interesting take on the offensive line after week 1 of camp

I think McCoy is an upper-echelon run blocker and physical talent. He was average or worse as a pass blocker last year with some very bad moments.

The question is whether his move to RT will make his pass-blocking better (because he can better use his foot quickness and length), worse (because it is a higher-leverage position) or stay the same.

I don’t know the answer, but I do take some comfort in the fact that he is an old player with elite coaching.
i think this is a fair take.

My question is what happens with how he often lost reps. If you go through his bad moments, a healthy amount of them were losing to lateral quickness or moves/swims. They weren’t from necessarily getting bull rushed.

I’ll repeat I’m not an expert at knowing the nuances, but would that not show up MORE out in space?

And, yeah, I’m sure they’ve considered this and put it to the test with guys like Wilson and Lightfoot, etc.

I pray he puts it all together and becomes what the coaches have long been rumored to see in him as a prospect. If he is solid to above average in pass pro, it changes our capacity.
I am nowhere near an OL guru, but to my layman’s eyes he had some leverage and awareness issues. Guys went unblocked and he fell off some blocks. I think he is quick and can cover ground when there is more ground to work with. But that’s a pure projection and I’d be lying if I said I knew.

Be careful with the McCoy talk. It is frowned upon to discuss his performance in football games.
breakdown some film for us. Alot of picking and choosing one offs on this guy. I can do the same for Francis/Cooper/Bell but that wouldn't tell the full story.

Is McCoy a 1st rounder next year? No.

This is his chance to get drafted and he has the skillset to position himself for that this year. He's a solid player at minimum.

Lol.

If he can consistently show competence against Wilson and Lightfoot, that at least should be evidence he might survive our regular season schedule. In either case, he faces WF's guy (Hardy, especially) on September 18th. If they're smart, they'd match him up against Mccoy then and we'll find out a bunch there - thankfully, before Clemson.

Then, he gets Clemson's Will Heldt or however you spell his last name. Another good test of what is in question.

After that, it should be pure practice until he sees Traore against ND. The FSU good twin is on the bigger side and not sure if he's sliding in or being used as a 5T. Either way, he's way more linear than these other guys.

So, maybe these mini-tests are part of the calculation to let him prove himself there. Even if Mccoy has trouble against Wake, we should not be at serious risk there. Other than the fact I'm going to the game and haven't won a road game in 19 years, we should be a significant favorite.

Performance? Discuss.

You’re not living in reality if you think he isn’t starting. There is nothing to discuss. He is legit the most locked in starter on the entire OLine. For better or worse.

Gotcha, so you didn't read **** I posted. Thanks.

We have literal superhero archetypes all over the OL and we have Mario and Mirabal. They'll make it work. Mario and Mirabal could coach me up to block and I'm an aging frail endurance athlete. I might end up looking like Van Gundy vs Miami but I'll get it done

I’m not an OL guru but McCoy always just looked like a tackle to me. If Alex starts him at RT, with the behemoths we have trying to take his job, I expect him to play well. But I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t looking at the OL first, second, and third when examining the ceiling of this team.

I’ve said it a million times here so excuse the repetitiveness, but when you have truly kick *** lines on both sides, it’s almost impossible to be anything less than a very good football team. The reason I was so bullish on last year’s team is I knew, for a fact, we had one of the very best OLs and DLs in America. I knew it without a doubt. I can’t say that right now about this OL. I expect it to be good. But I don’t know that it is. I’m hoping that, even if it’s just pretty good, the ridiculous skill talent we have will still push us to a Top 10 offense. If the 2026 OL even approaches 2025, we very well might have the best offense in the country.

The only OL spot I have any concern over is Center.

Other than that, we have a bunch of a big gigantic athletic Guards & Tackles, Upperclassmen Vets & young True, Red Frosh-Soph. The other 4 spots will get figured out.

Center is the one where the margin of error is the slimmest & has arguably the 2nd highest impact on line play overall.

There's a reason they've brought in Matt Lee, Zach Carpenter & James Brockermeyer 3 seasons in a row to start at Center, all while Rodriguez was here.

Rodriguez is the elder statesmen of the line, he's gotta show something this season. I don’t mean just be serviceable for a feel good story for the board, I mean his play has to elevate to a level that compliments the Championship aspirations that we have.

Basically been saying the same all year, and the thing that makes me feel best about it is they obviously know this, and they didn’t pursue a portal center. They’re obviously not shy about doing it, Mario had literally done it every year, as you said.

Them not doing it and giving the keys to RR is what gives me optimism. But you’re right, he’s easily one of the Top 5 most important players on the whole roster. If he’s as good as the last 3 we had, we should be fine.

They did bring in Johnathan Cline from ETU back in the Spring.

But it appears he's more insurance policy than competition for starter snaps.

It'll be interesting to see if he makes the 2-deep vs Stanford.

I completely forgot he existed. I don't think he's ever played Center anywhere before though, right? I could be wrong. Honestly, I remember thinking when we brought him in that if we're bringing a kid from ETSU who didn't even start, I'm probably going to forget about him before he even arrives. And, yep. Sure did. But yeah, I'm sure he was just interior insurance. The previous 3 kids we brought it were previous year starters, at Center, at a P4 program. The fact we didn't even come close to doing that again told me they're riding with RR till the wheels fall off. We need him, desperately.

Now that media viewing is over I am still shocked that Meriweather has not been mentioned once. I understand that means he’s a non factor I just will continue to say I am shocked to hear it. I mean D money has been talking about the 6’9 JUCO kid every stream but not one peep about Meriweather from him or any other media personnel.

UGA’s line and Stacy Searles really were dog ****

He’s doing ok. Solid second-team tackle with a chance to move up.
