Is it Dawson? Mario? Mirabal? Or Yes?

Spicy Dawson sounded like a man frustrated, not just with the line of media questioning, but he sounded like a man that is being held back from doing what he truly wants to do.

Ward > Beck > TVD. Yet the drop-off in explosive plays doesn’t match the talent gap between Ward and Beck.

So what does that tell us? Has the stunted creativity on offense being dictated from above? Was last year’s dynamic play-calling an anomaly? Has Dawson been handcuffed? Mario and Mirabal both meddling.

Mario has undeniably grown as a head coach year over year. But if he continues to restrict capable coordinators from opening things up, the program’s ceiling will remain around 10–2 or 9–3. The question is: are we OK with that?

Maybe Beck isn’t Cam upstairs (or athletically) and as a result the offense has taken a big step back. It is the mental side of the game to me that has magnified this drop off.

Heading into the season based on coaches reports on Beck (and maybe his complexion) the expectation was that he was going to command the offense at the same level as Cam mentally, potentially better. This was the narrative that fostered the whole efficiency stuff.

I would say Cam’s football IQ was vastly underrated or Becks was overrated. Cam would miss some check downs big play hunting but I feel like he was a lot better with his checks and limiting really bad plays. Maybe that was just his magician stuff and all the success he was able to do off platform and late in plays. Maybe Becks adherence to the system and his determination to get the ball out fast is making us more “predictable”

It is not meddling. This idea that Mario and Mirabal are affecting Dawson ability to call a successful offense is nonsense. Ro broke down the run calls against Stanford. Lance did the same. They both were frustrated in the first half with how the game was playing out but they both acknowledged that the run schemes and calls were fine and were actually operating successfully for what the scheme dictates, save a handful or plays where we flat out last at the POA.

If Beck was a future NFL starter he would probably be hanging 40 on everyone in this system but it is looking more and more like he is physically and mentally a career NFL backup. This means that he will miss more pre snap reads and throws than he should and those mistakes will limit the overall success of the offense. If we have drops, poorly executed blocking, or penalties at crucial points in drives then he isn’t going to consistently overcome those issues with shear talent. I don’t think anyone expected him to be that guy. His last year at UGA showed that he was not going to raise the talent level of his team. He was brought here to t benefit from the talent on the roster not necessarily to elevate it.
 
Dawson’s defense of system seemed quite sincere & unlike a coordinator being held captive.
 
Explosives require time. I feel like Beck doesn't give plays time to develop and give his guys time to get loose in the secondary.

How many deep over routes did Cam wait out last year? Or Restrepo breaking off the in-cut for the corner route? You can't tell me Mali cant run that route and it was bread and butter last year.

Beck has the ball out before those routes can develop.

was last years offense, lead by the #1 nfl pick who had a very special talent to make off script plays and escape pressure, an anomaly? No it wasn’t. Its totally normal and should be the floor every year. If we don’t have the 1st NFL pick in the draft every year, it’s a failure.

Playcalling is more predictable, but if you go back and watch the Louisville game (Which I did), on 3 of those interceptions Beck had other people wide open, especially the deep one to Toney, Toney basically had 4 people on him and Beck forced it, I think that was more of Beck's fault when I think about it. The predictable play calling is on Dawson and Mario though, everyone in stands knows what youre about to do, so I'm sure the other team does
 
Not another thread on Dawson and play calling… buddy the sky is blue.

Stevie wonder knows Mario is telling him what to do. Look at the Texas a&m game and what the formations look like now.
 
I think @k9cane playing the disgruntled Miami fan with coach jb being a patient coach and breaking it down can show why Dawson is frustrated.. we know Mario loves condensed sets and he ran them at UO alot, bought mccay to his coaching convention and all.. everyone blames Dawson because he is OC but he has a boss who wants things run a certain way..

And I think an important distinction to make is that having Beck hold on to the ball and wait it out might not be a very good idea because he tends to **** up when the clock gets short. Cam thrived in that scenario but that is not an area where Beck excels, at least up to this point he hasn’t.
 
Beck has 5 300+ games in 2023, 4 in 2024, and 1 in 2025. SMU defense lives off of turnovers and gives up a ton of passing yards. This is the perfect game for Beck to put up 300-400 yards. Follow that up with another vs Cuse and VT.

This--went back and watched some tape from last year recently, and the sole reason for 90-95% of our explosive plays was Cam's godly ability to extend plays indefinitely which gave receivers time to get WIDE open downfield. Carson's inability or unwillingness to do so, makes our plays last about 1/4 of the duration as last year. With such a short time window, there's only so much you can do...
