Stumbled upon this article randomly that's pretty good, which defines a "scrub" in the context of any competitive game. It's primarily about video games with references to chess and other things, but easily applies to a sport like football as well. This is CIS though and I know most of ya'll have the attention span of a gold fish so I pulled out some of the more relevant bits.

IMO, Mario is a scrub, and isn't actually playing to win. He's self imposed a false notion on himself about *how* to win, and is more concerned about winning in that particular way on offense than actually winning at any cost:

"A scrub is a player who is handicapped by self-imposed rules that the game knows nothing about. A scrub does not play to win."

"The scrub would take great issue with this statement for he usually believes that he is playing to win, but he is bound up by an intricate construct of fictitious rules that prevents him from ever truly competing. These made-up rules vary from game to game, of course, but their character remains constant"

"You will not see a classic scrub throw his opponent five times in a row (In street fighter). But why not? What if doing so is strategically the sequence of moves that optimizes his chances of winning? Here we’ve encountered our first clash: the scrub is only willing to play to win within his own made-up mental set of rules. These rules can be staggeringly arbitrary. If you beat a scrub by throwing projectile attacks at him, keeping your distance and preventing him from getting near you—that’s cheap. If you throw him repeatedly, that’s cheap, too. Yes, sir. Your analogy fits Mario seemingly perfectly.

He does not care to have the best team that wins the most games no matter what. He doesn't care to set aside his ego and make the goal to win. He has instead made it his mission to prove everyone that his way of doing it is the right way despite the results. "It's the players that are the issue, not me." He mumbles as he loses another game against Georgia Tech 12-9.

(p.s these thoughts are meant to further the train of thought of this thread and may or may not reflect the poRsters actual thoughts on the matter)
