In 2006....

Absolutely think that was the reason during that time it was the thing to do only good thing is it set notre dam back a few years to when they hired ty... But like i previously stated he was cheap also ... And boy did he dig us into a deep hole that is still being worked on

I always laugh at simple minded comments like " Shannon set us back years". " he was hired because he was black....." Reflects more on the person making those comments than anything. A good/ great coach can come in and get results immediatly no matter what the previous coach did.

Shannon left a good enough foundation for a real coach to come in and win right away. Unfortunately golden doesn't fit Into this category. In fact, if you look at the production Golden may be worse than Shannon which says something.

Golden is a terrible coach on his own, no need to prop up Shannon to make Golden look bad. Shannon did not leave a good foundation, the program was in shambles in many areas by the time he was fired. Bottomline is that Shannon and Golden were/are disasters as the head coach of Miami.

Your point is correct however that a good coach can come to Miami and get good results, or at least show major progress, after a year or two.

Shannon left one of the most talented and experinced teams in the acc for golden. If that's not a good foundation I don't know what is. Some of you act as if Shannon was suppose to leave this guy a championship team stacked for years to come. That type of thinking comes from a simple football mind.

Great defensive backfield he left.

Great depth, especially considering players missed games because of recruiting violations committed on his watch. I personally like Shannon, but dude he was in way over his head.

Just cause you like him doesn't make him a good coach, sheet even uncle clappy got a head coaching job. He was awful. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Anyone completely discounting race as a factor in Shannon's hiring is 1) forgetting what the CFB coaching environment was like in 2006, and 2) giving Donna too much credit. Remember, it was considered significant when Mississippi State hired Sylvester Croom in 2004. I have no doubt that Shalala, a calculated politician obsessed with "cleaning up Miami's image", was excited about the positive press that would accompany the decision by a prominent program like Miami to hire an African American head coach in 2006.
