Really?
Rushing for over 300 not a shocker huh. Everyone saw it a mile away right.
The shlt people say on here, man. I realize this wasn’t Clemson we played, but an actual G5, CUSA team with a top defense for that league.

Yes, we were supposed to beat the spread. We did. Even if just barely, and NO, nobody saw us running for well over 300 yds and averaging between 6 and 7 ypc.

I mean fūck, when is the last time we had rushing numbers like that? Even against an FCS team.

FAMU in Richt's first season. I have no idea when Miami last ran for 300 yards against an actual FBS program.

Edit: It was against Duke in 2018 so not too long ago. However that game they lost and only scored 12 points so the 300 yards was meaningless.

I think the basis of the skepticism, at least on my end, is that the success rate was still rather poor on running plays. I think we had about half of our yardage on 5 plays (1 being a run at the end of the half when the line couldn’t hold a block long enough for our QB to get off a Hail Mary), and the other 47 runs netted like 145 yards.

Now, you can’t just ignore the splash plays. It’s probably how we’re going to butter our bread all year. But 300+ rushing yards is a touch misleading when you realize that the vast majority of the runs were technically unsuccessful.

Against UAB, you can get away with going 3, -2, 17 on the ground on consecutive plays. But that’s not gonna fly against good teams with equal athletes. Good thing is, Lashlee is smart as **** and he understands that his backs are significantly more athletic than UAB’s defenders. Keep giving them the rock and they’ll make someone miss. And it worked. I just don’t think you’ll see 52 runs in a game for the rest of the season, and I also think the majority of what we got was a byproduct of King and the backs’ talent. There wasn’t much push at all and there weren’t many gaping holes.

We’ll be OK, though. It was Game 1 in a weird *** year. Got an extra 2 days to prepare for Louisville. We should be able to do close to the same against them as we did against UAB. But once we get to the better teams with equal athletes on defense, our WRs and TEs are going to have to win in the passing game and we’re going to have to be better up front.

Once again, we're getting way too ahead of ourselves

2020
vs UAB - 337 yds - 6.5 ypc

2018
vs Pitt - 298 yds - 9.2 ypc
vs Duke - 300 yds - 6.8 ypc
vs Toledo - 268 - 5.1 ypc
vs FIU - 248 yds - 5.1 ypc
vs UNC - 229 yds - 6.8 ypc

This is not to negate what we did on the ground last night. I'm a huge fan of the RB's & King and they were great on the ground last night.

But if you're thinking this is something that hasn't happened in 15 years - it happened similarly & consistently just 2 years ago (on a 7-6 team).

Last nights rushing totals are just reflective of having a running QB.

Per the Herald, yesterday’s rushing total (337) was the second-highest total since 2004.

In that span, we’ve had ten NFL backs. Last year, with one of those backs, we finished 112th in yards and 117th in attempts.

Excited to see what this running game does over the course of the year. It should remain explosive if uneven. I expect some stuffs and a lot of huge plays.
Glad you're stepping up as a voice of reason. People have lost their minds on here with the negativity.

You can’t discount the fact that King had rust as far as his passing game - he missed at a very minimum two or possibly even three wide-open long downfield throws that he might ordinarily make. That changes the total complexion of the game

I’ve been critical for some stupid sht but rushing for 3 benjis ain’t one of them.
This game at the end of the season is gonna be used as validation for the mopes or the sunshine pumpers. But it shouldn’t be used as validation for anything given the circumstances.
But given the circumstances I feel the positives outweighed the negatives by a lot.

Everyone cried about the run game last year. We run 52 times for 330 yards, and they want to cry about the passing game now. Last time we saw this team, we were getting anally raped by a CUSA team and never posed a threat to score a point the whole game.

King never was and never will be a drop back dime tosser. He's never going to be Drew Brees or Russell Wilson in the throw game. But he can be an insane weapon in the run game and throwing enough to keep defenses honest. He was off yesterday, but he hasn't played in a long time and is getting used to another new system.

King brings calm. Leadership. And an incredible extra weapon in the run game. He can be an opportune passer who hits some occasional big throws or extends some drives. That run game you saw last night isn't that run game with any other QB because the defense doesn't have to account for other QBs the way they do King.

First game should be the worst game. If we can build each week that should be the goal. Even the great teams usually don't play super clean week one. Add in no spring and probably some limited work in the summer, and you can be a little sloppy offensively.

We collectively *****ed for years about scheme not matching personnel.

Now that we have a dynamic dual threat QB, and 3RBs and 2TEs that may be the most dangerous weapons we have, I hope people won't complain about how we scheme around them.

I actually like the offense a lot. King connects on a couple deep throws, we're talking a completely different narrative.

If we win every game 31-14, I don't care if we never throw a forward pass.
If we start losing games 31-14 because we can't pass, I'm betting you'd be wondering why we can't complete forward passes. ;)

This isn't going to work against other teams.

I mean I would classify myself as being somewhat underwhelmed, but yet not disappointed at the game. Easy to find the negatives. Ivey still not figuring out that he can turn his head and make a play on a ball, shlt like that.

But it’s a first game, after one of the weirdest off-seasons ever, with basically no spring practice, and a compressed, unusual, and disruptive schedule to get ready for this game.

I just don’t think we know anything about this team until three or four games into the season.

Who knows, we could be good, could be bad, but I’m not going make this game worth more, from a predictive standpoint, than it deserves.

Except that 300 yards against Duke came in a loss. and only netted 12 points. Somehow they only mustered 24 against Pitt despite averaging almost 10 yards per carry.

As people have noted, UAB isn't a bad defense. It's also worth remembering that this was their second game. They shook off their rust last week.

A solid first out effort for us.
