Improvement from the secondary

Addae may be the biggest factor. Looking at the improvements that he led his last 3 teams to.

Minnesota went from 51st (212.4 ypg) to 9th (184.2 ypg)
West Virginia went from 107th (258.7 ypg) to 1st (159.6 ypg)
Georgia went from 88th (248.7 ypg) to 12th (189.7)

His secondaries played very disciplined and intelligent which has been missing.

We have talent and the combination of Steele’s defensive scheme and Addae should be huge this season.

Stevenson has already been named preseason first team ACC by several publications and he has the highest nfl grade on the defense. “Has the ability to be all conference” is like saying Alabama has the ability to be a top ten team. He was the 37th rated player in his class and a HIGH 4 star. He has the ability to be a first rounder, All American and Thorpe winner. Fwiw

Stoops was good no doubt...but he benefited GREATLY from the DBs and their coaching handed to him by Butch/Pagano.....

That’s true - but I believe the defence last year didn’t do him any favors. I think the Schemin coaching this season will allow him to show out.
 
Question:

Can we play press if we're going up against spread offenses. Are there teams that don't us zone against it?

I know that teams have employed Press man on the #1 receivers and then match zone against the rest. It’s going to be interesting to see how we game plan our D this year. Steele has such a huge tool box to use. One thing that I know he did at Auburn was simplify it somewhat for the defence to run, but still complex for other teams to decipher….if that makes sense.

No question at all. I said Addae is our best since Mark Stoops. I didn't say that Stoops was our best DB coach ever. That would be the great Chuck Paganol

So the boundary corners stay man and bump at the line and the inside corners play more a zone with the safeties?

Honestly, been following Addae for a little bit now. He has started to build a great track record, wouldnt be surprised to see him go after a better position in the next couple of seasons.

T-Rob definitely elevated our DB recruiting in year 1. No doubt about that. But I think it was pretty clear he was a bad fit with Manny (obviously). Lots of smoke midseason he was looking to get out. Wanted to play more aggressive and Manny employs that 10 yard cushion and bailing out.

That said, I am excited about the potential big difference Addae could make here.

Yes - they can bracket the slot with nickel and safety. If there is a drag route sometimes the LB runs with it because the CB is locked up. You basically would have 5 players matching coverage against the other 3 offensive players that are eligible.

You can press whenever you want, gotta match the offenses personnel tho u don’t want your linebackers getting exploited if you’re in straight press man.

Some teams use zone, match zones is what you’re gonna see with steele. Pattern matching so you can cover the holes of the zone you’re playing, like with cover 3 the seams are usually the weak point so teams will try to create conflict there so coaches will have the nickel carry that seam up the field so the throwing window is smaller with the safety on top. So basically zone eventually turns to man is what I’ve heard alot of coaches say

So in this case we could use the package of Williams,Tae, and Kinchens at the same time right? Man that would be sick!

Virginia tech and TCU basically ran this with 4-2 base and 2 safeties in the slot and 1 high. It’s almost like a 4-4 vs the run. You could do it on earlier downs and change out one for more of a corner.

This is true, but it’s hard for me to knock any asst defensive coach that was under Manny. He was coaching with 2 hands behind his back with the passive style he was forced to teach on the back end, JMO. But, I do expect vast improvement with this group. Like it has been mentioned, we have legit depth there along with some absolute dudes on the back end and history shows Addae can get it done. Numbers don’t lie.

Agreed. We have some depth there and some guys that have played a lot of snaps. We should see significant improvement and development from the 3 freshman safeties now as soph. And between Ivey, Clarke, Dunson, Blades, Stevenson and Couch, those are all upper-classmen now. I think our D will be vastly improved, particularly with the added depth on the DL which should make life for the DBs easier.
