Any offense that is competent is a bad matchup for us because we have become punchless offense and now have injuries to our leading rusher and 2nd receiver.. So any offense that can put up a decent amount of points on board makes our team play nervous because they cant keep up.
Also didnt see mention of Hollywood Smothers? Not sure if he will be back off their bye week but he is a problem and his backup went off last week also.
Oh, I agree. We could very well lose this game. I've stated before that any average or above average team gives us problems. NC State fits that category. And, they will be motivated to plays us. They are coming off a bye week. This is usually a positive thing for teams not named Miami. I expect some new wrinkles and surprises from them. We very well may need to win the turnover battle to survive and pull out a victory, which means we will have been outcoached once again by the team with an extra week to prepare.Absolutely, even missing games he is still leading rusher in conference. Difference maker for sure.
BE CAREFUL.
This is our best defense in twenty years.CJ Bailey is legit but our defense has been playing excellent for the most part this season. Their defense is dog **** especially on the road. This game literally comes down to what our offense decides to look coming out the gate..if we start like last week expect a game similar to SMU a dogfight with an inferior team that we can lose in the end..if we start the game looking like the second half version ourself last week then the game won’t be close. But they are not a good football team.
I’ll have a roster breakdown later this week.I actually see it the other way. I think we match-up with teams that have better offenses than defenses. Especially in the run game. Louisville and SMU are both very good up front.
The only way we’re going to score enough points to win is against awful defenses. I trust our defense to limit them, even though that’s their better side. I don’t see a team like NC State scoring 30+ on us. But we all know we’re not scoring 30 on anyone good.
So, when the offense as average as it is, we’ll probably be in a close-ish game against anyone with a pulse. But I think they’re so ****** on that side, we can get to 30, and I don’t think they will.
Where I think we struggle is the teams who hold us to 20-ish, because only the worst of the worst in the country (Syracuse, Stanford, Florida etc) can’t score 20 in a game these days.
I could be wrong but give me the matchup against the high powered offense and ****** defense. I like our defense against anyone. And I only like our offense against high school teams.
I haven’t broken the game down much yet but just at first glance I think we can get this one like 31-23.
Solid head coach.
I was at that game. NC State had a lot of trouble moving the ball on ND. They really only had one decent drive. Even though it was only 10-7 at half, ND controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides and more or less moved the ball at will all day. They scored 36 and had 3 turnovers inside the NC State 10--a fumble at the 2, a pick in the end zone from the 8, and a turnover on downs on 4th-and-goal. As you said, NC State is not good defensively. If we look at common opponent ND smashed them and Bailey had 3 Int's.
Bailey is good though so we better get pressure on him.
Their D is garbage.
I dont look at it like they have to score 30+, they just have to be a competent offense to score mid 20s and that has been enough to give us an L. Our offense handicaps themselves by playing "methodical" for a half or whatever and running u middle no matter what defense does or knows.I actually see it the other way. I think we match-up with teams that have better offenses than defenses. Especially in the run game. Louisville and SMU are both very good up front.

SMU pass defense was terrible and we started out hot but handicapped ourselves and got gun shy and said lets run into 11 man fronts.
They're good enough to beat us if we play like the first half of the Syracuse game. Bailey is dangerous, they can run the ball and they have talent at the skill positions. They also have an NFL LT and have some ability to protect.
It will come down to our passing game. We couldn't take advantage of SMU's weakness. That needs to change against NC State's defensive backfield, which got raided in the Portal.
Obviously we have to win the game, but this is also a massive chance to make it difficult for the committee to justify ranking Notre Dame so far ahead of us. Ostensibly, the committee weighs results against common opponents (although supposedly not margin of victory but given their affinity for the eye test so far...) and Notre Dame pasted this team less than a month ago.
The offense seems to be legit:
- CJ Bailey is coming into his own and I would very much prefer him over LaNorris Sellers in the portal if we are picking between the two.
- Terrell Anderson is the big play guy and he is good. Noah Rogers is the possession guy and he is solid if unspectacular. Teddy Hoffman is the third receiver who is on the rise. A Florida kid that I sorta wish we had recruited.
- The guy who makes me the most nervous is the tight end, Justin Joly. He is one of the five best in the country (maybe behind only Fall Camp Elija Lofton) and a potential matchup nightmare for most of our DBs and certainly our linebackers in space. Maybe
We remain one of the best run-stopping defenses in the entire country and NC State's offensive line is nothing special, so we should be able to stop the run without too much stress, but I expect Bailey to light us up in the pass game. Think SMU where the run game was a complete non-factor but Jennings threw for a career-high.
I am nervous.
Their rush defense is okay, not that that matters since we can't even run the ball effectively against ******* Syracuse. But the pass defense is exceptionally terrible.
THEY ARE RANKED 135TH IN THE COUNTRY IN PASSING YARDS ALLOWED. THAT IS SECOND-WORST IN THE ENTIRE COUNTRY. The only team that is worse? SMU. Kill me now.
I really couldn't be more nervous for this game. Bailey will obviously be pumped up for this one. NC State is a carbon-copy statistically to SMU and while Dave Doeren isn't the offensive guru that Lashlee is, he is a good coach who will have his guys ready to play.
Can we PLEASE get out to a fast start? Maybe try some play-action? Get the tight ends involved? Okay let's not get crazy.
I agree I feel the same way this game doesn’t concern me as much. I think we roll them at home even with the unimaginative playcalling cause they absolutely suck but nothing surprises me under Mario. This is our best defense in twenty years.
We’re not only going to win, but win extremely convincingly. I’m more concerned about a letdown the following week.
