interesting take on the offensive line after week 1 of camp

It will all sort itself out as the season progresses. Relax. No need for strays.
 
@DMoney if we line up in six-lineman sets, who do you think has the best movement skills to be in that pseudo McCormick role?

All I can say is what you just showed there is not a random play. He's been occasionally reachy and off balance in pass pro throughout the last couple years. Sure, "everyone is sometimes." But, it has stood out. Compare to Samson last year in similar plays in pass pro, and you'll see a gigantic difference in how he sets, his balance and recovery. Again, I'm extremely far from any technical expertise for OL. Never played it and other than knowing some basic rules of what they look for and watching them as keys, I couldn't tell you the little nuances of their games. I feel like if you can't teach someone something, you don't know well it enough to make solid conclusions beyond plain observations, and that's where I stand with OL.

So, plainly, until we see it, I wonder about his transition to RT.

Probably better as a direct question for the handful of dudes I generally look to for OL opinions: @San Amaro Dr, @gogeta4, @hollyhood27, @Lance Roffers.

What do you all expect from Mccoy's transition to RT? On DUO and many running plays, he should be fine. Out on an island on pass situations, what should we look for to note if the transition from LG to RT is in trouble?

Mannn, Im the same way, last night I randomly pulled up full game cut of the '24 syracuse game because I wanted to see something I remembered and I was reminded quickly how much more tempo we ran with Ward and crew.. Someone made comment about getting 21 point lead and then changing game plan to run to protect young oline instead of just keep doing what got 21 point lead..

And the pff we know in cfb is hit or miss but just use as a data point more than anything based on what we see first.. I dont get to see practice so only can go off games.. In that play he didnt barely move his feet while everyone else is in their set, then he just get beat and on his knees, of course can be a bad rep but he has these types of reps inside and it become a type of leakage that stands out, if with all help inside still stands out, what will he look like on island if we have to play colin simmons or such.. Maybe he takes crazy leap idk..

Its hilarious but true lol, crazy how Samson can legit have knee injury and surgery and everyone talks about transfer and too much money invested, mind you legit INJURED! But this guy is teflon even if we talking about struggling play on field.. Some players just get that for some reason, idk..

Your eyes didn't tell you anything. You just look at the PFF number and have a preconceived notion about him because he has been an out-of-position rotational lineman his last two years. The staff knows he's an NFL tackle, which is why they've been gassing him up to scouts

Also, weren't you the same guy who trashed me for saying Kinsler and Plazz would start on how most ACC teams. How did that turn out? Where are those guys starting this year (assuming no injuries)

This couldn't be working out much better with Okunlola and McCoy as your experienced senior tackles, and Rodriguez as the next 6th year center not recruited by Mario: Lee 2023, Carpenter 2024, Brockermeyer 2025, Rodriguez 2026. Four man battle for the two guard spots between giants Congdon and Cantwell, and the smaller but more experienced Alofaituli and Buchanan. This must be the most fun Mirabal/Mario are having since arriving at Miami.
 
I think McCoy is an upper-echelon run blocker and physical talent. He was average or worse as a pass blocker last year with some very bad moments.

The question is whether his move to RT will make his pass-blocking better (because he can better use his foot quickness and length), worse (because it is a higher-leverage position) or stay the same.

I don’t know the answer, but I do take some comfort in the fact that he is an old player with elite coaching.

Not looking to argue just clarification on upper echelon? Does this mean one of the best or better than average?

IMO he is really good run blocking and as a physical talent. Day 2 type. The pass blocking is a question and a fair one. He wasn’t as good as he needed to be at guard last year and is now playing a more challenging position.

I think he has certain traits (foot quickness, length) that will help him at tackle but it’s a legit question mark.

Just because you say it’s a question mark doesn’t mean people should take that as any sort of concern. Based on the times I’ve seen him at guard, I'm more than confident he can hold up and punish the ACC teams we face this year. The question is whether he can put himself in a position to be an All-ACC tackle and a Day 2 pick.

i think this is a fair take.

My question is what happens with how he often lost reps. If you go through his bad moments, a healthy amount of them were losing to lateral quickness or moves/swims. They weren’t from necessarily getting bull rushed.

I’ll repeat I’m not an expert at knowing the nuances of OL position play, but would that not show up MORE out in space?

And, yeah, I’m sure they’ve considered this and put it to the test with guys like Wilson and Lightfoot, etc.

I pray he puts it all together and becomes what the coaches have long been rumored to see in him as a prospect. If he is solid to above average in pass pro, it changes our capacity.
