get pressure you leave yourself vulnerable.

Excited to see the DL in 2017 after a full season of playing in this scheme.

Just thinking about what Norton, Thomas, McIntosh were being asked to do under the previous staff makes me physically sick.

The bowl game seemed to be the culmination of what the defense wants to look like.

Agreed.

The great Miami defenses all had dominate DTs. Jerome Brown, Cortez Kennedy, Russell Maryland, Warren Sapp, and Vince Wilfork all lead the way. The Canes had some good DEs but it was the DTs that ended up in the HOF.

The next step for Miami is to recruit and develop those caliber of DTs.

Having an elite offense may put you over the top to win a championship game,

but having an elite defense will always give you the chance.

In other words can the Defense shut opposing teams down enough to get us to the ACC championship game and/or beyond. If the offense only have to score 17 ppg to win I think the defense is championship caliber.

If you can rack up 31.5 sacks with just your front 4.... well you can figure out the rest.

Clearly you dont know football. When you cant get pressure with your front 4 you put your defense at even more risk. You start blitzing and if you dont get home thats a big hole for the offense to exploit.

No. This defense isn't truly elite yet. Elite defenses can carry a team/ give you a chance to win pretty munch every game. This defense haven't shown that yet. Other's factors come into play but the defense hasn't shown anything to show it's championship caliber of yet.
